The Medallion -
Chapter 1574 Surprise
After a journey that took an entire day and night, Rocky and Commander Ling finally arrived at the military camp at the front line of the western region.
A camp of considerable size entered their eyes. From north to south, military tents of all sizes were stationed everywhere as far as the eye could see.
"Spiritual King Basil, do you want to take a break first?" Commander Ling asked as soon as he noticed that they had arrived.
"No, there's no need for that. Commander Ling, please tell me the current situation in detail, then take me to see the spiritual beast you've caught," Rocky quickly instructed.
After a quick nod of understanding, Commander Ling immediately explained to Rocky the recent happenings in the front line of the western region.
Since the camp of the western region army was located next to a large river, the Mochy River, it helped serve as a natural barrier against the invasion of the spiritual race's army. Hence, the camp of the spiritual race's army could be found on the opposite side of the river.
Moreover, the Mochy River used to be very wide and had raging waters. It was a near impossible task to cross it safely, even with the use of a ferry. Therefore, the western region army took advantage of this to prevent the spiritual race's army from reaching the Ethereal Region.
However, although the Mochy River served as a barrier, the water level of the river would eventually decline until the river end up completely waterless once the dry season rolled in. This was because of a dam built upstream.
Since they were currently approaching the dry season, the water level of the Mochy River continued to constantly fall and could no longer drown even a single person.
That was how the spiritual race managed to send more than a dozen spiritual beasts to cross the Mochy River a few days ago, catching the front line of the western region army by surprise. The western region army almost suffered a devastating loss.
It was fortunate that the army of the spiritual race couldn't cross the Mochy River by force yet, so once the spiritual beasts were driven away, the front line of the western region could take a short rest to lick their wounds.
After seeing the powerful spiritual beasts, Commander Ling realized that if they were unable to deal with the spiritual beasts, they would be complete helpless and unable to defend the western region once the spiritual beasts and the army of the spiritual race attacked at the same time. Therefore, he quickly sent word to the Tiger Whisker Pass for help.
"Simply put, once the water level of the Mochy River completely falls, the army of the spiritual race will be able to cross it." At those words, Rocky turned his eyes to look at the Mochy River, spotting it easily since it was barely a hundred meters away from the military camp.
"Yes, the dry season is fast approaching. I'm certain that the reason the army of the spiritual race sent spiritual beasts to attack our base at this time, was because they wanted to test our military strength," Commander Ling said grimly.
"Why didn't you build defensive facilities along the river, Commander Ling?" Rocky asked after giving it a moment's thought.
"The ground within a hundred meters of the Mochy River is very soft and can't bear too much weight. It's impossible for us to build any defensive facilities on the riverbanks," Commander Ling explained patiently.
"If we want to defend the front line of the western region, we have to rely on time and the land. If we have neither time nor land to rely on, the front line of the western region doesn't have any advantage against the spiritual race," Rocky pointed out.
"That's true. Spiritual King Basil, you're more proficient in the art of war than I expected," Commander Ling commented, looking at Rocky in surprise. With just a few comments, he could tell that the other man had great insights regarding the art of war.
"I wouldn't dare to say I'm proficient in it. I just have a few opinions I can offer," Rocky replied, waving his hand in the air as if to bat away the compliment.
"What you just said is the truth. In fact, if the spiritual race launched an attack themselves, the troops at the front line of our western region would be able to resist them. But I didn't expect that they would use spiritual beasts to attack us. This has never happened in the front line of the western region before. One reason is that the Mochy River is not something that ordinary spiritual beasts can cross; another is that most spiritual beasts are afraid of water, and they aren't suited to fight next to a river," Commander Ling remarked, the expression on his face darkening even more.
"So you're saying that the spiritual beasts sent by the spiritual race are obviously able to cross the Mochy River. They show no fear of water and they can even fight in it. Most importantly, their movements are well coordinated," Rocky summarized, his face turning stony.
"Yes, that part bothers me the most. Even if they sent spiritual beasts to cross the river and attacked us, spiritual beasts normally don't have their own consciousness. Only tamed spiritual beasts will follow commands. And yet, the spiritual beasts sent by the spiritual race this time could fight on their own without any orders. They cooperated with each other with a tacit understanding. It's clearly unusual." Commander Ling frowned.
"Maybe I'll figure out the answer once I take a look at the spiritual beast you caught," Rocky offered. Curiosity was rushing through his veins, if what Commander Ling said was true, the one who could control the spiritual beasts might have practiced a Beast Taming Skill similar to the Mysterious Beast Transformation Skill. That would allow them to give orders to the spiritual beasts through their spiritual sense. In other words, his opponent might be a skilled beast tamer.
"Come with me, Spiritual King Basil." Commander Ling immediately gestured for Rocky to follow him.
Without wasting a single moment, Rocky followed Commander Ling to the depths of the camp. Not long after, the two of them arrived at a beast farm. However, not many spiritual beasts lived within it. The most eye-catching was definitely the beast tied by several long and thick chains. Various swells covered its body, giving it an appearance similar to a toad. There was no doubt that it was a strong spiritual beast.
"Is it that one?" Rocky asked just to be certain, pointing towards the spiritual toad beast.
"Yes, it's that one," Commander Ling confirmed with a quick nod of his head.
"I'll go and have a look," Rocky decided.
"Please be very careful, Spiritual King Basil. Its saliva is incredibly corrosive. Once it touches your body, it'll be terrible," Commander Ling reminded Rocky, his voice filled with concern.
Of course, Rocky didn't pay the warning any mind. He fearlessly walked towards the beast.
Once the beast caught sight of Rocky approaching, it got even angrier. Its huge green eyes honed in on Rocky. After a moment, its throat wriggled and a mouthful of green saliva immediately burst out of its throat.
Without even blinking, Rocky dodged the saliva in one quick move. When the saliva fell on the ground, it immediately corroded the soil and left a hole.
Intense worry for Rocky could be seen on Commander Ling's face.
"If you spit again, I swear I'll dissect you for an experiment right this second," Rocky snarled at the beast with the help of the Mysterious Beast Transformation Skill, his eyes blazing fiercely. When the beast heard Rocky's words and noticed Rocky's calm yet powerful momentum, it instantly became daunted and immediately retreated like a scared rabbit.
At that point, Rocky had already reached the beast and then spoke gently, "Don't be afraid. I won't hurt you. I just want to know who your master is." While he was speaking, his finger pointed between the eyebrows of the beast to get into the beast's mind.
It only took a moment for a delicate figure to appear in Rocky's mind. Since she was in a green forest and was wearing a pink dress, she seemed like a flower fairy. Although he couldn't see her face clearly, he could tell that she was a beauty.
However, as soon as Rocky entered the beast's spiritual sense, he was immediately forced out. There was undoubtedly some sort of defense on the beast to protect its spiritual sense.
"It seems like its owner is nearby," Rocky said to himself with a nod of his head. Without missing a beat, he turned around and said to Commander Ling, "Commander Ling, I'm leaving for a bit."
The moment the words left Rocky's lips, he disappeared from where he stood and was nowhere to be seen.
Commander Ling was still in a daze from seeing the beast be so tame in front of Rocky. He became even more stunned when Rocky disappeared from sight.
