Chapter 9

Edith stepped forward, hesitated for a moment, and then spoke up. “Go and blow-dry your hair so you won’t catch a cold.”

She looked down, neither glancing around nor directly at Gideon.

Naturally, she didn’t notice the slightly astonished look in Gideon’s expression.

The next second, a surprised voice came from the sofa not far from Gideon. “Edie? Is that you?”

She thought to herself, ‘Is there someone else in the house?’

Startled, Edith looked in the direction of the voice.

The person sitting there had been obscured by Gideon earlier, and she hadn’t seen that person at all.

At that moment, she instinctively called out. “Teresa?”

Teresa Peterson, dressed in a long dress with her hair up, looked like a classic beauty. Despite her age, she still carried a unique charm.

Teresa looked at Edith with great surprise. “Edie, you’re finally back!”

Edith stood there, somewhat unsure of what to do next.

She thought, ‘Gideon’s mother treats me like her own daughter, but I left without saying goodbye.

‘I’m already divorced from Gideon, aren’t I?’

Edith bit the corner of her mouth and softly spoke, changing the way she called Teresa. “Yes, Mrs. Peterson, I’m back.”

As soon as Edith finished speaking, Teresa and Gideon were taken aback in the room.

Gideon looked up slightly, his handsome expression revealing a bone-chilling coldness. tinged with a hint of mockery.

Meanwhile, Teresa’s eyes widened. “Why are you calling me Mrs. Peterson? You and Gideon aren’t even divorced!”

Edith was stunned.

She thought, ‘We’re not divorced?

‘But I clearly signed the divorce agreement.

‘So, Gideon didn’t sign the divorce agreement?

‘But why?’

Edith looked towards Gideon with confusion, meeting his icy gaze devoid of emotion as if he were looking at an object.

She thought, ‘He clearly doesn’t love me, but why didn’t he sign it?’

That day Edith went home, she was still confused. When leaving, Teresa asked her to vic

again, and she agreed. Edith was unsure if she was just out of mind or for other reasons to

Since Edith couldn’t pick up the kids today, she asked Bonnie to bring them home,

When she got home, Bonnie had already prepared dinner and was setting the table for the two kids, murmuring to herself, “Your mom’s not coming back today, so I’ll take care of you, okay?”

With her back to the door, Bonnie didn’t see Edith had returned,

With rosy lips, biting a fork, Jeanne stared past Bonnie, her expression beaming, excitedly shouting, “Mommy!”

Bonnie was overjoyed. “So you’re willing to call me Mommy now?

But as she followed Jeanne’s gaze, she saw Edith had come in and changed her shoes.

She thought, ‘Well, I got excited for nothing!

Edith approached them, gently touching Ruben and Jeanne’s heads. “Were you good at kindergarten today?”

Jeanne nodded. “Mommy, the teacher said there’s a parent-child sports day tomorrow. Can you come?”

“Of course I can.” Edith hadn’t expected the kindergarten to start such an activity so soon after school started and then turned to Ruben. “Ruben, do you want to go?”

Ruben bit into a meatball and shook his head.

Bonnie said, “I’ve asked him. Ruben doesn’t want to go, probably because he’s shy around crowds. It’s okay. I’ll take care of Ruben at home tomorrow, and you can take Jeanne to the sports day.”

“Okay.”

Bonnie and Jeanne exchanged a glance and simultaneously grinned.

Ruben remained silent.

Although he didn’t know what was happening, he found these two suspicious.

Edith dressed casually in sportswear for the sports day, not wearing makeup. She looked fresh and beautiful.

Jeanne, holding her hand, complimented her all the way. “Mommy, you’re so pretty!”

Holding her hand, Edith entered the kindergarten, where parents and children gathered on the playground.

But Edith felt uncomfortably stared at as if someone’s gaze was constantly on her.

Clinging to her leg, Jeanne excitedly said, “Mommy, the first event is a relay race.”

“Alright, I’ll try my best, so you can win a cute sticker!”

The winner of each event would receive a cute sticker.

Suddenly, a haughty little girl’s voice came from nearby. “Jeanne, where’s your dad? Didn’t you say you have a dad?”

Jeanne’s grip tightened. The girl who had approached her, Joyce, was the same one she had

fought with before.

At that moment, Joyce was holding a man’s hand, proudly swaying it, flaunting “See? This is my dad!”

Jeanne struggled to look up and saw a face she had seen on Ruben’s computer.

Her expression froze for a moment,

“No…”

She thought, ‘He’s supposed to be my dad!’

Jeanne remembered Ruben’s advice and held back the words she was about to say.

But even as she held back her words, she felt wronged, her eyes red, filled with unshed

tears.

She thought, ‘Why does my dad have to be someone else’s dad?’
