Chapter 77 The Next Time Might Be Her Last
had
The rescue operation was a lengthy one this time. Peyton was the first to be wheeled out and transferred to the general ward. Two hours later, Freya was moved to the intensive care unit and put on a ventilator. She lay motionless on the hospital bed, her face pale and lifeless. Nathaniel cast a glance at her, his heart sinking at the sight of her attached to the ventilator. Ozzy, exhausted from the emergency procedures, relocated them to Strix Hospital. “How is she?” Nathaniel asked, gripping Ozzy’s arm tightly. “It’s not looking good. Her previous injuries haven’t fully healed, and now she’s developed a lung infection. I’m not certain she’ll survive the night,” Ozzy replied, a cold sweat trickling down his forehead.
Ozzy was on the verge of revealing the secret about the child, but his anger at seeing Freya’s injuries held him back. Who would dare harm Freya without Mr. Morgan’s consent? “She’s had severe stomach problems, arthritis, and other health issues in the past. And wasn’t she in a car accident before? I don’t know how much more she can take. Ms. Gomez’s situation is truly heartbreaking,” Ozzy said, his voice trembling slightly. He wasn’t worried about losing his job, though. If anything else happens to her,” he sighed, “no one will be able to save her.” Nathaniel stood there, his face ashen. “Mr. Morgan, perhaps you should change your clothes first. You can’t take care of others if you’re unwell,” Ozzy suggested. Nathaniel’s gaze hardened. When did I say I was going to take care of her? he thought to himself.
He turned and headed to Ozzy’s office. In the changing room, he swapped his wet clothes for the clean. ones Koen had brought him. Koen had also bought him a new cell phone and asked Xavier to restore the data. With the new phone in hand, Nathaniel made his way to the entrance of Freya’s intensive care unit. It was already late, and visiting hours were over. Only one visitor at a time was allowed in the ICU, and they had to wear special antibacterial clothing. Nathaniel pushed aside the lunchbox Koen had given him; he had no appetite. He changed into the antibacterial clothing and entered the ICU. The constant beeping of the heart monitor and the hum of the ventilator filled the room, creating an atmosphere of tension and anxiety.
Nathaniel reached out and touched Freya’s pale face, then traced the scar that marred her features. They had led separate lives for the past three years, and he found himself wondering what she had endured during that time. Even Ozzy, usually so cold and detached, had spoken up for her. Is this really my fault? Nathaniel realized he needed to dig deeper, to replace out what had happened to Freya while she was in prison. His fingers brushed against Freya’s neck and lifted the corner of her quilt. The burns on her chest had blistered and become infected. He stared at her, taking in the sight of her body covered in tubes, unconscious from the anesthesia, her top practically non–existent.
