The Reckoning of Love ( Sophia Yancey ) -
The Reckoning of Love Chapter 28
Chapter 28 Engaged
“Who is Soph?” Louise asked.
“Oh, she’s nobody. She’s just confused,” Vivian answered swiftly. “Mom, your granddaughter-in-law is here.”
Old Mrs. Lynch turned to look at Louise.
A few moments later, she abruptly let out a wail. “Where is Soph? Joseph, where is Soph? This is not Soph. I want Soph!”
Her words made Joseph’s heart throb in pain.
Old Mrs. Lynch was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s three years ago.
Once, Joseph had asked Sophia to spend a few days at the care home with her as he was busy with work.
He did not know what Sophia did to enthrall Old Mrs. Lynch to make the latter like her so much.
For the past two years, Old Mrs. Lynch would sometimes be so obstinate that no one could calm her down…
As a result, Joseph would have to ask Sophia for help.
“Soph is working, Grandma,” he said, walking over to Old Mrs. Lynch to hold her hand. “I’ll ask her to spend some time with you once she’s done with work, okay?”
“Call her now! Video call!” she demanded, shaking her head.
It seemed as though the idea that Sophia would not be her granddaughter-in-law had greatly aggravated her.
He had no choice.
He pulled his phone out. It was then that he noticed the unread message from Sophia.
His heart skipped as he hurriedly tapped into the message.
His face immediately darkened.
Moving out?
He immediately called her.
As expected, she hung up on him.
She then messaged him, ‘?’
‘Grandma’s acting up. She insists on seeing you, he replied.
As soon as the message was sent…
Sophia called him.
He snorted.
After he accepted the video call, Sophia’s face appeared on the screen with her hair sprawled around her face and somewhat flushed cheeks.
Behind her, it did not look anything like the apartment she was supposed to be living in.
“Soph
Old Mrs. Lynch snatched the phone away from him
“Grandma!” Sophia sweetly called out
“Soph, why don’t you ever visit me? I’ve missed you!” Old Mrs. Lynch sounded like a pleading little girl.
“I miss you very, very much as well,” Sophia softly reassured. “I have been very busy with work. I don’t even have the time to eat. I’ll visit you once I’m done with work, okay?”
“Okay!”
“Will you behave then, Grandma?”
“Yes!”
“You’re the best!”
Sophia’s adorable and sweet voice echoed in Joseph’s ears.
His mood, which had been gloomy the entire day, finally improved slightly.
“Soph still has to work, Grandma. Let’s not disturb her, he said, moving to grab the phone.
“Bye-bye, Soph! Remember to visit me!” Old Mrs. Lynch called out.
“Bye-bye, Grandma! I’ll be there soon!” Sophia replied.
Joseph then had his phone back in his hands once more.
He did not even have a chance to glance at Sophia as she hung up straight away.
He was rendered speechless.
“Mary, please take her back to her room.”
Mary hurriedly stepped forward to wheel Old Mrs. Lynch away, knowing that the elderly lady had caused a disaster this evening.
Joseph thereafter stood up and glanced at Louise.
“Please don’t misunderstand anything, Miss Hathaway. She’s sick, mentally,” Vivian explained to Louise.
Tunderstand, Louise responded with a warm smile. I’m not that unreasonable. I don’t care about Joseph’s previous love life.”
Vivian was happy to hear that. “You’re such a good girl! We are so blessed to have you in our family!”
Joseph never once said a word.
