The Runaway Groom
Chapter 39

Chapter 39

Irene had hit Whitney so hard that her palm was numb, and her eyeswere filled with fury. “You're a doctor. You know that an amniocentesisto a mother in early pregnancy will cause a miscarriage. A slap is a lotless than what you deserve!”

She would not be this merciful if anything were to happen to her twins! On the other hand, Whitney had never ever suffered such indignationand humiliation her eyes went red as she snarled, “Irene Spencer!”However, she had barely raised her hand when someone caught herwrist, and she turned to replace Zachary watching her.

“W-What are you doing here?” she stammered.

Zachary shoved her aside. “Did you think you could do anything youwant if I'm not around?”

“She hit me first!” Whitney cried, pointing at Irene. “Can't you see myface?”

It turns out that Zachary had seen Irene do it, but he had also heardtheir entire conversation. “You were trying to hurt her baby, weren'tyou?"

Whitney could not say anything to that, and turned furiously to glare atIrene. “Don’t get so full of yourself!”

Once she left, Irene’s nerves finally eased, but Zachary was staring ather. “What happened to you? How did you get pregnant? Was itIsaac?” Irene shook her head. “No.” “Then who's the father?” Zachary'svoice became louder, but he quickly noticed his own agitation andlowered his voice. “You don't even have a boyfriend-how did you getpregnant?” Irene hung her head. “Don't ask.” “How could I not? You'repregnant without getting married, so are you raising your child alone?Just tell me who it is. Did they dump you? I'll help you!” Zacharyexclaimed.

He was actually surprised that Irene was pregnant, because she hadalways been conversative and preserved her integrity.

And yet, here she was, pregnant out of wedlock. “I don’t know,” shesaid, and despite always replaceing it hard to talk about that night, she didnot keep it from Zachary. “Isaac and I are married in secret, but there'sno love there. My father just wanted a connection to his family, and theJeffersons could not refuse—my grandfather had once saved Henry, and my father used that debt as leverage.”

Zachary was not at all surprised, as he had already sensed thatsomething was unusual when he found out that Irene was acquaintedwith Isaac.

He also knew that Irene’s father had always treated her harshly, buthad never imagined that she would be forced to be Isaac's wife!

“Well then, how did you actually get pregnant?” Zachary asked. “..." Itwas once again something hard for Irene to talk about.

“Were you raped?” Zachary realized that he was out of line afterasking, and quickly explained, “Wait, I don’t mean...”

“No.” Irene, however, was not upset. Despite the harshness of it, shecould not deny that she had made a mistake.

However, she had definitely not been coerced.

“It was consensual, but I don't know who it was.”

Zachary felt his cheeks twitching. “Do you really think Isaac would letyou live if he replaces out? His wife, pregnant with someone else's child? You know his ego-he’s going to smother you!”

Irene suddenly realized that she had never considered that problem, but she had only just found out that she was pregnant herself!

“Please keep this a secret for me. I don’t mind a divorce, but not beforemy mother has fully recovered. At least let her get better before shereplaces out, and I'll leave this city after the divorce.”

With the money Lionel had given her, she could sustain a living, andshe still had a job.

“Just get an abortion,” Zachary reasoned, feeling a terrible sense ofdisappointment just then. “Why give birth to a child whose father youdon't know? You're not making sense!”

Irene simply flashed a bitter smile. “It's my child.”

How could she bear to cut down her own flesh, growing inside her ownbody? Looking up to meet Zachary's gaze, she said, “I'm feeling a littlesick. I want to check if my children are sine.”

“I'll make the arrangements,” Zachary replied-though he did not agreeto her keeping her children, he did not want to see her suffer either.Be that as it may, Whitney stepped out from the shadows after they leftthe room, her eyes twinkling, “So that's what happened!”

In reality, she never left the room, and simply hid herself.

Now she understood that there was no love at all between Irene andIsaac. Also, Irene did not even know that her children were Isaac's afterhe got her pregnant that night.

Isaac did not even know that Irene was the woman from that nighteither, even though they were married!

“Hahaha!!!” She laughed out loud. “I still have a chance!”

After leaving work in the evening, she headed to the Light Groupheadquarters and intercepted Isaac!
