The Runaway Groom
Chapter 68

Chapter 68

It was Samantha.

Before this, Lionel had come to ask Irene so that she could speak withIsaac, and to persuade him to be lenient on Ricky.

Irene, however, refused to help-which meant Samantha's son wasgoing to prison.

Even if he would not be serving a long sentence, he would have acriminal record, and his career options would be limited even if hecompleted his studies.

Naturally, she was at once annoyed and furious, and hated Irene for nothelping, believing her to be callous.

That was why Samantha showed up at the hospital-she would make ascene and humiliate Irene!

Having gathered journalists at the scene, she dropped to her knees inher campaign to get Irene flamed-so that everyone would think of Ireneas an ingrate who refused to help her brother. As she cried, shecomplained, “Ricky is your brother! Why do you refuse to help him?! Doyou have a conscience?! He's your only brother...”

She bawled so loudly that those who did not know would think that shesuffered a great injustice.

Moreover, since there were a lot of people near the hospital entrance, acrowd soon gathered to enjoy the drama.

Without knowing the full picture, the sight of an older woman kneelingin front of a younger woman was enough to win everyone's sympathy. Moreover, Samantha was good enough an actress to swiftly direct allhostility toward Irene.

As everyone began to whisper and criticize, some of the gullible heroesof justice began to scold Irene. “How could you be so unreasonable?Letting your mother kneel and beg? How could you be so young but soheartless?” Samantha promptly joined in, “Someone is bullying herbrother, and she could have helped! But she refused! And she still callsherself a sister!”

Irene watched coldly as Samantha continued her antics. If she wantedto kneel, she could do that as much as she wanted to-Irene just had toleave.

Nonetheless, as she tried to do that, Samantha promptly lunged at herand wrapped herself around her foot, crying relentlessly, “Saysomething! Are you going to help Ricky?!"

Even though Samantha was perfectly aware that Ricky had made amistake and as such

must be punished by the law, she believed that the incident could havebeen resolved out of court.

If Isaac did not press charges, he had enough influence to expunge theentire incident from all records—but only if Irene was willing to askIsaac. As long as she did that, Ricky would still have hope.Nonetheless, Irene snapped coldly, “It's his own fault!"

Samantha promptly retorted, “He's your brother!”

Irene hated that the most, and so exclaimed loudly, “You're just myfather’s mistress and a homewrecker! Your children were never relatedto me!”

She tried to speak as loud as she could, because there was no one onearth who would side with mistresses or homewreckers. Though someof the bystanders began to shift to Irene’s side, Samantha promptlyshot back, “How could you lie about me like that?! You're the one who'srefusing to help! You really are as heinous and as ungrateful as yourfather said! Selfish, callous, and ingrate-yes, that's what you are!”Samantha rambled on, as if she was just passing a message fromLionel.

In the end, Lionel would always be Irene’s biological father, andSamantha knew that Irene would not stay immune after learning thather father said such things about her.

That in turn allowed Samantha to drive them further apart!

To no surprise, Irene’s heart almost stopped when she heard whatLionel said about her. So that was what he thought of her? The changein her expression was a sign to Samantha that her lies had taken effect,so she went even further and said, “After you refused to help, yourfather started breaking everything at home, and was shouting howmuch he regretted not strangling you at your crib! That he should neverhave let you live!”

Irene’s hands were at her sides, twitching ever so slightly.

Still, she soon gathered herself, her gaze turning even colder then. Atthe same time, Zachary arrived for work. When he saw what happened,he promptly called in hospital security to order the crowd to disperse.Walking up to Irene, he told her, “Alright, dispersed! Nothing to seehere-do what you've come to do!” With that, he started to leave whileshielding Irene.
