The Wannabe Warrior -
Chapter 100
Zane POV
I woke to a pain in my neck and my back. I had fallen asleep on the table in the library, where I was looking through some information on people who survived the mate loss and how some believed, why they lived through it, and I guessed it had come down to how the relationship was. Those who have survived, were either not having a good time with their mate, towards the last few years, or the mate was not his fated mate, but a chosen mate. Somehow that made a difference, and though dad had loved mum, their relationship for the last few years had been strained, with mum pulling away from dad, and she had never really been a good mum.
I had Mary as a motherly type figure and there were a few more there for me over the years.
Giving my neck a rub, I stood up and stretched my back, leaning backwards with my hands on my lower back, until I felt a pop and sighed in relief.
Madison, if awake, would wonder where I slept last night. I was eager to see how she was doing. I looked around the room, deciding whether to put all the books away first, and shrugged my shoulders and turned to the door.
I rushed up the stairs, two at a time and pushed the door open, to replace an omega in there cleaning the room.
She jumped at the sudden door opening and the door opened with such force it scared her.
‘Sorry, Zane.’ She lowered her head to me, as if she had done something wrong, when it was me who rushed in the door.
‘I thought the room was empty, meaning it was ready for cleaning.’ She says in a very soft voice, almost a whisper, hoping her quiet voice would not raise my anger. Though why they feel that way is beyond me, most of the lower pack members act as if I would harm them, yet I have never raised a hand to them or punished them in any way and it hurt my feelings that they felt this way.
‘No, it is I who must apologise for bursting in as I did, please continue, I had thought Madison might still be in here.’ I nodded at her and left the room; sad I had missed Madison and for scaring the lovely girl cleaning the room.
I went further down the hallway and knocked on dad’s door.
After getting no answer, I slowly pushed the door open and saw his room had already been cleaned and no sign of dad.
Confused, I leave that floor and head to the dining room, hoping to see Madison at the table.
Joy rushes through me as I see not only my mate at the table eating, but talking happily with dad, he looks so much better than I had expected, he has colour back and is laughing with Madison, clearly on the mend.
You would not know he was so close to death yesterday.
‘Dad, you look great.’ Before, I leaned down and kissed Madison on the cheek and patted dad on the back.
‘Yes, son, I am feeling a lot better, we will be having a meeting soon, in my office. I will explain then.’ he said, acknowledging my greeting, and continued to eat.
I got the message; this conversation will have to wait for the closed doors.
The table was a buzz of conversation. None at the table seemed to know dad was sick or what had happened to Luna. They had not asked and she had been in the dungeon a few days before she got sick. It was interesting how little anyone had spoken about missing people. It was as if the person was never there.
Dad stood up and I followed along with Madison and the others that had been part of our private group. This had me wondering what was going on.
As I walked past the ballroom, I was surprised by the amount of decorating that had been done. The room looked a wash of colour and had a dazzling array of streamers and other fancy hanging decorations. It seemed to be a rainbow of colour and it looked marvellous. The ball was getting closer and the excitement could be felt by the buzz of happy people rushing around the packhouse.
Jonathon locks dad’s office door and we all enter the inner office; a screen is already up with a graph on show.
Once we had all sat down, dad looked over at Madison and smiled, making me wonder what had transpired while I was asleep.
‘Okay, before I get to the reason we are here, I wanted you all to know was, that Madison has the gift of healing and has healed my wolf from the separation sickness and I am feeling a lot better. This healing is a special one. I doubt Madison can show up at the hospital and just start healing people. It is not that sort of gift. Some more investigation needs to be done. I am sure the goddess will reveal what gifts she has bestowed on Madison as time goes by.’ Dad started the meeting to say why he was well and I was so shocked that Madison had healed him somehow.
The room turned and looked at Madison, who looked embarrassed by all the attention she was getting.
I pulled her over and kissed her on the lips and the others in the room came over and gave her a hug. Making her go even redder.
‘Now, the reason we are here. Madison, will you share what you have put up on the screen? I, for one, am interested in knowing what those graphs and names are about.’ Dad said while pointing to the screen.
