The Wannabe Warrior
Chapter 153

Madison POV

I awoke suddenly.

The sound of weeping woke me.

It was not the sound I expected to hear.

I opened my eyes to see a young child sitting at the end of my bed crying.

When the girl saw me awake, she jumped off the bed and hurried out the door.

Soon, a woman and a man came back with the young girl and she was dismissed as they saw that I was awake.

‘About time you woke up. Do you know you have slept for three days, I was beginning to think you would never wake.’ She took out a stethoscope and started checking me over, and tutting every now and then.

After a while, another lady walked in and I knew immediately that this was not a nice person, but I kept my face passive and did not look at her in the eye.

‘Madison, how are you dear?’ This woman made my skin crawl just hearing her voice. I can’t say what it was, only it made me uneasy just hearing it.

‘I am confused, but nothing is broken.’ I said softly.

‘Good, we shall move you to a room and get you cleaned up.’ The woman did not introduce herself, just made her statement and walked back out of the room, with strong quick strides, her head held high and she held an air of authority, higher than the average Luna would.

‘Who was that woman?’ I whispered to the doctor, still staring at the door. The woman had left by.

The doctor burst out laughing before answering, ‘Gladys, she runs this pack, so a sort of Alpha Luna.’ The doctor seemed to be pleasant and jolly, and liked the Alpha Luna? That seemed to be so wrong. How could you like a woman like that?

Not long after the doctor left the room, a woman came and encouraged me to get out of bed and walk with her to the packhouse.

She never said a word during the whole walk and she stopped and opened a large brown door to a room on the second floor of a very beautiful looking packhouse, though the first woman, Gladys, was not the nicest person. I could not help but admire that this place was beautiful and very cold, snow was covering everything and the river I could see in the distance was frozen over and kids were skating on it, all a very happy place by the look of it on the surface.

The room she had opened the door to was spacious and warm, a large double bed, a wardrobe, bedside table and my own bathroom, all the things you would expect in a guest room and that confused me. I thought I was a prisoner, not a guest.

I walked over to the window and looked out. It was locked and there was no way to open it, so that option as an escape route was gone. I could not open the window, which meant I could not climb out and down.

The door was not an option either, as I heard the woman lock the door after she left, so I didn’t have to go anywhere for now.

I went to the bathroom and wondered if I should shower.

When I looked in the mirror, I was surprised to see how bad I looked and, turning my head, I was pleased to see I still had the communicator in my ear. Lucky they are waterproof, so I could have a shower and not worry about removing it. I wondered where they put my jeans, and remembered I had placed another mic in the pocket, but I had used the magnets to hold it in place, so if they had washed the jeans and returned them to me, I should in theory get the communicator back.

Before I got a chance to make up my mind about the shower, I heard the door unlock and a young man and Gladys walked in, and behind her was a younger girl carrying a tray of food.

‘This is your room for now. I am a little busy at the moment and do not have time to spend with you. This is my son, Jacob. He might pop in from time to time and chat, get to know you a little better. Linda here will serve you meals each day. They are the only two you will see for the foreseeable future. Shower, make yourself at home and when I replace time I will come and talk to you more about what I expect from you.’ She was abrupt and no nonsense, looked like she was used to having people do her bidding, but I had seen the reports from Alpha’s office at the Dark River pack and though I had not seen her picture, I just knew she was the one behind all those terrible reports.

The tray was placed on a table and all three walked back out of the room and I heard the lock click.

I had a shower and put on some clothes they had left me and sniffed the food. It seemed to be okay, I could not smell any drugs in it. So, I ate some of the soup and left the rest. I was not yet up to eating, even though I had not eaten in three days.

The window view was lovely and I wondered if I would get to go out there any time soon.

I fiddled with the latch and it did not give.

Walking around the rooms, I saw only one place that had even a remote chance of trying.

I thought it might be a tight squeeze, but it could be worth giving it a go and hoping to escape through it, and that was an inspection cover in the ceiling in the closet. It was a tiny square but I might be able to squeeze through it. I was not yet fully healed, so I would have to wait to try and escape.

I turned on the communicator.

‘Gerome?’ I called softly.

‘Madison, thank the Goddess, let me call the others.’ An excited Gerome replied and I heard him shuffling about as we waited.

A few moments later, I could hear Gerome talking to someone.

‘Madison?’ Zane’s beautiful voice was heard over the mic and into my ear.

‘Hello Zane, how are you?’ I asked, trying to stay calm and confident.

‘How am I? I should be the one asking how you are., he chuckled and it was the sweetest sound.

‘Don’t know where I am, it is very cold and the river is iced over, so somewhere to the north.’ I told them.

‘We have a general idea where you are and who you are with. Be careful with that woman. She is dangerous.’ Zane warns.

‘Yes, I understand, I read some of the files before I boxed them up and sent them to you.’ I replied honestly.

‘Sweetheart, how are you holding up?’ Dad asked me, and I nearly cried hearing his voice.

‘So far so good, I don’t know how long I get to keep the communicator, but I will leave it on most of the time, so you can hear what is going on. When someone comes in the room, I can’t leave it on all the time, there are some places I don’t need it on, like when I have a personal moment, until they discover it and take it from me, I will attempt to have it on as much as possible.’ I answered softly, unsure if they had the technology that I had.

‘We are so thrilled to hear your voice, we have been so worried.’ Ezekiel added, as he listened to the conversation.

‘Sorry it took so long, I have been out cold for three days, and have only recently woken up.’ I answered honestly.

‘What?’ Zane screeched.

‘They injected me with a sleeping potion. I slept for a little while and woke up in a vehicle. It was so uncomfortable that I put myself into a deep sleep. I woke once in the hospital and did not like what I was hearing, so I went back to sleep. Dad, you know I can go into deep sleep when I get stressed, and the ride was so bumpy and painful it was easier to sleep through it, and now I am recovering.’

‘Take it easy sweetheart, we are getting some troops together and, hopefully, be on our way to you soon. Hold tight.’ Dad said and I could tell he was emotional.

‘Love you dad.’ I said, not sure if he heard me.

‘Love you too, sweetheart.’ Dad replied and I heard him leave.
