The Wannabe Warrior -
Chapter 193
Madison POV
We reached the man-hole-cover and I popped it open, and looked down. It was dark and nothing seemed to have changed, even the clothes they had put in the closet for me were still hanging on the shelves as if they expected to replace me and have me return.
‘Wait here, I will try and be quick.’ I let the three men know before I let myself drop to the floor in the closet. I moved quietly to the door and looked up at where the camera was situated and breathed a sigh of relief and I noticed no red light.
on.
I walked to the door and slid a chair under the door knob, I pulled the table across and climbed up and moved the camera so it was looking at the ceiling and not the room. I then pulled as much of the furniture across the door, to delay any one entering it.
Then, satisfied that I would not be disturbed while I was trying to get Peggy out, I went to her and looked her over. Yeah, she was in a bad way, but I could not risk healing her yet.
Peggy’s face was black and blue, her eyes almost swollen shut, her lips cut and bruised, her clothes were torn and I could see she most likely had a few knife cuts on her body and the amount of b***d on her clothes told me she had lost a lot of b***d, her left hand was broken and fingers on her right hand were also broken.
I lifted her unconscious body up onto my shoulders like she weighed nothing , and walked to the walk-in-closet. I moved to the area below the ceiling.
‘Drop the rope.’ I called out softly to the men above, and the rope dropped in front of me.
I wrapped the rope around Peggy’s shoulders and dragged her over, closer for the guys to lift her up, hoping I didn’t make her worse than she already is, but I had little choice.
‘Pull.’ I whispered and held her legs as they lifted her up to the ceiling. After a few attempts, they managed to get her through the hole and drop the rope for me to climb up too,
I went to where the bed was and retrieved a blanket and returned to the rope, dangling from the ceiling.
It was easy this time, with the rope around me and strong men pulling me up, I was out in one swift movement.
I replaced the cover and had two men carry Peggy between them, hoping she did not g***n out in pain or make any kind of noise.
When I reached the door, I opened it slightly and looked down.
Nothing, no one waiting to capture us, all seemed to be clear.
‘How soon before the next patrol?’ I asked on the mind-link.
‘Four minutes.’ Came the reply.
‘Peggy is with us, and will wait for the next patrol to pass.’ I said, and the four of us waited just inside the door, and four minutes seemed to take forever.
‘Patrol had past, come down now.’ Zane called and I opened the door and sent the men with Peggy down the stairs first.
Once in the shack, I had the men throw snow over our footprints as they had when we left to rescue Peggy. This was to try and hide our tracks, both ways, and not to lead Gladys to our escape tunnel.
We didn’t want them to replace this tunnel.
l hoped all was okay.
It all seemed very easy.
Our track to the tunnel inside the shack was covered up and made it harder if someone followed to see where we had entered the tunnel or that there was even a tunnel there.
I felt I might have been over cautious, but when it came to Gladys, the outcome of her getting in the tunnels was not one I wanted to think about.
Together we entered the tunnel, and I made sure the stone that was the door was locked back in place, and put a lot more debris to block it from anyone entering this way from the other side.
Once the group had moved to the first blockage, the guys climbed through first and I handed Peggy over to them. With the help of Zane, we blocked up the hole we climbed through and moved to the next blockage and did the same. Once I was happy we were deep enough into the tunnels, I called a holt to our movement.
‘Zane, would you consider we are far enough away from the tunnel entrance to risk waking Peggy now?’ I asked. I was not sure how far we had travelled, I had been too busy giving Peggy energy to keep her from dying and having my wolf monitor behind us.
‘Yes, we are nearing the tunnel exit where we came in.’ he said, looking at the other men for confirmation.
Laying Peggy down onto the ground, I placed my hands on her, one on her head and one on her chest, and left the glow of healing light leaving me and into her. The light from my hands glowed blue, then green and lastly white before winking out and Peggy started to wake up and her eyes popped open startled and then she frowned and, a fleeting smile.
‘Where am I’ she asked as she sat up and looked around.
‘In one of the most likely forgotten tunnels, it comes out in the compound.’ I answered her, waiting for her to ask her next question.
‘You rescued me?’ she looked at me in shocked surprise.
‘Yes, you were in the room I was in at the time I was in their custody.’ Again I waited for her to ask her next question.
‘How did you know that room was where I was?’ her confusion was obvious.
‘I left a bug in there, we heard they tried to get the codes from you but you refused to give them.’ I replied, still waiting for the question that had not come yet.
Peggy stood up and looked around.
‘Thank you for coming to save me, my pack would have left me there to die and then give my daughter the alpha title.’ She said sadly and I knew then that Alex and Zakary would never have come back to save her, they would block off their pack and wait for some clue as to this packs demise.
‘You’re welcome, we could not leave you in the hands of that woman.’ Zane spoke for the first time since we stopped.
‘That is not our way, but I am grateful. Come, let’s get back to the pack, and talk some more. And Madison, I am assuming you healed me, thank you.’ Peggy looked determined and yet she still did not ask the question I had expected from her. Which was; Where was Zeek?
Maybe this is their way to manage things. Losing someone was common. Maybe she already knows the answer to that question and did not need to ask.
