The Wannabe Warrior -
Chapter 39
Madison POV
The sound of the alarm woke me. I rolled over and found the cold empty side of the bed. It seemed like Zane had not gone to bed. Groggily, I get up and take a shower, and do my morning ablutions.
My growling stomach had me heading to the kitchens for a bite to eat before I went hunting for my mate.
The kitchen was a hive of activity, as the staff got food ready for the morning rush, I gave Mary a quick hug and she handed me a plate of food, took a seat on the corner table in the kitchen and started to devour my meal.
I watched the bustle in the kitchen, amazed that no matter how busy it seemed, the kitchen ran with efficiency and laughter, the girls and guys managed to seem to enjoy their jobs, and no tension was apparent in the kitchens. Mary ran a tight kitchen, but friendly, understanding that a little bit of fun now and then makes everyone work that much better.
Pity it was not like that everywhere. I often hear the cleaning staff complain about a mess here and there, and how nasty this one was, whether it was Mary’s influence or that the kitchen doesn’t have to deal with people’s messes and complaints about whatever gripe that they had on the day. Who knows, but I enjoy coming into the kitchen when I am down and observing them, and it makes me feel so much better.
I finished my meal and put the plate on the sideboard with other dirty dishes and headed off to Gerome’s office. I needed to check on the equipment, and replace out if Graham had placed some cameras around the caves. I couldn’t remember if Graham was going out today or last night.
Entering the room, every monitor was lit up, over fifty screens now adorn every spare centimetre of the walls, it looked like a computer or laptop was assigned to every twelve monitors. Gerome was not in the room, so I walked around looking at all the monitors. Graham must have gone out last night, as the last few cave entrances were now on screen. I found the camera that was in the dungeon and saw all twenty Dark River Packs and then ten Northern Packs and the six rogues were all in this dungeon, one I had never been in. I saw the Northern pack prisoners walking back and forth in their cells. I turned up the sound on one of the computers and listened. They were talking to themselves, making no sense to me, so I turned down the sound and moved to the next screen.
This one was on Karen. She was banging on the door, so I put the sound on and listened. She was vocal about letting the Luna know she was in the cell and that she would get her out, and I wondered what that was about.
I left the sounds on, and walked to the other monitors, looking at the ones that Graham had set up. He did a good job; the views were as good as mine were. I was pleased with the result. They must have been out all night to get so much done so quickly.
Watching, I noticed that the one with the clearing was being used as a training ground, just like we assumed, and the mines had had a lot of activity. I turned on the night recording from last night at the mine and watched at double speed. The activity at the mine tripled. A horse and cart had arrived, loaded with lots of boxes, and they were all loaded into the mine, some seemed to be food and some others, I had no idea, would have to ask Zane to look and see what he thought.
I put the monitors back to how Gerome had them and turned off the sound on Karen and left the room.
I am off on the hunt for Zane.
As I passed through the dining hall, I was stopped by some ladies who wanted to say hello. They were up at that time of day. Many women do not seem to venture out of their beds before nine am. It is only six am. The ladies looked tired, like they had not slept at all last night, and I wondered what happened during the night.
Did I sleep through something important?
After making my hellos and hugs to those ladies who stood for one, I headed towards the hallway that the Alpha office is in. As I passed by the entry reception room, I noticed Zane entering the front door of the packhouse, he looked like a mess, his hair all over the place, scratches and cuts on his arms and legs, and b***d on the track pants. I changed my direction and rushed to his side.
‘What happened?’ I asked, anxiously.
‘Come with me to the Alpha office, we will talk there.’ Zane said and gave me a warm k**s.
Zane walked with confidence, as if seeing me had given him extra energy, he put his arm around my waist and directed us to the Alpha office.
Opening the door without knocking, Zane pulled me in with him, Alpha was on the phone, when he looked up and his eyes widened as he said to the person on the other side of the phone that he would call them back.
‘Report.’ Alpha says calmly.
