The Wannabe Warrior
Chapter 58

Zane POV

I stormed out of the dining hall, fuming. I needed to replace Madison and see if she was alright. No wonder she has been acting off. I hope she does not reject me. That would be the end of me, I am sure.

Taking the stairs three at a time, I flew up the stairs to our room, and calmed myself outside the door, before opening the door slowly, wondering what mess I would see my mate in.

The room is dark, no sounds or smell of my mate. I walked to the bathroom, still no mate. Where could she be? I wondered.

Leaving the room, I head to the monitoring room, and only Gerome is there, sitting behind a computer, typing away at rapid speed, oblivious of my entrance.

‘Have you seen Madison?’ I asked as I looked around the room at the monitors for a moment.

Gerome jumped and turned to look at me.

‘Nah, not here, hey man, I am sorry for what happened at dinner, that was way out of line. I had no idea your mother did not like Madison. What has Madison done, for your mum to dislike her so much?’ he asked.

‘I have no idea, Madison has been so focused on the rogue situation, I did not think she had a chance to say or do anything to annoy mother.’ I answered truthfully.

‘Yeah, Madisin is a force to reckon with. When she gets the idea going, you can’t distract her, no matter what you try, she bounces back to the idea until she has it working the way she wants it to, one smart girl there.’ He says with pride in his voice.

‘Any changes at the rogue camps?’ I asked, wondering why Gerome was so busy on the computer.

‘Nope, all quiet.’ He replied.

‘What are you doing, so focused on the computer, I thought the data was all entered?’ looking over his shoulder at the screen.

‘Madison is creating a communicator. I was putting the links to the program she had made, though she is not happy with it yet. I thought I could speed up the end process, if I started mapping the links now, and had only the final step to take, once she is happy.’

‘Communicator?’ I asked, surprised.

‘Yeah, she was making it like the dots, but can’t get it to stick when shifting forms.’

‘That is a sticky thing?’ I jest, and Gerome g*****d and then laughed at my joke.

‘The communication part works fine, but where to put it so it works in both ways has been a stumbling block.’

‘I will chat with her when I replace her. Maybe I can help with that.’ I suggested.

‘Good luck buddy, I think you are going to need it.’ Gerome said as I walked out of the room.

Not sure where to look next, I had to go to the little shed. She has things drying and making chemical stuff with, I have no idea what have the plants things are, but she looks like she knows what she is doing, so I don’t interrupt.

The shed was dark. I opened the door and smelled wolfbane. Yuck, I closed the door and looked around the area. Nope. Not here either.

I headed to the kitchen, knowing she might be hungry, having not really eaten any dinner, and found Mary, pulling out some cakes from the open, and staff running around, with dishes in hand, popping in and out. The smell was divine, and I was tempted to grab a cake that had just come out of the oven.

‘Oh, Zane, can’t wait for my cakes to hit the dining table?’ Mary teases.

‘Have you seen Madsion? She left early and I am having a little trouble hunting her down.’ I say, as I take one of the cakes, Mary has it in her hand, offering it to me.

‘Madison, has not been in the kitchen. Have you thought of using your nose? That is what you have it for. Back-track to the last place you saw her and follow where her strongest scent takes you.’ She teases me, and bops me on the nose.

Rubbing my nose, my eyes lighted up. Of course, why did I not think of that? For a werewolf, you would think I would have thought of that. Our sense of smell is one of our strongest assets.

I gave Mary a huge hug and kissed her on the cheek.

‘Lucky I am not a few years younger or I would give Madison a run with her claim on you.’ Mary says and whips the towel at me.

I laughed, ‘Yes, Mary, that you would.’ I giggled as I headed back toward the dining hall in the hope of replaceing her scent.

Reaching the stairs, I smelt my mate and followed the trail, and found myself outside a bedroom door on the second floor, and hoping to the goddess that it was her father’s room.

I knocked softly, hoping not to sound threatening.

Jonathon pulled the door open a little bit and poked his head out.

I asked him if he had Madison, and he said yes and that she was asleep, and though he was not going to let me in, I was relieved that she was with her dad. If anyone could help her, it would be him. I just hope he puts me in a good light and convinces her to stick with me and not let my mother’s behaviour influence her decisions.

I returned to my room and showered, and climbed into my cold empty bed, and felt a little sorry for myself, before I eventually succumbed to sleep.
