The Wheel Of Fortune
Chapter 40- Going Back

NADYA SHARMA’S POV

“By now, you all must have a basic idea about the situation. The situation is sudden and we are preparing for the worst. Unfortunately, we don’t know what they are planning next but after some discussion, the Council is planning to send Extanders to rescue the survivors.” Cai pauses his speech to let us take in the information before continuing, “Many of you are from the other side and we are aware that the situation is concerning but we demand your cooperation.”

“The rescue mission will begin tomorrow and 10 teams will be allocated to each city. The list of the Sequence will be announced shortly and you all are required to stay there for at least a week and assess the situation. Once the Sequences have assessed the situation and made sure the city is safe enough for the army, the troops provided by His Majesty will take over. Please cooperate with them accordingly.”

Cai passes over the mic to Ada, “The rest of you will be staying back and working like you normally, expect the security around the cities will be increased and you all need to be at alert all the time... That will be all, now I will be announcing the Sequence appointment.”

I let out a yawn and put lean my face on the fist. I couldn’t sleep all night because of all my worries. It’s true I hated my parents for a long time but people change over time and now, I do care about them. I keep thinking if they are fine or are they even alive? My brother should be fine if I know him any better.

As Ada announces Sequence 13 will be going to my home city, I glance over my team members. Without a doubt, Ryou would have arranged this. I put on a small smile when I notice Liana looking at me with distress despite not being fine in any way.

Once the meeting is over, we all go to the cafeteria to have lunch before heading to the Sequence room. As soon as I enter the room and raise my head, my eyes clash with familiar brown eyes. Ryou’s eyes linger on my form for a few seconds before turning towards Saul. They step to the corner and start whispering among each other.

I look away and step into the meeting room, taking the first seat at the long wooden table. Ryou takes the head seat and Saul sits opposite me. “The Council had chosen Nadya to be the Vice-Captain of our Sequence. “Ryou keeps an eye on my expression while the announcement.

So suddenly? My mind goes blank. Why did they choose me? It should be Saul, right? They must have made a mistake. I don’t have the qualities to get along with a group. I tune out all the smiles and congratulations directed at me and face Ryou with a questioning look.

“I am not joking, it’s true.” Ryou answers my questioning eyes, “And I think you will manage.”

I blink away all the memories and nod with a stiff smile. For some reason, he looks at me a little longer than usual, like he wants to ask something but turns away just when I thought he would ask. “I met the captains of other Sequence before coming here, “He open a map of the city on the table, “we are going to cover all this area.” He circles his finger around the outermost part of the city.

“Now onto the plan, I want one of you to stay back excluding Nadya, Saul, Valencia, and me. Who is staying?”

Slowly, Hiroyuki raises his hand, “I will stay.”

“Okay, you will open the teleportation circle every night, from here to,” He points to the small building on the map, “our Sequence room to give us food and to send survivors to this side. Valencia and you will be staying back.”

He pauses and glances at Liana, “Liana, don’t use your powers unless necessary and stand back.” His point is reasonable since Liana is the only healer on our team. “After reaching the city, we would divide into 2 groups. One would search for the survivors and clear out the area while the other team will go to Nadya’s house... We have kill order.”

Ryou looks at me for confirmation, and I nod. As long as I get to check my house, I am fine, though there is a possibility they must have fled the community. “Wait, what was the day the incident happened?”

“Sunday.” Elodie answers after calculating.

My brother is a homebody unlike my adventurer self and usually stays home even on weekends, so they must be together. I was planning to go to his school to replace him but now that is not necessary. Ryou continues his instructions and lets us off so we could pack our bags after an hour. I go back to my Sequence room, where I stayed last night, and take out a packed bag.

While I am rechecking my luggage, Ryou enters the room with his own bag and notices an antique hand clock in his hand. “That clock....” I trail off, and at the same time, Ryou turns towards me.

“You have seen this clock?”

“I...think so, I am not sure. Is it yours?”

“It is now...” He inquires my face for something before opening his mouth, “What if we don’t replace your parents and brother at home?” He was worried about this? It’s not like I haven’t thought of the possibility of them becoming tuhu or going missing. I answer back truthfully, “I don’t know.”

I really don’t want to know what will happen then.

“Yuck.” Fajah waves off her hands to get off the black blood with a disgusted face. “I don’t even have a change of clothes. Do I have to wear this all day?” Her orange sweatshirt stained with black blood almost looks brownish but somehow, she managed to protect her jeans Ten bodies of tuhus surrounding us lie motionless.

“Where to next, Nadya?’ Liana comes to stand beside me after I am done checking my leather jacket for stains.

“Just one more turn and we will be there.” Deadly silent street accompanied by the rising sun and chilly winds. I shiver and bring my jacket closer with one hand as the other remains occupied with the sword I brought with me. Since they are still not aware that I have awakened my power, I decided on a physical sword rather than the enchanted one. Ryou said it was safe to tell others now as I have gotten control of my abilities but I still I want to hide it till I can.

I walk over the dead bodies carefully and lead the way.

On the way to my house, Ryou suggested us to check and clear the area so it might take another hour to go through all the houses and kill the tuhus that will come our way. On normal days, it would take just 10 minutes to reach my house from this point.

In the back, Ryou crosses the area on the map after we kill the tuhus.

As soon as we came here, Elodie, Gloria, Marlon, and Saul got into one group while Ryou, Liana, Fajah, and I grouped into another. We all will meet at the decided building at 9 pm once we are done with our respective work.

With a nervous look, I climb the stairs in front of my house and push open the door. I look around the room and turn towards the staircase which leads me to the first floor where my parents reside. The structure of this house is different from my temporary house in Transvius. Since houses here are designed in a way that the leaseholder and the owner, both can reside in the same house.

My soles brush against the dust and gravel lying on the floor. How did so much dust get into the house? Before I could think of the answer, my eyes fall on the pieces of destroyed furniture outside the door, near the balcony. My heart starts racing, did tuhu got in?

I stop all my movements altogether after hearing a whimper from inside. I open the door in one agile move.

The darkness from the room surrounds me and I freeze at my place.

What the hell happened here?
