Chapter 38 Haggle Over Every Ounce
The noise of Lily's thumping on the door echoed throughout the villa.
Even Vivian, who was practicing in the piano room upstairs, came down to see what was going on.
When Maria opened the door, she found herself face to face with a fierce- looking Lily.
The joy in the latter's eyes couldn't be concealed.
"You stole something from the house!"
Seeing that there was an audience, Lily became more excited. She pointed an accusatory finger atMaria and said to Vivian, "Miss Jenkins, I found her stealing. There's no debating it this time! I evenhave evidence!"When Lily's words finally registered in Vivian's mind, she had to suppress a squeal ofdelight.
Vivian had a strong desire to prove that she was superior to Maria, and had tried to make things difficultfor the latter several times in the past but to no avail.
But now, it seemed that Lily had caught Maria red-handed! Although Maria couldn't have stolenanything valuable, this kind of despicable behavior was enough to leave a serious blot on hercharacter.
Even if Maria became Mrs.Wilson in the future, in Vivian's eyes, she would always just be a petty thief.
"Lily, don't shout. It's not good to let the neighbors hear it,"
Vivian chided, perfectly playing the part of a noble lady.
She straightened her back and raised her head as if she was looking down on Maria, even though thelatter was a few inches taller than her.
"Maria, did you steal something from our house? How could you? It would be embarrassing if the newsspreads."
Vivian walked up to Maria with folded arms and looked at her up and down, trying to replace the stolengoods on her.
"Oh? Do you have any evidence?" Maria asked Lily, ignoring Vivian altogether.
As usual, her voice was calm and emotionless. She didn't sound aggrieved, nor was she desperate todefend herself.
Being stared at by Maria this way, Lily felt like she was a stupid marmot while Maria was a fierce prairiewolf.
"How can you act so high and mighty after stealing something?"
Lily shouted, suppressing her fear.
"Miss Maria, you stole the flour from the kitchen, didn't you? That flour is a high-end imported good.Itcosts dozens of dollars a pound!"
Hearing that the item Maria had stolen was just flour, Vivian felt a little disappointed.
Even if Maria had stolen the flour, how was it a big deal? It was not as if the kitchen of the Jenkinsfamily home was a grain warehouse.
Even if Maria stole all the flour in the kitchen, it would not be a big enough matter to file a police case.
But on second thought, Vivian concluded that stealing flour was just the kind of thing that a country girllike Maria would do.
Even though the Jenkins family had many luxury goods just lying around in the house, Maria didn'tknow their value.
The only thing she had thought of to steal was food from the kitchen.
"Why did you steal flour? It's too embarrassing to even talk about.Anyway, it's not a big deal. You shouldgo to Mom and Dad to admit your mistake.Don't worry.I'll go with you," Vivian said decisively, as if shehad the final say in the matter.
Hearing this, Lily was secretly happy.
Despite how generous Vivian sounded, she insisted that Maria apologize to Mr.and Mrs.Jenkins.
It was clear that Vivian also hated Maria.
Having worked for many rich families before, Lily was quite observant and immediately saw throughVivian's thoughts.
Although Vivian spoke to Maria in a kind and gentle way, it was plain to see that she didn't intend to letgo of Maria.
After all, if Vivian cared about Maria even a little, she would have scolded Lily and covered the matterup.
"I was hungry, so I took some flour to make some noodles for myself. Is that considered stealing?"
Maria asked calmly, looking at the two women in front of her.Lily scoffed.
"If you just wanted to fill your stomach, then of course that’s not a problem. But how much could ayoung girl like yourself have eaten? There seems to be at least a pound less of flour in the kitchen.MissMaria, are you claiming that you can eat a whole pound of needles in one meal?"
A normal person would eat about a pound of food a day.
Judging by Maria's slender figure, it was impossible for her to eat at one meal what a normal personwould eat in a day.
"Miss Maria, stop denying it.You are a thief!" Lily said in smug satisfaction.
She had just finished speaking when Julie slowly walked down from the second floor of the villa, carrying an empty bowl in her hands.
