To Be Yours Again novel (Alec and Jenny) -
Chapter 1288
Chapter 1288 Just Dealing With Some Annoying Stuff
Although Gilbert fought a lot with Zack, he still viewed Zack and Jenny as some of the most important people in his life. He was taken in and raised by Jenny's grandfather as a young orphan; to him, Jenny and Zack were family. Therefore, he would never allow Zack to get in danger for a woman, and he was being civil for not pulling tricks to break up the couple.
"That's enough, Gilbert. Calm down. I know you care a lot for Zack, but we can't do anything about his relationship. It's all up to him. If he's willing to die for Janet, our protests won't do a thing." After the incident, Jenny finally realized that Zack must have fallen hard for Janet. Why else would he sacrifice his life for her? In the beginning, she thought that the couple might break up due to conflicts after some time, but it seemed that she was naive.
"I don't think he's that stupid. He'll know that the woman isn't for him after this incident. He won't go back to her." Gilbert sounded confident.
Jenny didn't share the same optimism, but she kept her thoughts to herself because there was no point arguing. She'd rather leave the discussion for when Zack regained consciousness.
After that, Jenny was ready to stand guard at the hospital with Gilbert. Alec was against the idea. "Gilbert will be here. Let's go home and rest," he suggested.
Ever since Jenny agreed to his marriage proposal, he had been addressing Gilbert more easily and cordially regardless of Gilbert's perception of him. Of course, Gilbert wasn't too fond of the closeness, but he didn't bother to argue with Alec. "Alec's right. You should rest. I don't know when Zack is waking up. Go rest. I'll get someone to inform you when he's up."
"But Zack..."
"He won't wake up quicker just because you're around. It's useless," Gilbert retorted.
Jenny agreed with him. She should rest and be mentally refreshed to face everything after Zack woke up. From what Gilbert told her, the men behind the attack were quite something. When she left the hospital with Alec, she found Janet at the entrance, making a call.
"Why do you treat me this way? Am I not your daughter? How could you sell me off for that useless son of yours? Do you know who those men are? Do you know what you're getting me into?"
Janet was wailing and howling. Jenny couldn't hear the response from her parents, but she assumed that parents who had the audacity to inflict such harm on their children would not be moved by tears and speech. They wouldn't have done that to Janet if they had an ounce of conscience.
Janet hung up and turned around, only to see Jenny standing not far away. Her hysterical communication with her parents must have been overheard by Jenny, and she felt rather ashamed of it. Jenny felt awkward because she didn't intend to eavesdrop. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to..."
"It's fine. Just dealing with some annoying stuff. I'm used to it." She smiled bitterly. She should have succumbed to her destiny after years of being exploited by her family. Had she not crossed paths with Zack and stopped financially supporting her family, her parents wouldn't have had to put her as collateral. At that time, she recalled Gilbert's words. "Can you be sure this won't happen again?"
Sure? How could she be sure? She could not promise anything. The more she dwelled upon her thoughts, the further she sank in despair.
