Paul didn't feel to need to hide anything from Jenny. He proceeded to explain the whole situation. He then started to blame himself. "Gilbert had warned me before, reminding me that Marigold's condition wasn't good and asking me to check on her, but I didn't think much about it or take it seriously. If only I'd gone to see her, the situation wouldn't have become this dire."

Marigold had a brain tumor compressing her intracranial nerves, which led to intracranial bleeding. Due to that, her situation was extremely critical right now.

Paul wasn't the only one feeling immense guilt for his neglect toward his sister, Jenny blamed herself too. Marigold had come to her previously, complaining of intense headaches. Although Jenny had suggested a brain CT scan, Marigold chose not to do it in the end, fearing it might adversely affect her baby.

Now, it seemed there were already signs back then. If she'd been more proactive in getting to the bottom of her condition at that time, perhaps things wouldn't have come to this.

Even so, Jenny could guess the ultimate choice Marigold would make as a mother. Even if she had discovered the tumor back then, she wouldn't have chosen to terminate her pregnancy in order to undergo treatment.

As Jenny thought about Marigold's unfortunate circumstances, Paul suddenly looked at her and said, "Aren't you a neurosurgeon? Don't they all praise you for your outstanding medical skills? This kind of tumor removal surgery should be a walk in the park for you, right?"

"Paul, you should calm down first," Alec said, shielding Jenny behind him. "Jenny doesn't know how Marigold's condition is right now. How can she perform surgery on her?"

Jenny came back to her senses. Looking at Paul, she replied, "Rest assured. I would definitely do my best in this surgery even if you don't remind me to."

After that, Jenny left and went off to ask the medical in the emergency room about Marigold's condition.

As for the child... They were all unable to spare the child any extra thought at the moment.

Jenny had an idea. She quickly sent a message to Alec, asking him to inform Gilbert to come over. Even if the surgery were successful, Marigold would be unable to care for the baby due to her health condition. As the child's father, Gilbert should take responsibility during such a situation.

Although they'd already agreed on the financial support and he'd given Marigold the money, the situation was different now. Jenny hoped that he would come and take care of his child. Other than that, she asked Alec to arrange a paternity test for the child and Gilbert. They needed to know whether the child was really his.

After making all those arrangements, Jenny entered the emergency room.

Meanwhile, Gilbert was stunned when he received the phone call. His child was born, but the child's mother was critically ill, and he'd become the child's sole legal guardian. He looked at the suitcase in front of him and fell into deep thought.

He'd already started packing his bags, preparing to leave early tomorrow morning. But now, this news came like a bolt out of the blue. Despite feeling utterly bewildered, Gilbert immediately made his way to the hospital.

When he arrived there, he saw his own child. Perhaps it was due to their blood connection, as the child, who'd been crying all this while, suddenly stopped crying upon Gilbert's arrival.

Alec appeared behind him in the next second. "I'll take a few strands of your hair for the paternity test."

Just as he reached his hand out, Gilbert stopped him. "There's no need. He's my child."

Those eyes and that little face simply resembled his too much. Even without a paternity test, Gilbert was certain that the child was his.

Hearing that, Alec didn't insist. As long as Gilbert acknowledged it, then all was good.

Alec explained Marigold's current condition to Gilbert and stated, "You'll have to take care of the child for the time being. If you're inexperienced in this, I think it's best to hire a nanny."

"Of course I'm inexperienced!" Gilbert exclaimed internally. He looked at the tiny infant and had no idea where to start or what to do. Therefore, he followed Alec's advice and found a nanny for the child. He also bought a whole bunch of baby supplies.

Gilbert thought he would despise this child because of how it was conceived. But upon laying eyes on the little one, an inexplicable feeling of joy took over his heart.
