To Be Yours Again novel (Alec and Jenny) -
Chapter 429
Chapter 429 So What?
Ben and Evelyn put on serious faces when they brought up the purpose of their visit. He nudged her, only to receive a glare. She thought, "Is he seriously making me the bad guy every time?"
Still, she collected herself and said to her son, "Christopher, I heard that you brought home a woman from Parrington-that small city."
Although the couple was not the heir of the Spade Group, they were highly interested in every single move of their son. They immediately received the news when Christopher showed up with Jenny and hurried to the Spade Manor.
Christopher's face soured even more when they brought up the issue. "So what?" He glared at them and reined in his anger.
"We shouldn't interfere in your life because you're an adult. But you have to be careful when it comes to marriage," Evelyn went on. When she noticed Christopher's silence, she added, "A woman from a small city is not a good match for you. You're going to take over the Spades business. If you marry someone from a dinky place, you'll end up as a laughingstock."
Looking serious, she seemed genuinely concerned about her son's best interest.
Christopher found her suggestion ridiculous and hilarious. Jenny would have to agree to marry him in the first place for Evelyn's objection to be valid.
"Your mom's right. If you want to get married, a better candidate would be the daughter of the Jacobsons. Well, she's technically the offspring of the family's side branch, but she's related to the Ten Elites, after all! She's way better than that woman from the small city. The Jacobsons' daughter is interested in you as well. I can set up a date for the both of you if you're fine with it." First, they put Jenny down, then casually mention the Jacobsons' daughter. Christopher would be dumb not to know what they were up to.
The couple was slightly annoyed at Christopher's long silence in the face of their lengthy persuasion.
"Can you say something? Do you agree with the idea or not?" Evelyn felt a little anxious, secretly grumbling that Christopher was unlikeable.
He finally burst into laughter at her question. "What do you want me to say? Don't you think you're hilarious?"
"Christopher Spade!" Ben's temper was about to flare up again. At this point, Harvey had caught up on Ben and Evelyn's plan. He glared at Ben and said coldly, "I was the one who agreed to Christopher pursuing Jenny Walter. Do you have a problem with it?"
The couple finally learned the woman's full name, but they were more shocked by the fact that Christopher had received Harvey's blessing to go after the woman, judging from the disbelief on their faces. Knowing that Harvey had spent his life working hard just to expand the family's influence, they were puzzled that he'd approve of his grandson pursuing a woman from a small city. Wasn't that a waste of Christopher's arranged marriage?
Harvey didn't want to explain anything to the perplexed couple. "If that's all you want to say, you can leave now. The manor isn't that huge anyway. There's no extra space for the both of you."
Ben and Evelyn were speechless by Harvey's announcement. Sure, the Spade Manor might not be the largest house in Bardoff City, but it was by no means cramped. The manor had more than ten servant quarters, and it was ridiculous for Harvey to claim that there was no space for them.
"Dad, I'm not sure why you'd agree, but I hope you think it through. If Christopher marries that woman from the small city, you should also give up on your dream of building our family's influence." Ben appeared slightly angered by his father's apparent senility.
Christopher merely scoffed and said, "What does that have to do with you? No matter what, you'll receive your share of the yearly bonus."
"You!" Ben stood up furiously. Christopher did the same while staring into Ben's eyes and even deliberately rubbed his wrists. In an instant, tension filled the room.
