“Could Daniella have given me a disease because she’s not clean? Casey thought as he dialed

Daniella’s

number.

At Xander Residence

When Daniella received Casey’s call, she had just entered her room after dinner. She said gently,

“Casey.”

Casey asked in a rather cold tone, “Have you been sick lately, Ella?”

Daniella was stunned and replied, “No, Casey. Have you?”

Worried, Daniella wondered if Casey had transmitted his illness to her.

Casey’s tone softened as he said, “It’s alright that you don’t have it. I’ll be staying at Jordan Residence

for

a while. We can stay in touch over the phone.”

Daniella replied, “Sure.”

After they hung up, Daniella quickly undressed to inspect her body, fearing the worst. She didn’t replace

anything unusual.

She thought, ‘If Casey has a disease, my life will be ruined. I can’t rely too much on anyone. I must

control

both Casey and Evan.‘

Daniella’s phone rang just as she was about to take a shower. It was Evan calling, and she answered

eagerly.

Evan’s voice came through immediately. “Let’s terminate the contract.”

Daniella’s smile vanished. She wondered if this was related to her situation with Caroline. She decided

not to be manipulated and asked, “My actions weren’t satisfactory, were they?”

Evan said, “That’s not the reason. I need to end the contract, and I’ll compensate you for the penalty.”

He

hung up promptly.

Daniella’s anger distorted her expression as she thought, It’s time to take action.”

She dialed a number, and someone picked up. “You mentioned an effective herb for post–surgery

leukemia. Where can I get it?” she asked.

A week later, Caroline went to the hospital with Paige to have her sutures removed.

Paige, who was driving, complained, “Where’s Casey? He’s supposed to be at the company, but he’s

been

missing for days.”

Caroline hadn’t been in touch with Casey during this time and replied, “I have no idea. Let’s not talk

about

him; it’s giving me a headache.”

Paige yawned and said, “Alright. Speaking of which, how are things between you and Evan now?”

Caroline looked outside and answered, “We haven’t been in touch. He visited me when I had a fever,

but i

haven’t heard from him since. I think he’s busy.”

Paige said, “He went on a business trip. I thought he’d still keep in touch.”

Changing the topic, Caroline asked, “Mardi Gras is coming up. Will your parents be traveling this year?”

Paige replied, “Yes, you must take me in.” She gave Caroline a pitiful look.

Caroline reassured, “Don’t worry. You’ve spent Mardi Gras with me for years.”

Paige added, “Right. It’s almost time to deal with Daniella’s situation, isn’t it? Mardi Gras is just around

the

comer.”

Caroline nodded with a solemn expression. “It’s next week. Are you free in the afternoon? Come with

me.”

Paige asked, “Where to?”

Caroline had lunch with Paige after her suture removal. Then, Paige followed Caroline’s directions for a

two–hour drive to an old residential area.

Paige looked at the aging neighborhood ahead and commented, “Are you sure this is where the

journalist

connected to Daniella used to live? It looks like a retirement community.”
