Sylvia finally made a turn from that street. She knew she couldn't see Kendrix from here. She also knew that his eyes were fixed on her back until she disappeared from his sight. She did not know why he asked her that question, nor did she know what he meant by it. Why was he staring at her that way when she left?

It was an uncomfortable feeling.

She didn't rush back to the Carter residence. Instead, she stopped by the streets, wanting to spy on him.

However, she was also worried that he would catch her in action.

Therefore, she stopped at the corner, took out her cell phone, turned it on, and leaned against the corner of the wall, extending it with her arm outstretched. She took a picture of him. Even if his figure was far along the street, she knew it was him.

He was the only one on the street and he was looking in her way.

She immediately retracted her phone and looked at his picture as if she had done something wrong.

Taking a deep breath, Sylvia waited for another five minutes before trying to take another photo of him. When she did, she realized that he was still there. This was surprising.

He stood there, unmoving; like a sculpture standing in the cold wind.

Her heart ached for him.

She hesitated for a moment before walking out of the corner. She wanted to go back to him.

However, when she walked out, he had already turned around and left.

His back was facing her, and he was walking in the other direction.

And he was getting further and further away.

Sylvia breathed a sigh of relief. Fortunately, Kendrix had already turned around and left, or she would have been embarrassed to be caught by him. She had acted too impulsively.

If she was indeed caught, wouldn't her efforts these days go to waste?

She knew what a difficult path she had chosen. If she wanted to go on, she must endure the loneliness that came with it.

She hoped that her 18th birthday would come soon.

She turned around and quickened her pace back to the Carter residence.

Little did she know, Kendrix had turned around as she turned to leave.

The Carter residence was bustling.

William had slept for 40 minutes in the afternoon.

He followed a structured schedule. He made sure that his naps would not be any longer than 40 minutes which was typical for a soldier.

When Sylvia came back, she saw William coming out.

She immediately ran towards him, "Great-grandpa, are you up from your nap?"

Ernest and Sebastian were not in the living room. They were likely in his study.

Heinz and Grace must be resting, especially with Grace being a pregnant mother of twins.

Things must be hard for her.

William was under the care of his butlers, who were a middle-aged married couple. The husband took care of his household needs while the wife took care of the chores. The couple were particularly attentive to him.

Besides, William had always been in pink health and was not muddleheaded, so it wasn't hard on the couple to care for him. Heinz had wanted William to live with them, but William was not accustomed to their lifestyle, and he didn't want to impose.

Helpless, Heinz could only arrange for someone to take care of William.

"Go on a walk with me," William said to Sylvia. He would always go on walks after his afternoon nap.

However, the butler came out with a wheelchair. Though William was able to walk on his own for a while, he would be tired on the way back.

"Sure, Great-Grandpa." She held his arm immediately. "Let me help you."

"Help me?" He smiled merrily. "Well, put your back into it and do it properly. If I fall, I'm doomed."

She immediately yelled, "Nonsense! Don't say such things, it's the New Year. You won't fall. You will be just fine."

She held onto his arm tightly, anxious about his callous remark.

He smiled and said, "Well, I am old. Even if I die now, I've lived enough."

He had outlived the average lifespan of the citizens of the country.

In fact, he had outlived it by a long ten years!

He was about to reach his hundredth birthday. How could he say that he had lived enough?

He was open minded about matters of life and death.

It would happen eventually. Perhaps he would go to sleep and never wake up.

He had no control as to when his time would come. It was all in God's will.

"Great-grandpa, if you say that again, I will cry." Sylvia mouthed a word of threat to him.

William feared her tears the most.

"Alright. I'll drop it. Let's go." He held the crutch with one hand as she supported him on the other arm.

He was wearing a down jacket. As he grew older, it was important to keep warm.

The butler watched carefully while pushing the wheelchair forward, worried about William's wellbeing.

He said to his wife behind him, "I won't take the wheelchair. Come to us with it in 20 minutes."

William would usually take a break after 20 minutes. Without the wheelchair, he could watch out forthem.

The three walked out of the house and along the road that Sylvia had just taken.

He seemed to have just returned from going about his errands and whatnot. Sylvia froze when they met face to face, and her grip on William's arm tightened.

William frowned as he looked at Kendrix, then at Sylvia.

Sylvia eyed Kendrix, debating whether she should greet him.

It was basic manners to greet him. She would come off as impolite if she did not.

After all, Kendrix did nothing to offend her.

Before she could say anything, Kendrix spoke, "Happy New Year, Mr. Carter."

William looked at Kendrix in confusion. "Do you know me?"

Kendrix smiled. "I'm acquainted with Sylvia."

Sylvia didn't expect Kendrix to speak, let alone say so.

William immediately turned to look at her. "Who is this pretty young man?"

She almost laughed at William's response.

"Great-grandpa, this is my teacher, Kendrix Trevino." She replied,

Kendrix nodded without a doubt. "Yes, what a coincidence."

"Your teacher?" William looked at the two with a frown. "How is he your teacher?"

Sylvia froze. She didn't understand what her greatgrandfather meant. Why couldn't he be her teacher?

Not that she wanted Kendrix to be her teacher.

She muttered quietly, "I don't want him to be my teacher either." William's eyes flashed as continued eyeing the suspicious two.
