Candace was lying on the bed with her eyes closed. She had no strength left because of the pain and illness. She was feeling better and fell asleep after the fluid in her abdomen was drained out. She was really so tired that she didn't wake up even when someone came close to her.

Lawrence removed his mask, revealing a resolute face.

He saw Candace asleep and sat down beside the bed. He stretched out his hand and grabbed her hand. The skin on the back of her hand was full of wrinkles and she looked very old. Lawrence was gazing longingly at the woman on the sickbed.

Perhaps Candace felt someone holding her hand or she felt there was something amiss about the atmosphere in the ward, so she opened her tired eyes.

As soon as she saw the face of the man in front of her, she was shocked and panicked. Then, she said, "Lawrence!"

"Yes, it's me!" He said while nodding his head.

She suddenly shouted anxiously, "Don't look at me."

She quickly turned her face away. She didn't want to meet his eyes, let alone be seen by him.

She didn't have any makeup on, and she looked totally different from her appearance in the past.

Candace deeply understood that she was hideous.

She didn't even want to look at herself in the mirror.

Now that this man was right in front of her and saw her ugliness, it filled her with horror.

She wanted to keep her beautiful appearance in the man's mind forever. She wished that he could always remember her as an elegant and gorgeous woman.

However, the man pulled her hand firmly towards his mouth. He held Candace's hand tightly with his both hands and kissed them.

They felt warm.

She froze for a while and withdrew her hand in haste, but she had not enough strength to pull them back.

He was very strong. He held her hand tightly as if he was holding the whole world.

Lawrence saw her pained expression and it hurt him to the core, but he still said softly, "Candace, the relationship between you and me has long surpassed life and death. No matter what you look like, you will always be the prettiest girl to me."

She shook her head and said, "No, Don't look at me! Darling, please, don't look at me!"

Lawrence said in a low voice, "Don't be so afraid in front of me. Nobody can stay young forever. Now, you are old, and so am I."

"Besides, I don't care about your appearance at all. I'm not that kind of person."

"We've experienced so much, will I still care about the outer beauty? Our relationship has already surpassed everything else. Your beauty has long been in my heart."

Candace still shook her head and said with a sob, "No! I really don't want you to see me in such a horrible state. Please, leave quickly."

He said solemnly, "I won't leave, at least not for the time being. Candace, I know you don't want to stay in the hospital at all. When you are better, I will bring you away."

She rejected him and said, "Just go, don't look at me. Don't remember my current appearance. I don't want you to see me die!" "Candace, I'm the only one in this world who can understand your feelings. I know that you actually want to stay in my arms even if you die. I can't take part in the previous journey of your life, but I will take part in the remainder of it. It's not easy for us, a bittersweet couple, to be together. How can you bear to leave me alone for the rest of my life?"

When she heard this, she became very sorrowful.

She bit her lips tightly and there was a painful expression on her pale face. She turned her head and met Lawrence's gentle gaze. She said sadly, "Why are you so silly? I've already reached the end of my life while you still have a wonderful journey ahead of you. I hope you will not be lonely for the rest of your life, but I can't accompany you. I can't do it anymore."

He said with a wistful smile, "Without you, I'll be lonely until the end of my life. My heart will die with you when you are gone."

Tears flowed out of Candace's eyes. In her blurry vision, she looked at the man's handsome face and felt very dejected. She said, "Lawrence, you're really too silly. It's not worth it for someone like me." He looked at her, and it killed him to see her that upset.

He had been looking at her all the time. There was not hatred in his eyes, but only tenderness.

She felt even more downcast under his gaze. She looked away and said softly, "Why are you keep looking at me? I'm too ugly!"

She said, "I know you love to be beautiful. It's just that you are sick, and the illness changed your appearance."

She shook her head again and said, "You shall leave now. They may make things difficult for you if they replace out later. I don't want you to end up in trouble because of me."

Lawrence chuckled and said dotingly, "You have already done the same for me, haven't you? You have been working so hard for my sake, so what if I will be discovered by them because of you?"

She was a little anxious when she said, "Lowell can't hold on any longer. He may soon tell Grace about it. What shall we do?"

He didn't care and said, "What are you afraid of? It's his choice to say whatever he wants. My son is not a coward. I'll be gratified if he has the guts to tell them."

Her eyes widened as she shook her head. She said, "But if she was to replace out that Lowell is our son, will she still treat him well?"

Lawrence furrowed his brow slightly and sighed. He said, "Lowell won't tell anyone so easily. Don't worry too much about it. Leave everything to me."

However, she was more worried. She earnestly said, "Lawrence, why don't you listen to me? I am really anxious. In this world, I worry about you even more than Lowell. Can you listen to me this time? Just leave."

He reached out to touch her cheek, smoothed her hair, got up and gently hugged her. After that, he said in a low and hoarse voice, "Candace, wait for me. When you are in a more stable state, I will bring you away."

She refused and cried out, "No, I'm already a dead woman. How can I drag you down again? Lawrence, I haven't given you much, how can I still drag you down in the end? You go, don't come to see me anymore, please!"

His breath was in Candace's ear when he said, "Silly woman, how can I let you face death by yourself? I will accompany you. As I said, I won't leave you behind."
