Chapter Twenty–One: Targeted
Later in the afternoon, Isabella, determined to tackle her tasks independently, decided to return to Edith’s office to address the matter she had initially sought help with.
After knocking several times with no answer, she cautiously opened the door, only to replace the office empty. Realizing Edith had played her dirty, Isabella felt a surge of anger,
She made sure not to touch anything and quickly left the room. As the day neared its end, Edith stirred up a storm by declaring that a vital document, containing company secrets, had vanished from her office. Word spread like wildfire across the company.
Alexander was unfortunately on a business meeting and couldn’t intervene.
Isabella tried to clear the air but Edith was stubborn and unwavering. She blamed Isabella for the loss of the documents.
Isabella astonished “Are you insinuating I took the documents?”
“Who else will, if not you?” Edith mocked.
Edith, agitated by Isabella’s composed response, continued to accuse her of being involved in the disappearance of the document. “What’s with the attitude? You’ve made a mistake and you’re now stopping others from pointing it out?”
Isabella remained firm “What do expect me to do? To confess to a crime I never committed? I’ve told you countless times, I didn’t take anything but you just keep on throwing accusations at me.”
An accuser confronted Isabella “How could you do something like this? This is absurdness! Leaking documents and theft in the company.
Isabella, remaining calm, looked at the accuser and replied, “I understand your concern, but I assure you, I had nothing to do with it. I respect the company and its secrets. I can’t betray the company”
“You’re the thief yet you have the guts to deny it. I’ll make sure the boss hears about this.”
Isabella, tired and agitated. “Do as you please. But you’re being too loud, keep quiet for a while, alright?”
As the police arrived, Isabella cooperated fully with the investigation, providing any information that could help replace the missing document. She knew that the truth would eventually come to light and her innocence would be proven.
They began their inquiry and Investigation. Officers checked the security footage, which showed Isabella as the sole visitor to Edith’s office that afternoon. Edith hadn’t been back since noon, only returning after claiming her items were missing and that Isabella was the main suspect.
After reviewing the video, an officer warned Edith, “Don’t be hasty in accusing others without proper evidence. You’re under suspicion too, you haven’t scaled through.”

Edith looked at the officer, baffled. “Why would I steal my own stuff. On what basis? How will I benefit from such?”
Drake, who was coming down from the top floor in the glass elevator when he saw a bunch of people and police officers outside Isabella’s office. Drake got really worried and called Alexander right away. Alexander came back to the office as fast as he could after getting the call.
When Isabella saw Alexander, she gave him an apologetle smile. “I’m sorry, it looks like I’ve made more trouble for you. It wasn’t my intention but what can I do when trouble follows me like a glue”
“It’s fine. What’s happening here?”
Isabella didn’t start explaining but let the police officer tell Alexander everything
After hearing everything, Alexander laughed a little. “No way she’d steal from us. I trust her and her capabilities and this is certainly not among them”
Edith’s was really nervous and sweating a lot. She remembered the scissors she broke to mess up her own drawer lock were hidden under her desk.
Edith said to Alexander, “But Isabella was the only one in my office all afternoon. You gave me that missing document,
and now it’s gone, and I feel really bad about it. I was suppose to keep it safe but
I’ve let you now.
Alexander looked at Edith kind of seriously. He had only given her the job because her brother, Declan Smith, who was Alexander good buddy, asked him to. Alexander knew Edith liked him, but he just wanted to help his friend.
Edith went over to Alexander, speaking in a gentle tone. “Alexander, I’m sorry.”
“You should address me as ‘boss‘. It’s more fitting,” replied Alexander.
Isabella noticed Edith’s sudden shift in demeanor, her sweetness feeling out of character, and it made her uneasy. ‘Earlier today, she was full of challenges and toughness with me. Now, in front of a guy, she’s suddenly so soft and seems off–balance. What’s going on here?”
Edith attempted to step closer to Alexander seeking some kind of physical contact, but Luke pushed her away without hesitation. He pushed with enough strength that Edith ended up falling.
Isabella quickly knelt down and helped Edith up. “Don’t stress too much, Edith. Everything will make sense once we figure it all out. The truth will prevail”
Yet, it was clear Edith had plenty of reasons to be worried.
Edith’s eyes darted fearfully to the area under her office desk where, unmistakably, the broken scissors were recovered. She kept shaking and sweating profusely.
The officer spoke to them, “Getting the results will take a bit of time. Let’s wrap this up tomorrow.”
Alexander responded with a polite nod. “Sure, appreciate your help.”
Yet, Edith wasn’t ready to back down. “Alexander, don’t you trust me?”

Without turning, Alexander replied, “Don’t call me Alexander. I trust only facts and evidences.
He then held Isabella’s hand and they left together.
Edith watched them go, seething with jealousy. She thought bitterly about how Isabella, who had only been at the company for a mere two months, had already grown so close to Alexander. In her mind, she vowed to make Isabella pay for the humiliation she went through.
Isabella hesitated to hold his hand, aware of the crowd of co–workers drawn by the commotion. Nonetheless, Alexander held her tightly, unfazed by the onlookers.
har “Don’t
Some colleagues approached Edith, trying to console worry too much. Since you know she entered
your office, you’re clear. We trust and believe what ever you say.”
Another colleague agreed, “Yeah, it must be her doing. It’s all her fault. She’s such a bitch”
Shaking with fear, Edith left her office in a daze and drove out of the underground garage. She parked on the side of the road and called her brother, Declan.
Declan was livid. “How could you do this? You’ve let me down. Alexander is my best friend. Didn’t you think about me? How this will affect my relationship with him? I never thought you’d be this selfish Edith”
Edith had thought Declan would support her and back her up like he has always done, but he was furious after hearing what happened.
“Go and apologize to him now, or I’m done calling you my sister. And I mean it this time around”
After the call ended, Edith leaned on her steering wheel, crying loudly. She wailed as she regretted how things had escalated. Her intentions had only been to taint Isabella’s reputation and for people to misunderstand her. But it had all backfired. She blamed Isabella for everything that happened
