Ultimate Evolution I Became the Master of the World -
Chapter 34 The Ghost Baby Arrives
During the day, Declan gave Michael a call.
But he lost it when Michael asked for $500,000.
A high school kid asking for that kind of money? If it weren't for his daughter Sophia constantly bugging him about replaceing this Michael, he wouldn't have bothered.
What could a barely adult student know? Even if there were real ghosts, could he catch them?
Because of his daughter, Declan had been down in the dumps for the past couple of days. He took some time off work to stay home with her.
"Sophia's getting worse. The doctor said she's physically fine, no illness, just some nervous exhaustion and fright. Should we take her to see a psychiatrist tomorrow?" Sophia's mom, Seraphina, said, looking worried. Declan replied, "That's all we can do. That Michael is too greedy, asking for $500,000 right off the bat. How did our daughter get mixed up with such a shameless person? We should keep Sophia away from him in the future." "The first time I saw Michael, I thought he was trouble. He even wanted $200, no shame at all," Seraphina said with disdain.
As they were talking in the living room, suddenly, Sophia's bedroom door slammed shut, like something had run into the room.
Declan's face changed immediately, and he quickly stood up.
Seraphina, also shocked, said, "Honey, did you see that? It looked like a child ran into Sophia's room."
"Don't scare yourself," Declan said, though he looked uneasy too.
Because he also thought he saw a child run into Sophia's room.
The child was naked, with bluish-black skin, like a dead infant.
But the front door had been closed the whole time, and they were on the sixteenth floor. No way a child could get in.
The next moment, Sophia's scream came from the room.
Declan rushed over and opened the door.
The room was pitch black, the light somehow off.
But Sophia had been sleeping with the lights on these past few days.
Declan quickly reached for the switch to turn on the light, but he touched a small hand instead. The skin was soft like a child's but icy cold, with no warmth at all, like a corpse.
"What is that?" His heart skipped a beat, and he quickly pulled his hand back.
At this moment, Sophia, terrified, ran out of the room, pale and trembling.
"Sophia, are you okay? What happened?" Seraphina asked, holding her daughter.
Sophia was scared out of her wits, trembling in Seraphina's arms.
Declan mustered up the courage to turn on the light again. This time, he didn't touch the cold hand.
With the light on, the room was empty, no child in sight.
But the next moment, he was horrified.
On the floor, there were dirty little footprints, scattered around the bed, even on the walls and ceiling.
At this moment, Declan's inner resolve completely collapsed.
His hands trembled as he quickly picked up his phone to call Michael.
Michael was right.
Their house might really be haunted.
"Seraphina, take Sophia away from here. We'll stay at a hotel for a few days. It's not safe here," Declan said while dialing.
"Okay, I'll pack right away," Seraphina said, feeling the same eerie vibe in the house.
The call connected.
"Michael, is that you?" Declan asked.
Michael, lounging in the security room, answered, "Yeah, Declan, what's up?"
"Where are you right now? Can you come over quickly? We need to talk about that thing. The price is negotiable," Declan said urgently.
"I'm busy with work. If it's not urgent, we can talk over the phone," Michael replied.
Declan insisted, "I'm about to head out. Where are you working? I'll come to you."
He felt too uneasy at home and needed to see Michael face-to-face.
"Serenity Mall," Michael said.
"Alright, we're coming over," Declan said. He put on his shoes and tried to open the door, but it wouldn't budge.
He tried harder, but the door stayed stuck.
"Honey, what's wrong? Aren't we leaving?" Seraphina asked.
"The door seems to be stuck," Declan said.
"Maybe something's blocking it," Seraphina suggested.
"Let me check." Declan looked through the peephole.
A child, bluish-black and naked, was standing outside, holding the door. The child's eyes had no pupils and stared up at the peephole with an innocent yet eerie expression. Declan's face turned pale, and he stepped back in fear.
"Hello? If there's nothing else, I'm hanging up," Michael said.
"No, don't hang up," Declan grabbed the phone and said, "The child is standing outside my door. I can't get out. Can you come to help us? Money is not an issue." Michael was stunned, then his face turned serious.
The Ghost Baby was outside Sophia's door?
"I'll try to get there. Be careful and stay away from it," Michael said, hanging up and getting ready to leave.
"Hey, Michael, where are you going?" Nico asked.
Michael said, "I have an emergency. I'll be back soon."
As he left, Declan, still on the phone, saw the door handle slowly turning.
It seemed like the baby outside was trying to get in.
In a panic, Declan had a moment of clarity. He ran over and bolted the door, locking it.
"It's coming. It's trying to get in. Where's Michael? I need Michael," Sophia screamed in terror, on the verge of a breakdown.
Declan stepped back, still shaken. He looked at the door, feeling even more tense.
"Honey, what's going on outside?" Seraphina asked, still not fully understanding.
"Don't ask. Let's go to the bedroom," Declan said, feeling they couldn't leave through the front door. He led his wife and daughter to the master bedroom.
He turned on all the lights and closed the door.
He stared at the door for a long time, seeing no movement outside, finally feeling a slight relief.
But the next moment, Declan heard the front door opening.
'Impossible,' he thought, panicking.
The door was bolted. Even with a key, it couldn't be opened. How could it be opened so fast?
The eerie child he saw might really be a ghost.
'What do we do?' Declan thought in terror, looking at the window.
They were on the sixteenth floor. They couldn't escape through the window, and climbing to the next apartment was too dangerous. They'd be doomed if they fell from such a height. Were they just going to sit here and wait to die?
