Ultimate Evolution I Became the Master of the World -
Chapter 36 The Terrifying Ghost
From the moment Declan hung up the phone, time seemed to crawl.
He heard his front door creak open and sensed something had slipped into the living room. The occasional sound of things being moved around confirmed it.
It felt like a curious kid was messing around out there. But each noise made Declan's heart race.
The thought that the kid he'd seen earlier was in his living room made him feel a chill run down his spine.
He didn't dare open the door or even get close to it.
He was terrified the kid would show up any second.
But running away never solved anything.
The noises outside the living room stopped, like the kid had lost interest in the stuff out there. Then, faint footsteps got closer and finally stopped right outside the door.
"It's here, it's coming in. Dad, Mom, you need to leave now. It's here for me, I can feel it. You need to go," Sophia said, her voice shaking.
"Sophia, what are you talking about? How could Mom leave you alone?"
Seraphina wiped her tears and said, "Dear, what's out there? If we have to, we'll fight it."
Reminded by Seraphina, Declan snapped out of it. He pushed down his fear, looked around, and grabbed a coat rack, ready to fight. He was prepared to smash the kid to pieces as soon as it came in. "No, Dad, you can't. The detective said ghosts can't be killed. Call Michael, only Michael can help us, only he can save us," Sophia said, trying to stop Declan.
But Seraphina held her tightly.
"I already called Michael and offered him five hundred grand to help. He should be on his way. Don't worry, it'll be okay," Declan said, his voice shaky. Just then, the lock clicked.
The doorknob slowly turned, and with a creak, the door opened a crack. The crack got wider and wider.
Then, a child's head peeked in, its pupil-less eyes scanning the room, finally locking onto Sophia. Seraphina and Sophia screamed.
"Go to hell!" Declan, summoning all his courage, shouted and swung the coat rack at the Ghost Baby. But it ignored Declan, running along the wall at a terrifying speed and then lunging straight at Sophia. Its mouth opened wide, wider than any human's.
It had no tongue, no mouth cavity, just a pitch-black void, like anything swallowed would never come back.
It was going to swallow Sophia whole.
Declan felt a mix of fear and rage.
Sophia and Seraphina clung to each other, screaming in terror.
But then, the bedroom light flickered, turning red, the bulb transforming into a red eye, filling the room with an eerie glow.
With a loud bang, the Ghost Baby was sent flying, crashing into the wardrobe.
Michael stepped out from a corner of the bedroom, holding a phone. He was glowing red, with crimson eyes on his face and the backs of his hands, each eye moving slightly, staring at the Ghost Baby.
"I called you guys, but you didn't answer. I thought you were dead and was about to call the cops." Michael glanced at the Ghost Baby, shocked.
Earlier at school, the Ghost Baby was crawling on the ground, but now it had grown and could walk on its own.
This ghost was evolving.
The words on that human skin were right, the Ghost Baby in Nikolai's belly was unusual. Who knew what level of ghost it would become as it grew. 'Nikolai, you've really let loose a powerful ghost,' Michael thought.
Hearing Michael's voice, Sophia's fear turned to relief. Michael looked like her knight in shining armor.
"Are you Michael? How did you get in?" Declan asked, still shaken.
"If I couldn't get in, how could I earn your five hundred grand?" Michael replied. "This Ghost Baby is way stronger than I thought. Given the situation, I might need more money to deal with it." He wasn't kidding. Earlier, with four eyes, he could fend off the Ghost Baby. But now, it wasn't just a baby-it was a Ghost Child.
Its terror had definitely leveled up.
"God help us if it gets too strong for me to handle," he said, glancing at the others, ready to bolt.
After all, they were just classmates. Michael wasn't about to risk his life for them.
Declan, sensing Michael's hesitation, quickly said, "One million dollars. I'll give you one million dollars. There will be more if you can save us."
Michael sighed, "Another rich guy. I definitely underpriced this."
With that kind of money on the line, he couldn't back down.
He turned his focus back to the Ghost Baby.
The Ghost Realm was already open; he couldn't miss this chance.
The Ghost Baby slowly stood up, tilting its head and staring at Michael with its eerie eyes. Its bluish-black skin screamed death.
It wasn't hurt by the earlier kick, just repelled because Michael was in the Ghost Realm state.
"Ghosts can't be killed."
"Only ghosts can deal with ghosts."
These two statements weren't contradictory. Dealing with didn't mean killing.
'So Nikolai's words mean that only a ghost can repel another ghost?' Michael thought. Having faced several supernatural events, he was gradually overcoming his fear. Maybe it also had to do with becoming half-human, half-ghost.
"I don't know if you can understand me, but I'm protecting this family today. Can you let them go?" Michael said.
But before he finished, a bluish-black aura emanated from the Ghost Baby.
The aura spread, affecting the surroundings.
"Is this a Ghost Realm?" Michael trembled.
'Damn, it's learning and growing. This Ghost Baby is definitely not simple,' he thought.
"To be safe, it's best to send this ghost away first." Michael's expression changed.
The Ghost Baby suddenly stepped into the air, falling through the floor to the level below.
Michael took a step forward, his red glow flashing as he disappeared from Declan and the others' sight.
The Ghost Realm followed the Ghost Baby as it fell.
It plummeted downwards.
Just before hitting the last floor, Michael retracted the Ghost Realm.
With a loud crash, the Ghost Baby fell from the sixteenth floor to the ground floor, its body flattening into a grotesque shape.
Michael looked down at the Ghost Baby lying motionless on the ground.
He knew it wasn't dead.
Checking the time, he realized the Ghost Realm's limit was approaching.
"First, get Sophia's family out of here, then figure out the next step." Michael knew he lacked experience dealing with powerful ghosts and had to prioritize safety. He immediately disappeared from the spot.
Moments after he left, the Ghost Baby, which seemed to have turned into a pile of flesh, slowly moved its grotesque body and finally stood up.
