Chapter 16

This had to be a coincidence! It had to be!

If Yvette was the one who had saved Tristan, why had she never mentioned anything about it to him? And if it really was her, then what had he done to her over the years?

Tristan put Yvette's medical reports away and returned to his office. He sat there for th hole night.

Early the next morning, he called Daphne. "Let's meet, Daph. There's something I need to tell you."

Daphne arrived in the private room of a restaurant, looking exquisitely dressed. A waiter came over and took her coat. Tristan's gaze fell on her smooth, scar-free a

arms.

Four years ago, he had been in a car accident. He had been trapped inside the car, unconscious, and covered in blood.

Disregarding the danger, a girl had selflessly reached through the broken glass window to open the car door by force.

She had gotten a deep cut on her arm from the shards of glass. Jose had said that the wound would have definitely required stitches. 2

Hence, it was impossible for the scar not to be noticeable even after it had completely healed.

Tristan's gaze made Daphne feel a little unsettled. "Tris, you said you had something to tell me. What is it?"

Snapping back to reality, Tristan retracted his gaze. He took ore standoffish tone as he said, "Yvette is dead."

Daphne froze for a moment. Then, she exclaimed in shock, When did this happen? How did she die so suddenly?" She expressed immense surprise and disbelief outwardly, but a wave of unprecedented relief surged within her.

With Yvette dead, the last obstacle that stood between her and Xavier was gone!

"It happened yesterday. he died from excessive blood loss. Attempts to resuscitate her failed."

Tristan picked up a glass of red wine. He gently swirled the contents around a few times before downing it in one gulp.

As he drank, he caught the flicker of joy on Daphne's face through the glass. The subtle expression vanished the very next second.

"I guess it's fate," Daphne lamented with a sigh.

"She was born into a life others couldn't dream of living in a lifetime. She then forced her way into marrying Xav with her family's power. Her death must be some kind of retribution to balance the cosmic scales."

The word "retribution" echoed in Tristan's mind. For the first time, he found Daphne's words horrifying.

Was it a sin for someone to be born into a wealthy family?

He knew that the marriage between Xavier and Yvette was a business alliance. Even so, the fact remained that no one could have forced Xavier into doing something he didn't want to do. Daphne think Yvette deserved death just because of

that?

Tristan's lack of response made the atmosphere in the private room turn chilly.

It was then that Daphne realized she had misspoken and hurriedly corrected herself. "Tris, you know that I was only referring to Yvette when I said all that. After all, she was too scheming." Tristan hummed in respo

and poured himself another

Was Yvette scheming? He mulled over that question deeply.

He realized that Daphne was the one who always told him that Yvette was scheming. He had never truly witnessed any of Yvette's alleged devious ploys.

The only "scheme" he knew Yvette was capable of was her deep love for Xavier. She had been willing to please everyone around Xavier, including himself. Could that be considered scheming? The wine in his mouth suddenly became tasteless.

He had trusted Daphne for four years. She couldn't possibly deceive him, could she? How could someone who had risked her life to save him be a bad person?

His voice was unexpectedly hoarse as he said, "Daphne, I've been dreaming of the past lately-of you saving me. I dreamed that you told me not to be afraid and that everything would be okay.

"It's thanks to you that I survived. Do you remember all of
