Chapter 85: Aggressive Protest
The following morning, Jane once again made her way to the police station. Two officersaccompanied her to Lover Lake, where she recounted in detail the previous day's events. Theydiligently recorded every piece of information, realizing that they could not afford to omit anything.Patrick had urged them to uncover the truth and prove Jane's innocence as swiftly as possible.
By the time Jane returned to the Pansy Group, it was nearly noon. Stepping out of the taxi, she wasimmediately surrounded by a group of unfamiliar people.
"Who are you? What do you want from me?" Jane asked cautiously, her instincts on high alert. Thepeople surrounding her appeared hostile and uninviting. Could this be an attempted robbery inbroad daylight?
“Jane North!" A gray-haired woman stepped forward, her eyes blazing with anger as she grabbedJane's clothing. "Look, everyone! She's the murderer!"
Jane frowned and pushed the woman away, demanding, "Who are you? And why are you shoutingat me?"
"Don't you recognize me? You killed my daughter!”
The woman retained her balance and lunged at Jane again with tear-filled eyes. "You heartlesswoman! You pushed my daughter into the lake. My poor child is just twenty-five years old, and nowshe's in a coma because of you. I don't know if she'll ever wake up. Oh, Monica, what will I dowithout you?"
Jane realized that this woman was Monica's mother, and the surrounding people were likely friendsand relatives of Monica, who had gathered to confront her.
“I didn't kill anyone. Your daughter is still alive. Shouldn't you be by her side instead of causing ascene here?" Jane crossed her arms, her gaze fixed on Joan Betsy, Monica's mother.
The members of the group, like puppets on strings, charged toward Jane. One of them extended hi:hand to grab her arm. Jane was now trapped.
Just as she was ready to defend herself, a commanding and resolute voice rang out. "Don't youdare!"
Jane looked up to see Patrick approaching, radiating an aura that sent shivers down everyone'sspines. The crowd parted to make way for him, and even Joan fell silent, her eyes wide withastonishment.
Patrick halted by Jane's side, holding her hand with tenderness in his eyes. "Are you hurt?"
His worry and the warmth of his touch provided immense comfort to Jane. "No, I'm fine," shereplied, meeting his gaze with gratitude and relief.
Morton, who followed closely behind Patrick, wore a stern expression as he addressed Joan and theothers. "Who are you, and why are you causing trouble here?"
Joan, her voice quaking, identified herself. "I'm Monica's mother. Jane pushed my daughter into thelake; she's a murderer."
Morton reacted with visible disgust as he replied, "How dare you slander Jane?"
Turning to the head of the security guards, he ordered, "Escort them away."
With Jane's hand still in his, Patrick led her into the company building. "Why didn't you call me? Youcould have been hurt."
Patrick, who had been observing the situation from his office, had rushed down to ensure Jane'ssafety.
Jane smiled faintly. "I thought I could handle it on my own.”
Patrick tilted his head slightly, leaning in closer, and whispered in her ear, "I'm always here for you,Jane. Next time, don't face such situations alone.”
His flirtatious tone made Jane blush. "See you later!"
With that, she hurried to the secretaries’ office, leaving Patrick with a faint smile. He found herparticularly charming when she was bashful.
Arriving at her desk, Jane received the promotional photos from the photographer. She carefullyexamined each one.
The indoor photos from their previous session looked promising, and Jane was satisfied with theresults.
Sylvia, the employee sitting next to Jane, couldn't contain her excitement. "Jane, you won't believethis. You're trending online!”
Jane's attention was instantly captured. "What do you mean?"
