Unmasked
Chapter 22

I have been waking up tired of late. I am in my twelfth week of pregnancy and this week is straight from hell. I always wake up tired and I can’t do any chores without feeling like I am climbing a hill. My emotions on the other hand are spinning out of control my body feels like it’s being controlled by this little human and at the end of the day I am trying to count it all joy but how can I when it’s father is giving me more reasons to feel alone.

‘Ma’am Mr. Leo is here to see you.’ My house help announces. I am in the kitchen making myself some lemonade, I wasn’t expecting Leo. And the fact we haven’t spoken in weeks makes me wonder why he would just show up without calling.

‘Alright I am coming.’

I finish off with making the lemonade and join Leo in the living room. He immediately stands up when I walk in.

‘If it isn’t the best mummy in the world.’ He says wearing a huge smile.

I roll my eyes. I walk into his arms and we embrace lightly.

‘I will ask later about why you have been scarce but now I am concerned about why you look this tired.’

‘Let us go into the garden, the air there is fresher.’

He lifts a brow but I don’t give him the opportunity to respond. We walk outside and I ask the help to bring him some refreshments.

‘Why have you been avoiding me?’ he accuses.

‘I have been going through a number of things Leo, I just needed to breathe.’

‘From the look of things, it looks like you haven’t been breathing well.’

I laugh. He has a funny way of putting things into perspective.

‘I might have an idea of what’s happening.’

He stops speaking when the refreshments are brought.

‘I ran into Celine yesterday. What’s this nonsense that Zac is selling you out and you are getting life.’

‘Leo I am confused. Last I checked Zac killed Gabriel.’

‘What are you talking about?’

‘What do you mean what am I talking about?’

‘He kidnapped Gabriel and we held him hostage for a few days, it was there that he was killed and in my angry state I cut off pieces of his body one at a time.’

‘You have lost me. Didn’t Lona poison Gabriel?’

‘Which rock are you living under?’

‘I was the witness Zara, Musonda and Zac made me believe that she did it. In fact all the facts were pointing at her.’

‘Wait, so when Lona was arrested you acted as the witness?’

‘Yes I did.’

‘So how come this is information that Zac has forgotten? Why then am I being implicated in all this mess when there is a piece of the puzzle that they haven’t solved.’

Leo shakes his head. I can see that he is disappointed because there are parts of this story that we both didn’t know.

‘I don’t want to believe that they just deliberately omitted that part. Zac and Musonda are both aware that I know about that information.’

‘But what evidence is there? Maybe they have already thought this through knowing that you don’t have evidence.’

Leo stands up.

‘It can’t be a dead end, there is always a loop hole. There is always something.’

‘Leo what I don’t understand is how our system can be this corrupt, I don’t understand why I have to do life. I can’t understand because me being part of Plot 15 can not make me do life. And if Thando is that good of a cop as he claims to be, he should be able to see through this.’

‘Your husband thinks you did it?’

‘My husband is on the case and he is just waiting for me to give birth before he can throw me behind bars.’

‘Zara things are not adding up, there should be a loop hole somewhere. What if Zac is hiding something, what if he is being threatened to put you behind bars?’

‘By who?’

‘I don’t know. Your husband. His mother.’

‘Leo that’s absurd.’

‘Well you and I are the last people that should be using the word absurd. Thando knows the humiliation that is coming when the world replaces out the type of person that you were and it’s only in a short time before that happens. Does he strike you as the type of man that can handle humiliation well?’

I breathe out deeply.

‘Zara I am sorry to say this but you are on your own. It’s you and your baby against the whole world. Whatever Zac is doing doesn’t make sense, he has had your back no matter what. Are you sure he is okay? He is not being threatened or something?’

‘Leo I don’t want to think about it.’

‘Has be been to a doctor? A therapist maybe? Is he regretting all this or it’s an issue of multiple personalities?’

‘Leo come on this is not some American movie.’

‘Mental health issues are real, your brother has gone to hell and back for you. What makes you think that he doesn’t have demons that he is continually fighting? This could be it, and the information placed in the wrong hands could destroy you both.’

‘What are you saying?’

‘Don’t give up on him, on everyone else yes but not your brother. Get to the bottom of this then make your judgement.’

‘Okay.’

‘For all the times he hurt people thinking he was protecting you, for all those times Zara. Give him a chance. Even if it’s to hurt you, just give him another chance.’
