Vampire Shadows -
Chapter 55
I don't know what got into me and why I decided to follow Nick on his hunt for Kara. I just couldn't help it, I really need to see my sister, it's been so long since we last met. I want to see how she feels after betraying me, after choosing some worthless jewel over me. I'm glad that she has finally proven that she isn't the goody two shoes she has always claimed to be, I'm also grateful mom isn't here to see what her favorite daughter's true colors are.
“Let's go” Nick mumbled.
“Now?" I asked raising a brow. It's been hours since we talked about leaving, but I didn't think we were going to leave so quickly. He asked me to wait in his office while he handled some things, and I wasn't even given the time to pack.
"Look Kendra, if you aren't ready for this, you can stay behind, I didn't intend for anyone to tag along in the first place," he said walking toward the room's exit.
“I am ready. I just need a few seconds to pack“ I said, choosing my words carefully. The last thing I want is to provoke this demon prince.
“Pack what?“ He asked.
“Clothes?“
"Oh my god Kendra, we aren't going on a vacation or something. This is a serious issue and I'm sure won't stay long" he said walking out and I followed suit.
“So, I can go in what I'm wearing?“ I asked looking at the big hoodie and jeans I had on. It's not my type of clothing but ever since I came to this place, things haven't been the same.
"Are we going for a fashion show?" he asked not sparing me a glance. “You look beautiful, there's no need to change” he added, this time turning a bit.
“That's not what I meant” I started.
“Kendra, you talk too much. Kind of makes me want to reconsider taking you along” he said blankly.
"I'm sorry" I apologized. It still surprises me how quickly I learned to say sorry, but what can I do, living with a man like Nicholas, it's something I have to get used to.
I could just turn back and decide not to follow him, choose to stay back, and ask him to let me meet Kara once he replaces her. But who am I kidding, I don't want to go on this trip just to meet my sister, I kinda want it so that I can spend time with Nick. Call me crazy or whatever, but I can't deny I enjoy his company. He's annoying and lacks emotions but it's better than staying here, with Zaid always so busy and no one else actually like me, Nick is my best option.
“So, where do we start the search?“ I asked when it was getting a bit too quiet. We were headed toward the castle's main exit.
"Hmmm, that, I do not know" Nick replied, his hands on his chin. With the way he looking, I'm sure the thought hasn't crossed his mind.
“How about we start from my house?" I suggested. I know she isn't there, but that doesn't mean she hasn't been there, and we might replace something that will help us replace her.
"You think that's a good place to start?" He asked, turning to face me.
"It's the best option we have” I shrugged.
"Fine" he murmured.
"Come here," he said stretching his arms.
I moved closer and he wrapped his arms around my waist.
"Hold on tight," he said before teleporting.
The next thing I saw was myself in front of our house. I know I was here recently but I still had that weird feeling in my chest, as if it was being squeezed.
"Let's check it out," Nick said, walking towards the entrance. I followed him quietly.
“I think we should check my mom's room first, then my Kara's. If she was here she must have been in those two places” I suggested.
“Hmmm” was all he said.
I led the way up the stairs and to mom's room.
.
"I don't think we are getting anywhere with this" Nick said, looking at the room weirdly. There's something about the way he has been behaving since we got here. He isn't acting all keen and desperate about replaceing kara anymore. Rather, he was having this look of discomfort and restlessness. I wonder why though.
"Why don't we check your sister's room now," he said when he noticed that I was staring at him a bit longer than normal.
There was nothing special to see here. Everything looked normal. Except for the messy bed in front of me of course. Kara isn't the type that leaves her room let alone, bed untidy. She's the perfect little perfectionist.
I remember clearly that her bed was tidy even on the day mom was killed.
But then how come it's the total opposite right now? That means…
“Kara was here!“ I said, my eyes widening.
“What?“ He asked looking interested In what I had to say.
"Yes! This bed! She must have laid on it, Nick!" I said this time half yelling.
"And look," I said, pointing to the bedspread on the couch.
"She was not alone," I said staring.
"The soldiers that betrayed me!" Nick said realizing what I was saying.
"But what were they doing here?" He asked running his hands through his thick black hair.
"Maybe they were looking for a hiding spot. Or perhaps it had something to do with the stone" I said, not sure of what I was saying.
“Your highness!“ A voice said from behind, frightening me.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to startle you," the unfamiliar guy said, raising a hand.
"It's okay," I said, still a bit surprised. I thought Nick said he was going to handle this mission on his own. I knew he'd need his men at some point, but I never thought it'll be this quick.
"You called for me," he said bowing I'm front of Nick.
"I kept you in charge of keeping an eye on this house. How did that girl sneak in and out without your knowledge" Nick said, His face looking as blank as ever.
"Your Highness, I kept a trusted maid of theirs to inform me of any activity" he was trying his best to sound bold but it was obvious that he was shaking in fear.
"So, you gave your assignment to a human" Nick said, his voice still calm, but not the type of nice calm, no the one sends shivers down one's spine.
"No, yo_ _ur Highness. I thought it'll be a better idea to keep someone whom they trusted in here to keep an eye on her." He stammered.
“And how did that work out?“ Nick questioned.
“A few days later, I came to check on her but she was nowhere to be found," the man said.
"You know the punishment for failing me, don't you? " Nick asked. The man instantly lay on the floor, touching his feet and begging for mercy.
"Miss, please talk to him," the man said to me after realizing that begging Nicholas was useless.
“Me_ ?“ I asked, baffled at his request, I wonder what made him think that Nick will ever listen to me.
The man started weeping he must have lost all hope with the way I reacted. It was sad and I felt pity on him.
“Nick, please…” I said, nervously stretching my hand to hold his.
He didn't push my hands away at least. But his dead unforgiving look was still there as fresh as ever.
“I have an idea” I added, praying he would give me a chance.
He didn't say a word but shook his head. wanting me to go ahead.
"What is the name of the maid you gave the job?" I asked. If this plan was all this Guy's life had, I needed to make it perfect.
"Tracy Ma'am. Tracy" he said. Wow, so it's Tracy, she is mine and Kara's personal maid. I wonder how she ended up getting herself stuck in this fix.
“Hmmm, go and replace Tracy, we would threaten and use her to get to Kara. If she escaped from here, that means she has done it with Kara's help, and that also means she might be able to lead us to where Kara is” I said. I know it's not a superb plan but I hope it is good enough to save his life.
“If you mess this up….“ was all Nick said before the man hurriedly left the room, promising he would replace Tracy.
"I hope he replaces her," I said, barely audible.
“So, now what? We know Kara was here but don't know where she went from here. Tracy might be our only chance” I said looking around the room.
"I can't waste my time waiting for that" Nick said. He put his hands in his pocket and brought out a phone. Then dialed a number.
This is the first time I'm seeing Nick or any vamp at all using a phone. they can communicate telepathically, so what's the point?
"Your highness," the voice on the other hand said immediately after picking. I didn't need anyone to tell me that it was Dimitri.
“Send spike” was Nick's short and demanding sentence.
“But your highn….“ Dimitri started but was interrupted by Nick's terrifying voice.
“Now!“
"Yes, your highness," he said before hanging up.
“Who's spike?“ I asked although I didn't think it would be right, nick seemed to be in a bad mood.
"You'll see," he said, his eyes focused on Kara's wall.
"We haven't checked your room," Nick said turning his attention to me.
“For what? There's nothing there. She wouldn't have been there” I said.
"Just for fun," Nick said walking across the room.
Fun?
Nick?
.
"Ta-da" I said wiggling my hands in the air nervously. I don't know why, but having Nick in my bedroom feels a bit weird and awkward. It was fine when we were at mom's and Kara's.
“Not bad," Nick said, his eyes darting from one place to another. My room isn't the perfect girly one like Kara's. But then, I'm not the perfect girly type either.
Just normal dull colors and a few paintings on the wall. My room has always been my comfort zone. The only place that actually feels like home.
Nick moved to where my bed is and sank in. I've seen him Laying on a bed before, but something about him being on my bed made me feel, weird, not the bad kind of weird but a different one. something I can't explain.
"Your highness," Dimitri said, standing at the door. He was holding a really big cage in his hands, if he didn't have phenomenal powers, he wouldn't have been able to carry something that big.
It was covered with a black curtain-like cloth, making me curious about what might be inside.
He dropped the cage slowly to the ground, and I can swear it was almost my height.
"Open it," Nick said. Dimitri did as he was told. The first instinct I had was to scream. What the fuck was that. It was the biggest and scariest bat I have ever seen. I mean, how the fuck can a bat be taller and thicker than us. It's creepy.
"You may leave," Nick said and Dimitri immediately disappeared.
"Kendra, meet spike," He said with a smile on his face. He didn't seem to notice how freaked out I felt right now.
I thought spike was a normal vampire who'd help us replace Kara.
"He's going to help us replace Kara," nick said.
“How?" I asked.
"He's not a normal bat Kendra, he's the only one of his kind and can teleport us to where Kara is” he replied.
“Seriously? You had him the whole time? We would have gotten kara a long time ago” I fumed.
“Chill, he only helps if he feels like it”
