Chapter Sixteen

Suddenly, a multitude of sirens blared to life. The bushed seemed to come to life, as soldiers in camo nets jumped out. Lance didn’t even have time to scream before the entry was blocked off and he was taken away. I hated Lance right now, but I couldn’t let his death be on my consciousness. Firing an energy pulse at the assailants, I sailed away on seemingly winged feet as Time Lapse engaged. I only caught a glimpse of him running away as I was covered.

Get to the plane! I urged him. Don’t wait- we might not be coming, or- you know what, we’ll extract ourselves. Now GET OUR OF MY SIGHT!

He ran. Meanwhile, I turned my attention back to my assailants. Grunting, I engaged my energy cannon, almost forgetting that it was on explosive… I fired. At the last moment, I changed the energy level to stun. The energy left my arm in a loud blast, and the impact swept the soldiers off their feet. It seemed as if… an explosive stun? However, I didn’t want to risk killing anyone again. Firmly keeping the setting on stun, I attempted to fight my way out of the situation…Kira, can you hear me? I shouted over the communication device.

Loud and *crackle* clear, I heard back. However, there was a large amount of static. Maybe Kira’s charge was interfering with the communications…

However, although I did see arcs of electricity now and then, eventually the two of us were swept away from each other by the never-ending tide of soldiers. The Amalgamation did not capture that many… but how he had obtained such a large military force was the least of my concerns… The fight wore on and on, and eventually I lost sight of Kira eventually. There was no answer from Lance. Apparently, it didn’t work across distances. Hopefully he had remembered to take the car instead of walking out to the plane… Soon enough, it became apparent that this was hopeless. There simply was no end. Although the bodies eventually began to encumber movement, the soldiers kept pouring out. It was time to evacuate. Although I had little energy left, I had enough to hover over the heads of the assailants. Trying to locate Kira, I soon noticed her lying on the ground. Suddenly, she stood up, and again exploded into energy before collapsing back. The attackers were obviously scared to come closer, since no one wanted to be caught in an explosion.

I nabbed her off the ground, triggering another explosion. However, this did nothing except for bolster whatever energy I lad left, and therefore giving me the strength to carry both of us out. However, there was nowhere to go. The Amalgamation would be scouring the streets for any trace of us- we had to leave. Unfortunately, two people would be much too suspicious. “we have to split up,” I stated. “I don’t know how or when we’ll meet, but they’ll catch us if we don’t. I’ll drop you off somewhere and hide somewhere myself. That way, even the Amalgamation’s surveillance network won’t have a chance.”

“Why?” Kira rasped. “Those aren’t really plausible. The Amalgamation could still not replace us…”

“Because I’ll be dropping you off at the airport. You need to replace you parents- they barely know me. I’m sure after you reveal your manipulation, they’ll give answers. Also help.” Why, oh why, was I following what characters did in books? I used to think that what characters did could be forced and cheesy, but now it seemed like the logical thing to do. “And I…” I trailed off. “Maybe my past will have something.”

“What about Lance?” Kira questioned. At least she had agreed with me about the splitting up.

“I don’t care about him anymore. Let him do whatever he wants.” I responded. I was done with him.

Engaging Time Lapse, the enemies had no chance. Unfortunately for them, I was too fast. This almost seemed too easy… but I wasn’t about to look a gift horse in the mouth. Kira was dropped off at the airport with a set of false documents, courtesy of A.V.A. And I set off, into the unknowns, looking for a lead on my past…

The Amalgamation laughed. And kept laughing. They were all split up now, they were indeed. And everyone knew there was strength in numbers… except perhaps them. And now, this mistake, this simple argument, would be their demise. And its joy.
