Chapter Eighteen- Lance
Although this was to be expected, I had not landed that far away from home. ‘Far away’ being a relative term, of course. A couple hundred miles. Using my false documentation to acquire a place to stay for the time being, I wondered what to do. Returning was not exactly an option- there was no way I, a mere mortal, would be able to traverse the distance back home in a short amount of time. This was not a large town- it would be much too suspicious if a taxi were to arrive here and take me home. And it’s not like Eva and Kira even stayed- they were probably miles away, searching for the Amalgamation. Yes, the choice was becoming clearer now- we would remain split up. I tried contacting the two using A.V.A’s device, but it didn’t seem to work. Logging on to the Internet (I had brought my laptop with me) I started my search. I felt like I always hadn’t been pulling my weight, and now this feeling was multiplied. Eva was the one who was always offering me and Kira help with homework, and Kira with any technological trouble. And I… If I said this to them, my friends would deny it, naturally. They would say I was the soul, the sense of humor… but it never felt like enough. Now, that Eva and Kira literally had powers, I felt behind. What could I do? Shoot one guard in the throat with a tranquilizer before Eva dispatched the rest? No. It could not stay this way- I demanded change.
Of course, you couldn’t just google “how to get superpowers ASAP’ and get something real. Maybe I was destined to be mortal, I didn’t know. But I tried every covert method to replace this information, but in this case the Internet was not my friend. Being the powerless one of the team was not an option. We had a tech expert- Kira, and a person who knew martial arts- Eva, although a normal shouldn’t be able to learn that fast. Was I destined to be the third wheel? I didn’t know. It was already late, and I went to sleep restless, wondering how I would replace my friends again when the time came.
As sleep washed over me, I pondered what I would do throughout the night. I had always been able to control my dreams, but sometimes this led to boredom, since I didn’t always have the imagination to conjure an interesting nighttime delusion. However, this night was somewhat different. As I dreamed about a world where I was not normal, I had a feeling that I was being watched. And no matter how I manipulated my fantasies, it never went away. As I woke up, I had only a vague sense of the night before, another strange thing. However, two things resonated in my head- a sense of both puzzlement and approval, and a feeling that I needed to track down the Amalgamation, even if I needed to do it alone. And although this reasoning may have come from a dream, it was exactly what I now intended to do.
