Chapter 36
Lila’s voice rang out before she even showed up. Lucille turned to look behind her and saw an elegant woman in a vintage dress. Beside her was a middle–aged man in a suit.
Lila looked youthful despite her age–her skin was smooth and supple, and she looked graceful and poised.
Meanwhile, Eric was tall, stately, and gentlemanly. Lucille could see traces of him in Spencer, especially in his eyes. The father and son looked quite similar to each other.
Despite being middle–aged, it was easy to tell Eric had been handsome as a young man. It looked like Lila’s and Eric’s genes had combined in the best way possible to give birth to someone as gorgeous as Spencer.
There was no doubt in Lucille’s mind that these were Spencer’s parents. Spencer confirmed her guess by greeting, “Mom, Dad.”
Before Lucille could say anything, Lila gave Spencer the stink–eye and said, “Don’t tell me you’ve forgotten about your mother now that you’re married, you brat.
“I had you in my belly for months and worked hard to raise you. Don’t I even have the right to eat one of your homecooked meals?” She stood before them and reprimanded Spencer.
Lucille felt a little awkward. The relationship between a mother–in–law and her daughter–in–law had always been a sensitive subject; it was also one of the biggest troubles one could have in life.
Lila’s personality seemed quite sharp and harsh…
Spencer’s eyes were filled with resignation. He said stoically, “Tell your husband to cook for you if you want a homecooked meal.”
Eric couldn’t help feeling wronged. He didn’t know how to cook!
Lila said huffily, “I’m your mother, you brat!”
“So?” Spencer retorted. It was evident that to him, Lucille was more important than anyone else.
Lila was rendered speechless. The Layton men were known for doting on their wives–back in the day, Eric had treated her like a princess. Of course, he still did to this day.
Spencer had inherited everything his father had excelled at. In fact, it looked like he’d surpassed Eric.
Lucille didn’t know how to join the conversation. She tugged lightly on Spencer’s hand, indicating that he should stop talking.
Lila turned to Eric and said, “I’ve been married to you for 29 years, yet you’ve never cooked me a meal beforel
He could feel a headache coming on. Suddenly, an idea occurred to him, and he wrapped an arm around Lita’s shoulders. He said dotingly, “Alright, alright. I’ll go learn how to cook and make you a meal, okay? You can have as much as you like as long as you have the nerve to eat it.”
This appeased Lila. Lucilla couldn’t help feeling surprised by how things had played out. So… Spencer’s gentleness had also been inherited?

And it turned out that no one in the Layton family knew that he could cook. If she’d known, she wouldn’t have said anything. Look at the trouble it had caused!
She was thinking of a way to ease the awkwardness when Lila grabbed her free hand and said gently, “I didn’t scare you, did I?”
Lucille blinked and shook her head. “No, Mrs. Layton.”
Lila immediately said, “You can’t call me that. Call me ‘Mom.”
After a brief pause, Lucille said, “Mom.”
She hadn’t uttered the word in years and couldn’t help having mixed feelings about it.
Lila said happily, “There we go. Now, I want you to know that I’m not a nasty mother–in–law. I just thought that this punk was heartless for not repaying me when I brought him into this world and raised him.” She glared at Spencer. When she turned back to Lucille, her gaze was gentle again. “I’m not picking on you, okay? Make sure you have this punk cook for you every day. It’s the only thing he’s good for.”
Lucille was surprised by the sudden change in Lila’s attitude. It turned out she’d been overthinking earlier. Spencer listened stoically, looking like he had nothing to do with whatever Lila was saying. Lucille took the opportunity to give James, Eric, and Lila the gifts Spencer had prepared.
