Fortunately, the car’s specifications were the best available, so Lucille only jolted forward slightly.

Spencer was so stunned that he just allowed the car to stop in the middle of the road. Earlier, Lucille had said, “Mom showed me photos of you as a kid, and you were naked. Like, butt–naked. You didn’t have anything on at all.”

That was why he’d slammed the brakes.

“You were completely naked, you know. I didn’t expect you to be so cute when you were a kid.” Lucille watched him as he sat there, unmoving. She smiled faintly, and her tone sounded light–hearted and a little mischievous.

Just then, Spencer asked, “Is that so?” He dragged his words out as his eyes glinted slyly.

Lucille didn’t notice it and said, “Yeah. You were so chubby, too.”

Spencer never would’ve expected his cold and aloof image to be ruined by a baby photo. To make

matters worse, Lucille had seen it.

Suddenly, he turned to her with a raised eyebrow. “I suppose that makes us even.”

Lucille was confused. What was he talking about? He continued, “Didn’t you go through the rest of the photo album?”

“I did.”

“And what did you see?”

She said a little nervously, “Mom said that you’ve liked me since you were a child.”

He looked into her eyes and said, “Yep.”

Lucille was surprised to hear him admit it so easily, but she also felt like her heart had been dunked in

honey.

She didn’t know what was wrong with her. Maybe it was because Spencer had admitted to liking her since

he had been a child.

“But why? You were only four or five years old at the time. What could you have known about having feelings for someone?” she asked.

“Because you were adorable,” he said.

He didn’t actually know the answer to that. All he knew was that he hadn’t been disdainful of her when he’d seen her for the first timeshe’d been a wrinkled newborn.

Later, she’d become increasingly adorable and had giggled whenever she’d seen him. It had made him happy.

Lucille said, “Mom also said that you cried in your room every night after learning that my mother arranged the engagement with the Quall family. She said you kept throwing tantrums and went on hunger strikes.”

Spencer fell silent. Had Lila told her all of that? She hadn’t bothered keeping any of his secrets, huh?

Lucille continued seriously, “And so, that means your feelings for me aren’t something that just developed overnight. Right?

Spencer had always known that she was insecure. She’d matured after growing up, but she’d also lost too much. It had only made her more sensitive than ever.

She was like a crab–her iciness and independence were her pincers and weapons to protect herself.

He looked at her tenderly before caressing her head. Then, he smiled and said, “You’re right. It’s not something that developed overnight. I’ve planned this for a long time.”

Lucille was taken aback by this. Hearing Spencer say such things aloud made her nose prickle and her throat clench a little. Suddenly, she thought of something. “What if I’d ended up marrying Harold?”

Spencer said he’d planned this for a long time, but he hadn’t shown up throughout her life. She’d forgotten all about him. What if something had gone wrong?

He said confidently, “You wouldn’t have married him. Even if you’d agreed to marry him, I wouldn’t have allowed it to happen.

“I would’ve crashed your wedding and taken you away! Do you think anyone would dare fight me for you?”

Lucille fell silent. His words made so much sense. No one in Summeria would dare fight him for anything, nor could anyone compare to him.

She’d always thought Spencer’s interest in her was fleeting, but now that they’d laid their cards on the table, she felt like she could be much more open with him.

“Running into you at the lake near the hospital was an accident, but I recognized you at first sight. Later,/ the blind date that Grandpa set us up on made me realize that I couldn’t wait anymore,” Spencer explained.

Their reunion had indeed been an accident. He’d just returned from a business trip at the time and had been at the hospital to visit James, who’d been pretending to be sick. Fortunately, these coincidences had made him make a move quickly.

“I didn’t expect you to be so scheming,” Lucille said.

“Only when it comes to you.”

It was such a normal sentence, but Spencer made it sound extraordinary. There was something about it that sounded enchanting; it made Lucille’s heart race.

Suddenly, he leaned close to her and whispered something into her ear. Her eyes widened at his words.
