Chapter 46 Everyone Gets Lonely Sometimes

Sierra froze in embarrassment. She couldn't conceal her feelings or her rage. Her eyes darted back and forth, unsure of what to do next.

A few seconds later, Sierra turned to look at Lewis. Her heart sank when she saw the indifference in his eyes. Deep down, she knew. He wasn't in a good mood today.

Sierra had known Lewis for such a long time, so she could read him like a book. She may not have known everything about him, but she was very familiar with his behavior. She knew that if she ended things in a fit of anger now, it was very likely that Lewis wouldn't even bat an eye. After a beat, Sierra tossed the knife onto the table and then threw herself into Lewis' arms.

"I've been anticipating this birthday for an entire year! Don't you know how upset I got when you sent Conrad to attend in your stead?" Sierra whined.

She knew the only person that Lewis would put before herself was Josephine!

Sierra also knew what words she should say and what manner she should behave in that would melt his heart. The expression on Lewis' face softened, and he squeezed her waist gently. "I'll make it up to you another day."

She looked up at his handsome face and pouted cutely as she asked, "You promise?"

"Yeah."

"You're not allowed to stand me up again, got it?"

"Alright. How's your injury?" Lewis asked as he glanced at her foot.

"Mm, it's healed up quite a bit. But it still hurts a little when I walk."

Sierra hooked her arms around his neck and asked coquettishly, "Won't you carry me over there?"

Lewis didn't refuse. He scooped her up in his arms and walked over to the living room. Sierra pouted and said, "I haven't eaten yet. Won't you stay and keep me company?"

Lewis glanced at her and hummed in reply.

Mrs. Wolsey cleared the table and decorated it with candles before serving their meals.

The weather turned colder, and it rained consecutively for a few days.

Josephine, who had been caught in the rain, developed a cold. She slept in her bed. with a burning fever for days. She barely knew how much time had passed. Amidst the haze of her fever dreams, she seemed to have been forgotten.

The only good thing about her situation was that it was better for her to be in a delirious haze than it was for her to be sober. Josephine knew her body was strong enough, so she didn't bothered to take any medicine or get any injections. She tossed and turned on the bed for three nights, and her fever subsided eventually.

Lewis probably wanted to keep his promise to Sierra not to see her for a month, so Josephine hadn't seen him since he left that night.

She crawled out of bed, took a shower, and then got dressed before leaving the Styx mansion with an umbrella. Avery had returned the money that she borrowed, so Josephine used that money to buy a number of things. She also bought a phone with it.

She brought everything and went to pay Mrs. Jinkins a visit.

It was raining today, so Mrs. Jinkins holed herself up in her rickety shack instead of collecting trash to be recycled. Even as Josephine stood outside the door, she could hear Mrs. Jinkins coughing badly. Josephine quickly walked over to the door and knocked. Mrs. Jinkins peeked

through the curtains to see who it was. Her bleary eyes lit up in joy when she saw that it was Josephine.

"What brings you here, Josie?" Mrs. Jinkins said as she got out of bed.

Josephine looked around the cramped shed. There wasn't a table she could use to place the things that she brought, so she simply placed them at the foot of the bed before taking a seat next to Mrs. Jinkins. "You don't look too good. Have you fallen ill?" Mrs. Jinkins asked.

Josephine simply smiled and shook her head before pressing the phone she had just bought into Mrs. Jinkins' hands.

She signed to Mrs. Jinkins, "I've saved my number on this phone, so just give me a call if you need me."

"I can't accept this, Josie. This gift is simply too expensive. Moreover, I'm just a little old lady-I don't need a phone."

Josephine signed, "This is a second-hand phone, and it doesn't cost a lot. Please,

take it. It'll be more convenient for you in the future."

She insistently pressed the phone Into Mrs. Jinkins' hands. Mrs. Jinkins couldn't refuse, so she accepted the gift. Tears welled up in Mrs. Jinkins' eyes. "I have never imagined that it would be you who stayed by my side in the end."

Josephine was also moved to tears, so she held Mrs. Jinkins' hand tightly. They were both in a miserable plight and consoled each other. She too had never expected that she would be sitting next to an elderly person when she had nobody to rely on by her

side.

Though there was a large age gap between them, they shared the same loneliness. It was inevitable that everyone would feel lonely sometimes.

Josephine looked around the shed. Although there was a waterproof tarp around the building, it still allowed moisture to seep into the house. The bedding and sheets felt slightly damp.

It was difficult to imagine that an elderly lady like Mrs. Jinkins had been living here for all this time. Josephine got up and bid farewell to Mrs. Jinkins. She hailed a cab from the sidewalk.

After she got into the car, Josephine typed out a text message before sending it to Lewis. Then she gave him a call.

Lewis was in a meeting when Josephine called. Immediately, he raised his hand as a signal for the speaker to pause. He quickly declined the call and opened Whatsapp to see what she had sent him. Josephine had asked to take Mrs. Jinkins back. Lewis stared at the message in silence. It was the first time that Josephine had asked him for something in all these

years.

As a result, Lewis didn't turn her down. He texted back, "Do as you wish."

Josephine was very surprised to receive the text from Lewis. She hadn't expected him to reply so quickly, much less agree with her. However, Lewis wouldn't hire a person for free. Mrs. Jinkins would have to work hard as a servant to earn her keep. In any case, it didn't matter to Lewis because he wouldn't be returning to their house.

When she thought of that, Josephine patted the driver and showed him her phone. He nodded in understanding before turning the car around and heading back to Mrs. Jinkins' house.

Gleefully, Josephine ran over to Mrs. Jinkins and signed, "Mrs. Jinkins, Lewis has agreed to take you back."

Mrs. Jinkins was pleasantly surprised. Although she had only met Josephine twice,

this was the first time that she had seen her so elated.

"T-That sounds too good to be true!" Mrs. Jinkins said hesitantly.

Josephine signed, "You won't be returning to the main mansion. You'll be coming with me to Styx Mansion, the place where... Lewis and I are staying."

Mrs. Jinkins asked in surprise, "Your...?"

Josephine nodded and signed, "We're married now."

Mrs. Jinkins smiled in relief and said, "I just knew it! Everyone could tell that he treated you differently ever since you were both kids. It seems like he was doing that because he liked you." Josephine's smile faded a little, but she kept it plastered on her face. He liked her, sure. He liked her the same way he would like a pet. If Josephine visited Mrs. Jinkins, it was only natural that the elderly woman would be fond of her.

And as long as she played her part and modeled for Avery, then Avery would also be fond of her.

A person could like many people, but love? They could only love one person.

Mrs. Jinkins could see the pain on Josephine's face, so she changed the topic and said, "But Josie, I'm very old. I wouldn't want to bother you guys."

Josephine waved her hands and signed, "Lewis also hopes for your return. He says he'll be under your care."

Mrs. Jinkins was surprised and asked, "R-Really?"

Her legs were bad, but she could still do the housework. She hadn't expected that Lewis would still want her to care for him. It reminded her of her own son, and she began to tear up.

Josephine nodded. She may have lied to both parties, but she could see the tears of happiness in Mrs. Jinkins' eyes.

It was well worth it. After all, a person would only have a meaningful life if they felt they were needed.
