Chapter 71 A Freak

Conrad was standing next to Lewis. He glanced at Lewis with trepidation, but there were no emotions on Lewis's face. He could only feel the surrounding temperature drop. Conrad was about to say something when Lewis turned around and left, so he could only

follow suit.

Under Seth's guidance, Josephine learned how to use the copy machine. She turned to him and signed. "Thank you. I know how to use it now."

Seth smiled and nodded. "Okay, then I'll be on my way."

Josephine nodded and saw him leave.

Many in the office noticed their interactions. Hilary initially thought of rushing her for the copies when she stumbled upon this scene. She furrowed her brows in confusion.

Although Seth was an easygoing person at the office, he would never waste his time on such small matters, let alone teach new hires how to use the copy machine. Could they be having an affair?

Hilary gave it a thought before taking her phone out to text Daphne Alvarez. Daphne cared so much for Seth. Naturally, she would worry that the other ladies at the office would flock to him. That was why she had quite a few spies in the office and Hilary was one of them.

When Daphne received the text, she almost snapped her phone in her fury.

"That trampy bitch!" Daphne cursed. Nancy glanced at her strangely and asked, "What is it? Why are you so angry?"

"It's that stupid mute bitch! What was Lewis thinking by taking her to the office to work? She's disabled! What can she do other than seduce other men!"

It was only the two of them at home, so Daphne had no inhibitions in saying whatever was on

her mind.

"What?" Nancy was a little baffled. "Lewis took her to the office?"

This was the matter that Nancy cared about most. To her, Josephine was always the black sheep of the family. It was embarrassing enough that she was her daughter-in-law, but Lewis had brought her to the office to further humiliate the family even more.

"Yes, Mom. That bitch can't keep it in her pants. How dare she try to seduce Seth in broad. daylight! Mom, what should I do?"

Nancy glared at Daphne, annoyed. "Stop being paranoid. They are at work. Even if Josephine wanted to do anything, Seth wouldn't let it happen. Stop listening to nonsensical office gossip. It'll only make you look overly suspicious."

"But-"Daphne thought about what she had heard. She could not stop herself from being suspicious of them. How was she going to explain this to her mother?

"Enough. I don't think Seth is that sort of person. You, on the other hand, should stop spending your whole day wondering what they're doing. Think about yourself. What does she have that you don't? She can't even speak. Why would Seth be attracted to her?"

Hearing what her mother had said, Daphne felt a little better, but only by a bit. She was still worried. A woman's intuition was extremely accurate when it came to relationships.

How Seth treated Josephine was not as simple as it seemed. A very long time ago, the first time Seth visited the Alvarez family, Daphne had already noticed something in him when he noticed how disappointed Josephine looked then.

"Mom, I don't want to see that mute bitch anymore," Daphne muttered in a daze, thinking about all the incidents that had happened in the past.

Nancy was a little stunned. "What did you say?"

Daphne immediately came to her senses and quickly collected herself, hiding the grimace on her face. "I-It's nothing. I was just joking."

Nancy looked at Daphne closely, clearly not believing her.

Josephine's existence was indeed a sore sight. Even if she was not in the Alvarez family, her existence alone irked them. However, she was under Lewis's protection, so they did not dare to do anything reckless. This was because they did not know how Lewis felt about her.

"Daphne, what are you truly worried about? Are you hiding something from me?"

Daphne looked up at Nancy. Her mouth fell open in hesitation, before saying, "Mom, I'm not hiding anything. It's just a hunch. I don't know if you can sense it or not."

"What is it?"

O

"It feels like Seth doesn't like me. He isn't interested in the family's company either. I don't

know. I don't know what he wants."

Nancy furrowed her brows and asked, puzzled, "What are you talking about? Doesn't he treat you well? If he doesn't like you, why did he marry you and have children with you? Daphne, why don't we pay the doctor a visit?"

Nancy suspected that Daphne had postpartum depression.

Daphne was a little exasperated. "Mom, don't you believe me? I know it looks like when he likes something and when he doesn't. You can pretend to like someone."

Nancy was silent. She did not know whether to believe Daphne or not. Hearing what Daphne said, she also started to feel that something was off.

Seth said that he had been an orphan since he was young and he grew up in an orphanage, but the way he held himself was not akin to someone who grew up in an orphanage.

Furthermore, they did a background check on him. Seth had indeed grown up in an orphanage. Everyone in the orphanage knew who he was.

That was why everything felt contradictory.

"Alright, stop thinking about this. If something were to happen between them, it would have happened a long time ago. Why would they wait until now? I think you've just been too cooped. up at home and are becoming paranoid. Why don't you head out and work?"

Daphne lowered her gaze, saying nothing else.

Josephine handed her copies to Hilary. Hilary took one look at her before saying, "Take them to the meeting room."

Josephine held onto the copies and stood in the same spot.

Hilary was a little irritated. She glared at Josephine. "What are you standing there for? Go! If you don't want to work, why are you here?"

Someone told Hilary a moment ago that President Alvarez looked like he was in a bad mood. Hilary did not want to get in trouble.

Josephine was silent for a while before taking a pen and a piece of paper from the desk. She wrote, "Where is the meeting room?" Hilary was stunned. She looked at the note and then back at Josephine in disbelief.

"Are you mute?"

Josephine pursed her lips and nodded.

Hilary was shocked. The other colleagues in the office looked at Josephine in shock. The strange look that they cast Josephine felt like prickling needles on her skin.

She felt like she had been lynched, and her wounds were exposed under the scorching sun.

Every gaze on her told her that she was not a normal person. She was a freak to be viewed like the animals in a zoo.

"Turn left and head straight to the end of the corridor. The meeting room is by the corner," someone gently instructed.

Josephine looked at that person gratefully before picking up her copies and fleeing the office. When she left, she could still hear the discussions behind her. "Why would the office hire a mute? How did she get the job?"

"It's quite self-explanatory. Must be through the back door. I saw how close she was to Mr. Fairchild. Could it be..."

"That's interesting. Is Mr. Fairchild following the footsteps of our President Alvarez?"

"Shh, be quiet. Mr. Fairchild is not like President Alvarez. He has a wife and he married up. I don't think he would dare do such a thing, would he?"

Josephine smiled and no longer wished to hear what they were saying. She left with her

documents.

Everyone knew that Seth had a wife, yet they did not know that Lewis had a wife too.

Sure enough, she was a humiliation to everyone. Did Lewis make her work so she would hear such cruel words about herself?
