Alaric's words were laced with anger, sending Ethan into a shiver. Could it be that the new girl had some sort of hidden background? "What's going on here, Alaric?" Evelina approached at that moment.

Alaric, fuming, pointed at the sleazy guy, "This jerk actually dared to start a fight in the office. Just fire him."

Ethan panicked, saying, "It wasn't my fault, alright? The new girl threw the first punch. I was just defending myself."

Evelina, pretending to be a fake angel, said, "But she's a girl. You can't just retaliate like that."

Ethan didn't dare to argue back, knowing Alaric was backing the new girl. Their relationship was a mystery to him.

Evelina tugged at Alaric's sleeve, whispering, "Alaric, firing someone shouldn't be so hasty. We're in a professional setting."

Alaric's gaze shifted to Lemira, his tone stiff, "What do you think?"

Lemira looked indifferent, "Doesn't matter to me," and walked away with her purse.

Alaric was visibly upset, "What's with her attitude?"

He had just stood up for her, and that's how she repaid him? Ungrateful, indeed!

Evelina smirked inwardly. After the way Alaric had treated Lemira, only a fool would forgive him so easily. But for Evelina, this was a good thing.

Evelina, acting all generous, "She's always been like this. It's not the first time you know her. Let's talk outside."

Evelina attempted to avoid further company gossip about Lemira being Ms. Langston. That would jeopardize her own standing in the company. Since Lemira didn't want the title, Evelina would gladly take it.

The next day, Lemira noticed many colleagues looking at her differently, obviously because of yesterday's incident.

But today, after she finished testing the software, she could take her payment and leave.

As soon as Lemira sat down, a female colleague leaned in, "So, what's the deal with you and Mr. Alaric Langston?"

"Nothing."

"I don't buy it. If there was nothing, he wouldn't have defended you like that yesterday. The team lead was almost scared to death."

Word had spread throughout the

office about the new engineer with a surprisingly mysterious background. No wonder she could get through HR's review with such a young age. It seemed likely she had a past relationship with Alaric.

Lemira kept her gaze on her computer screen, ignoring her colleague's curiosity. The latter could only give up, not probing further.

A while after, Ethan arrived at work

with less arrogance than usual, and as seeing Lemira, except a stern face, he didn't dare to have any confrontation, thinking Alaric might stand by her side if she was provoked.

The office was eerily quiet until the manager announced, "There's a meeting soon to discuss firewall issues. The big boss will be

inspecting our work. Let's figure it out"

"No need for a discussion. I've already written the patch. It's ready for testing."

Scoff was written all over the sleazy guy's face, "You expect us to believe you fixed it so quickly?"

"Just because you're incapable doesn't mean everyone else is," Lemira shot back, unfazed.

Though he's angered, he didn't dare to escalate things further, merely groaning, "Fine, go test it then. But if it fails, you're out."

Lemira copied her code onto a USB drive and headed to the server room for testing.

Evelina approached at this time, exchanging a glance with the sleazy guy as Lemira started the software test.

However, it wasn't long before an error popped up on the screen.

"See, it goes wrong. You're all talk and no skill," Ethan mocked.
