Why My Mate Cries
Chapter 44

REID’S POV

A surge of happiness went through me at the thought that Aliyah wanted us to have a child, too. My happiness was so strong I could hardly breathe around it. I have been meaning to have a family I could call my own. My life had never been the same again when my parents died. Before I even realized it, I just found myself dreaming of having a wife and children that I would spend my life with.

And here it was. It seemed that the Moon Goddess was shoving it in my face like she was ready to give it to me. I couldn’t be happier…

It felt like my dreams were slowly coming true.

If only Aliyah didn’t have a poor health condition, I believed I would not be this reluctant to tell her the truth, that she was pregnant and that we would become parents soon. I was concerned as to how she would react once I told her, and given her current health, I was afraid it would only overwhelm her.

I tucked her hair behind her ear as I watched her sleep peacefully. She was so beautiful, like an angel who descended from the sky, that I sometimes felt that my imagination had only made her up. Every single day when I woke up, her face was the first thing I wanted to see, and at night, it was still her innocent face that my eyes wanted to watch before I went to sleep. It became a routine to my own satisfaction, something that I would never trade for anything else.

I had trouble sleeping that night as many thoughts whirled around my head. I then decided to go down to the kitchen to drink vodka or any hard drink that would knock me out, but to my surprise, Lucas and Jane were there drinking.

They noticed my presence. Lucas seemingly freaked out, but I motioned for him to stay in his seat.

“What are you guys drinking?” I asked.

“Just some beers, Alpha,” Lucas answered. “Having trouble sleeping?”

I smirked as I walked to the mini-bar to get a bottle of vodka. “Yeah, I kind of need something that will knock me out.”

His mate, Jane, giggled. “How’s Aliyah, Alpha?”

“She’s fine, and already sleeping.” I grabbed a glass and put some ice on it. “Thank you for keeping her company, Jane.”

“Please, don’t mention it, Alpha. We decided to be friends. I had fun cooking with her.”

Lucas’s smile widened at the sound of Jane’s jolly voice. I could smell that he was deeply in love. F*****g wolf senses.

“I hope you’re not getting a culture shock here. You see, werewolves and humans do live differently,” I told Jane right before I sat down on the seat across from them.

Jane sipped on her bottle of beer and shook her head. “You can say that I am still in a daze, Alpha. I’m not really familiar with the wolf things because I only read a few bits of information about them from books, but I think I can live with it now,” she said meaningfully and gazed at Lucas.

I couldn’t help but smile. It was the same thing I felt with Aliyah. I was so damn smitten that I just found myself breaking rules, pulling some strings and living differently because I wanted her to stay by my side.

I guess every one of us could do all kinds of things for our true mate, the love of our life.

I mind linked with Lucas and told him, ‘Congratulations, you got her smitten.’

Lucas shook his head, smirking.

As the night went on, we talked about a lot of stuff. That’s when I realized that Jane, a human, was a good talker too; no wonder that Lucas did not reject her. Our casual conversation was only interrupted when we heard the loud growls of the wolves that had just entered the kitchen.

My jaw clenched, realizing that the wolves were none other than the twins, Ellie and Dustin. I finished my vodka and stood up, clicking my neck and glancing at them in annoyance.

“You two are supposed to be asleep by now,” I said in a low growl.

But the two wolves did not even flinch. Instead, they ran around the kitchen and shoved Lucas and Jane’s drinks on the table, which scared the humans in an instance. Rage boiled through me as I watched them disrespect us. I cursed under my breath, and I couldn’t stop myself from snapping out of them.

“Ellie, Dustin, stop it right now!” I yelled and swiftly followed them.

I held both of their necks using my claws and forced them to shift back to their human forms using the Alpha command power.

Dustin let out a snort. “We were just playing, Alpha.”

“Playing in the middle of the night?!” I leaned forward to meet his eyes. “When are you going to behave?!”

They both froze, and I could feel their shivers going down their spines. I growled once more, making Ellie cry loudly, but I didn’t give a damn.

“We—We are sorry, Alpha…” she said.

I breathed in heavily and shook my head. There was no way these two would ever learn their lesson just by talking to them. Thinking that they might end up causing so much stress to my pregnant mate, I have decided to not show them any mercy.

“What’s going on here?” Klaus entered the kitchen with a frown.

“These two must be punished accordingly, Klaus.” My eyes narrowed as I still looked down at them.

The twins’ faces turned pale. I kind of felt a pang of guilt but I simply ignored it as I needed to be tough in order for them to learn by hook or crook.

“What? What did they do this time?”

“Same old. They disrespected their pack mates.”

“Again?!”

I glanced at Klaus. “These two are banned from shifting.”

“W—What? Alpha, no!” Dustin protested.

“You are lucky enough that this is the only punishment I’m giving both of you,” I said wryly. “You two should not shift into your wolf form until I lift the punishment. If any of us sees you shift, you will be thrown out of the pack.”

Their mouths fell open, and seconds later, Ellie cried like a loud baby. Oh, shit. I huffed in frustration.

“Okay, I’ll walk them back to their room,” Klaus said, trying to hide the fact that he was laughing.

“Good, make sure they both sleep before you leave them.”

“I need a salary for being their nanny, Reid.” He laughed.

Sighing, I shook my head and turned to Lucas and Jane. “I’m sorry about that.”

“No problem, Alpha,” Lucas said as he soothed Jane.

“I’ll go upstairs to rest. You two should do the same.”

They both nodded. As I left, I couldn’t help but ponder whether I’d experienced the same thing from our child. I wish we could become good parents. It would only be a headache if our child grew up just like Ellie or Dustin.

When I went back to our room, I walked towards the bed and caressed Aliyah’s face. As I kissed her good night, I hoped that her pregnancy would turn out well.
