Wild at Heart -
Chapter 54
My fist connected with another Omega and I could just tell from the way these wolves fought that they were the same so-called rogues that were attacking our Omegas at the borders. There were so many of them, I was surprised the West was so willing to run into war with the South against us. What did Stefan have on their Alpha to make them have his back? The Omega recovered faster than expected and landed his own blow to my face. I stumbled backwards and caught myself on the table of desserts. I took a cupcake and shoved it into my opponent’s eyes. He floundered as he tried to see through the layers of cake and frosting. I sliced my claws over his neck, and he fell to the ground as he bled out.
At this point, the firehall was full of the three pack’s Omegas. The civilians have been safely moved to the safehouse, which was a giant relief for me. I couldn’t stand the thought of someone getting hurt all because I didn’t want to be Stefan’s mate. How childish.
Suddenly, a gust of air hit my face and I picked up on his scent. He was close. He was so close. I looked around me and saw Nick fighting off three Omegas while Daniel and Alex were busy with a small pack of their own. Jake’s arm was wounded, but he was holding his own with Alan’s help. Although every time I saw Sophia, it put a foul taste in my mouth I was still glad to see she was fighting on our side. The bodies were piling up, but it didn’t look like it was from our warriors.
Finally, the puppet-master of this war made his appearance, but not through his handmade entryway. He had to have entered from one of the side doors because he was behind me before I knew it. He wrapped an arm around my chest and pulled me back into the room Alex was getting dressed in before Stefan ruined their wedding. He tossed me inside the room and slammed the door shut. I stumbled, but I caught myself and stayed on my feet. My eyes darted across the room as I looked for an exit, but the only one in the room was also the entrance that Stefan was blocking.
“It’s nice to see you again, Emma.” Stefan said as he ran a hand through his salt and peppered hair.
“I wish I could say the same about you.” I spat back at him.
“I like the flare.” He said with a grin.
“What do you want?” I asked. “You’ve already attacked my pack, so either surrender and leave or fight and be killed.” I didn’t want to let him know that I knew why he was there because his Beta betrayed him and warned me.
“I want to give you one last chance to change your mind and come with me to the South.” He leaned against the wall, trying to be cool, like there wasn’t a war going on behind the door.
“Or what, Stefan?” I asked. “You’ll attack my pack? You’ll kill everyone I love?” The more I spoke, the less amused Stefan looked. “I would rather risk it all and watch you throw everything you have into trying to ruin my life just to see you fail.”
“Watch your tone, sweetheart.”
“No, Stefan, I don’t think I will.” I crossed my arms over my chest. “The truth is, I’m not afraid of you. You think you’re ruling a pack when really you’re just a coward who throws a tantrum like a child and hides behind violence to get his way.”
“Is that so?”
“It is.” He was trying to get me to submit to him, but I wasn’t going to.
“To not fear me, doesn’t make you brave, my dear, it makes you stupid.”
“Do you fear me, Stefan?” I asked. He looked baffled, but only laughed.
“Do I fear a little girl?” He laughed again. “Of course not.”
“Then I think the only stupid one here, is you.”
“Oh?”
“You forget who killed your idiot wolves who decided to work with Jackson.” Stefan licked his teeth, and I noticed his canines were beginning to extrude. I was pissing him off. “The red wolf who ripped your son’s heart out.” Stefan’s hand shot out and his fingers wrapped around my neck. He pushed me against the wall and held me tight. I grabbed his hand to loosen it, but he only held tighter.
“I will take you to my pack, and you’ll learn to control your tongue, or I’ll rip it out.” He pressed his thumb tighter into my neck and I was starting to feel my windpipe closing. Unexpectedly, I saw the flash of a wolf’s snout in front of my face, then Stefan and I were both thrown to the ground. I heard a loud scream come from Stefan’s mouth and pieced together what had just happened. Nick’s wolf had Stefan’s arm in his mouth, he chomped down hard and ripped his head side to side as Stefan screamed in pain. Blood splashed against the walls and I covered my face. When I didn’t feel the blood hitting my arms anymore, I moved them to see Nick dropping Stefan’s arm from his mouth while Stefan held his amputated elbow. Nick stood in front of me and lowered his head at Stefan, a loud growl escaped him and Stefan actually looking…terrified? Was the big bad wolf of the South afraid of my mate? He should be. Stefan pulled something from his pocket that Nick saw before I did. Nick’s jaw bit down on my dress and quickly dragged me away from Stefan before he threw his body on top of me. An explosion went off and I screamed as I gripped Nick’s fur. Stefan must have pulled a small grenade as a back up plan.
“Nick?” I opened my eyes and let the ringing in my ears lessen. Nick’s wolf leaned his forehead in between my breasts and purred into my dress. Thank the Moon Goddess we’re both okay. Nick lifted his head again and nodded it towards the door. I looked over and saw that the door was wide open, and Stefan was nowhere to be seen, besides his arm that was now on fire. He must have made a run for it. Nick got off me and I stood up. “He abandoned his pack?” I asked as I saw that our pack was still fighting off theirs and the West’s Omegas. Nick nodded and we both exited the room to get back to the fight. They would need us.
A scent caught my nose and I had to admit, I was a little surprised. I turned to look out the Stefan-bomb-made-window and saw a pack of wolves descending. The mocha chocolate twin wolves followed a large duty gray wolf beside an off-black one. Reginald was holding up his end of the bargain by leading his pack into war for us. His beta and daughters right behind him. I couldn’t help but think Kendrick, Ophelia and Octavia were following his lead because of Nick and I and not because of their Alpha.
The wolves dove straight into attack mode like the predators we were inside. Stefan left his pack behind and they were already losing the fight without the East Pack helping us. Would the West continue this fight and lose more of their own? Or would they be smart and retreat like Stefan had? I hadn’t been a Luna long, but I would never abandon my pack, especially in the middle of a war. But I guess that’s just another reason why Stefan is a shitty Alpha. I wasn’t leaving this fight until every last one of his followers were dead.
