Chapter 845 I Was Looking at Wedding Dresses Today

"Now I'm certain that you really do care about me. You're afraid that I'll go bankrupt and end up with nothing." William smiled nonchalantly. "Let's just say I'm sick, unable to do anything about it."

Emelie looked at him and forced a laugh through her gritted teeth. "William, I've asked you everything I needed to. I've asked it all.

"You're the one who won't talk. If you won't say anything now, then don't come to me later with your excuses, saying things were out of your control. Whatever happens to you is your own doing."

William nodded. "There's nothing I have to hide. Things are just like this."

Emelie wasn't going to ask again. She'd given him the chance to explain who stole the battery from her mother's artificial heart, but he didn't say a word.

She'd given him the chance to explain why he didn't stand by his partners Charles, Bryan, and Beathan, and kept helping her instead. However, he didn't say a word about that either.

Hence, even if he was hiding something big, it was no longer her concern. She didn't care.

Emelie picked up her drink and took a swig.

William thought that he saw a glimmer of tears at the corner of her eye, but there was nothing upon a close look. After a few seconds, he asked, "Did you look into your relationship with Wesley?"

"What relationship are you talking about?" Emelie's gaze was cold. "The kind between a couple getting married next month? I was looking at wedding dresses today. Would you like to know which one I picked? It's ten times better than the one I chose when I was with you."

William's eyes narrowed. "You didn't get a DNA test?"

"Why would I offend him like that?" Emelie said.

"What if he's lying to you?" William asked, his voice low.

Emelie responded with a mocking smile. "Well, let's just say I'm willing to be deceived."

She was throwing his own words back at him.

William exhaled slowly, trying to ease the sharp pain in his chest.

He changed the subject for the third time. "Beathan has a higher power backing him."

Emelie responded indifferently, "Is that so? Then let him die at the hands of his own people."

In the days that followed, Ashley spent a lot of time with Beathan. He taught her how to write legal briefs and hold

a mock trial. She essentially went through the process of becoming a trainee lawyer all over again.

On the day of the trial, Beathan accompanied her, sitting in the gallery, giving her encouraging and reassuring looks.

A few seats away, Elias was chewing gum, feeling utterly irritated. Anyone who didn't know better might have thought that they were some kind of deeply devoted couple.

Ashley had been sure that she could handle it this time. However, as soon as she stood in the courtroom, the fear from three years ago surged back, overwhelming her like a tidal wave. She almost immediately fled the courtroom. Thankfully, she had a backup plan, with another lawyer ready to take over the case.

She ran to the restroom, turned on the faucet, and splashed water on her face.

She thought to herself, "Why can't I do it? Why is it still impossible?"

Suddenly, someone placed a hand on her shoulder.

Ashley reacted violently, pushing the person away. "Get lost!"

Elias grabbed her hand. "It's me, Ash!"

That only made her angrier. She wanted him to go away.

Ashley's eyes were bloodshot. Why couldn't she forget that day? Why was the pain still etched into her bones?

She lashed out, shoving Elias away. "Why couldn't you save me that day?! I trusted you so much! Why couldn't you save me?!"

After so many days, she finally let it all out. She was angry at him, and she resented him.
