Chapter 886 The End of Their Road 2

Emelie's words threw William off. He had never thought that way. He never once had those thoughts crossed his mind. He couldn't tell if Emelie genuinely saw him like that or if she was just venting.

"I would never want you to suffer. I didn't give it much thought. I just knew I had to do it for you..." he explained, panic in his voice.

Where could he even begin to explain? What could he say to ease her anger?

William clasped Emelie's cold hands, pressing them against his warm forehead.

"You wanted revenge on your own, and didn't let Wesley help you. Of course, you wouldn't have let me either. That's why I had to act from behind the scenes. That's all I was trying to do," he said in a hoarse voice.

It wasn't about earning moral credit or playing the martyr.

"I'm worse than Charles, Bryan, or even Beathan. I treated you terribly, and I deserved to be the target of your anger," he said.

He deserved every bit of it.

Emelie tried to pull her hands away, but William held on too tightly.

He looked up, meeting her eyes with his. "Angel, I didn't want you to know any of this. I even hoped that you still hate me when I die. Maybe then you'd replace some relief in my death. Maybe even some happiness. And if it made you happy even for a bit, I'd die without regret."

"So?" Emelie felt as if a ping-pong ball was stuck in her throat, and every word came out painfully. "Aren't you so selfless? Why are you here now? You're practically a dying man, and you want me to leave with you? To marry you? What? so I can be a widow?"

William pressed his lips together.

Emelie fell silent too. The cutting words and accusations from her were gone as silence filled the bedroom.

The Denning Residence had the best facilities. They had soundproof walls, and it was perfectly quiet once the door was closed.

Once again, their gaze locked. William's eyes were deep, dark, and fragile. The sadness in his gaze softened his usually sharp single eyelids.

Emelie took a deep breath. As she turned her head away, the ornament in her hair jingled softly.

The next moment, William got up and suddenly grabbed the back of her neck.

His heart was aching with pain, though not as strong as before. He had thought that he could walk away, but now he realized he couldn't.

William had the most meticulous plan and detailed arrangements. However, he couldn't watch his love marry another man. He couldn't watch as Emelie became someone else's wife. He simply couldn't.

He needed her, and he desperately wanted her.

"Yes, I want you to be my widow. I've said it to you a long time ago. Either you stay with me, or you spend the rest of your life alone. You'll never belong to anyone but me!" he rasped, his voice hoarse and determined.

Emelie's breath caught as tears immediately pooled around her eyes. They spilled over, cascading down her cheeks like a broken dam.

"William... You're such a bastard!" she said.

He was self-righteous, presumptuous, and arrogant. And now, he was reaping the consequences.

William leaned in and kissed her tears away. At that moment, Emelie also tasted his.

"I love you," he whispered.

Emelie's sobs became uncontrollable. Her breathing ragged, and the pain in her heart was so overwhelming that she could barely stand it.

William had never seen her cry like that, it was as if she was releasing years of pent-up emotion all at once.

He wiped away her tears as his hands trembled, his heart breaking with every sob. "It's okay, Angel. It's okay. You look so beautiful today. Don't ruin your makeup. Marry me, alright? Just marry me. Don't go with him."
