Chapter 14
It was almost the end of the month. Alicia went to the office and dragged Calla outside.
“Where are we going?” Calla asked, puzzled.
“The list of retained employees has been announced. Let’s go take a look,” Alicia said urgently.
Calla replied, “You’ll definitely get to stay.
Alici
turned around and saw Calla’s dejected expression. So, she comforted her, You’ve always done a good job. Maybe you’ll get to stay as well.”
“It’ll be great if you get to stay. I’ll be taking maternity leave soon anyway.”
The company found out about her out–of–wedlock pregnancy. She was definitely getting laid off. Not to mention, the manager of the HR department was in a relationship with Peggy, who would never allow her to stay.
They arrived at the conference room where the list was shown. A lot of people were already there. The two of them were barely able to squeeze their way inside.
Alicia searched for her name on the list anxiously, while Calla was not at all interested in the list. She raised her head and saw Peggy walking over haughtily.
Peggy smiled smugly. “Calla, even if you don’t get to stay, you’ll definitely be able to replace a better job in a few days with your abilities. I can’t say the same for myself. I have no choice but to work here.”
Calla retorted, “Everyone knows why you get to stay. There’s no need to act so.
conceited here.”
“You…”
Peggy wanted to say something but was cut off by Alicia’s excited scream.
“Ah! Calla, we’re both staying!”
Her words shocked both Calla and Peggy. They quickly looked at the list and started to
look for Calla’s name.
Sure enough, both of them saw Calla’s name after a short while.
Calla thought her eyes were playing tricks on her. She blinked a few times and looked again. Her name was still there.
“Calla, we’re both staying!” Alicia held her arm and almost jumped in joy,
Calla gasped in joy. She didn’t get laid off! She got to keep her job! She grabbed Alicia’s
hand joyfully and exited the conference room.

Both of them went to celebrate the fact that they got to keep their jobs. They completely ignored Peggy, who was still in shock.
Before she could come back to her senses, Jeanne already rushed toward her and yelled, “Peggy Horn!”
Peggy raised her head and met Jeanne’s questioning gaze. Before she could say anything, Jeanne grabbed her hand and dragged her to a balcony with no one around.
“Didn’t you say that Calla would be laid off if I got the evidence of her pregnancy, and I would get to keep my job? I tried so hard to get the evidence and report her. Why is she staying while I’m being laid off?” Jeanne said angrily.
Peggy didn’t know what to say. She turned around and walked to the side. “I’ll ask the HR manager about it.”
“There’s no need for that. He has been let go as well!” Jeanne yelled from behind her.
Peggy turned to look at Jeanne in shock.
Jeanne crossed her arms and complained, “This really backfired on me.”
Peggy frowned as she lowered her head to think. Then, she went up to Jeanne to comfort her, “Don’t worry, Jeanne. I’ll get you back into the company once I establish some connections with someone from the headquarters.”
Jeanne looked at her suspiciously, “Are you serious?”
Was it really so easy to establish connections?
Peggy said confidently, “I was able to get with the HR manager in a few days, wasn’t I? There are even more powerful people from the headquarters. I’ll definitely bring you back when I get with a powerful person.”
Peggy was right. She was able to get an official position after interning for a few months. That had never happened before.
Then, she didn’t get laid off either. It was all because she was able to establish a connection with the HR manager so quickly.
Jeanne also got closer to her because she saw how capable she was. She was out of options at the moment. She could only put her faith in Peggy.
“Alright, I’ll wait. Please don’t disappoint me.” Jeanne’s anger had been appeased.
“We’ll see.” Peggy patted herself on the chest.
