Chapter 30
After noticing that Calla hadn’t touched any of the food yet, Mercer looked at her puzzledly and asked, “Why aren’t you eating?”
“Oh, right. I’ll start eating now.”
Calla quickly nodded and ate a bite of salad.
Nevertheless, the salads did nothing to ease her hunger. She wanted meat! She wasn’t some kind of fairy that survived on sunshine and morning dew!
Despite knowing that the wealthy usually had strict rules of etiquette to follow, Calla couldn’t resist asking, “Do you usually prefer a vegetarian diet?”
Mercer frowned. “Weren’t you the one who said that rich food made you queasy, so you wanted something simple?”
“…” Calla faltered. She’d only made that up to convince her prying colleagues! Why did he take her seriously?
Just then, her phone started ringing. When she took it out and saw Harlan’s name on the screen, she frowned for a moment. Then, she turned to Mercer and said with a smile, “I’ll step out to take a phone call.”
She had only just taken a step when Mercer’s voice rang out behind her. “Who is it? Why can’t I listen in on the conversation?”
Calla looked back at Mercer. He was staring at the food with a neutral expression, but she caught the hint of displeasure in his tone,
She pondered about it briefly. In any case, she and Harlan weren’t engaged in any sort of illicit relationship. If she did take the call outside, it would only make it seem like she had something to hide. In the end, she decided to answer the call without stepping out,
As soon as the call connected, Harlan’s voice came through the phone. “Calla, why aren’t you here yet? I’ve already ordered all your favorite food for you.”
Feeling a tinge of guilt, Calla hurriedly said, “Sorry about this, Harlan, but something came up at the last minute, so I can’t make it. Please have lunch without me.”
“What happened? Do you need my help?” Harlan asked urgently. He was worried that Calla had gotten into some kind of trouble.
Calla noticed that Mercer’s expression was souring. She quickly frowned and rejected Harlan’s offer. “No, not at all. I-”
All of a sudden, a hand reached out to snatch her phone away.

Startled, Calla exclaimed. She watched as Mercer said into the phone, “Mr. Engler, right? My wife, Calla, and I are having lunch. She’s pregnant, so her taste in food is a bit particular right now. You don’t need to worry about treating her to a meal. That’ll be all. Goodbye.”
Calla didn’t know what Harlan said to Mercer. All she knew was that Mercer ended the call after saying a few words before holding her phone out to her.
When she saw the faint smile of smugness on his face, she grew angry and snapped,” What’s the meaning of this, Mercer?”
Mercer’s smile faded. He looked down at her phone and started toying with it as he declared firmly, “Isn’t it obvious? I’m your husband. It’s one thing if he doesn’t know about our relationship. Now that he does, I won’t go easy on him if he continues to pester you.”
“Harlan and I are just friends! What you did was extremely disrespectful!” Calla protested.

Mercer set her phone down in front of her before looking her in the eye and saying clearly, “Calla, you’re my wife now. It’s clearly stated in the third term of our prenuptial agreement that you need to refrain from engaging in overly intimate interactions with the opposite sex!”
“I…” Calla had always had a way with words, but this time, she was rendered speechless. All she could do was glare at the hateful Mercer.
He seemed to have memorized the prenuptial agreement by heart. Still, he was right. She knew she had failed to abide by the third term. Despite that, she wasn’t going to admit it aloud. That was just the way she was
