Chapter 36

Back at her desk after a satisfying meal, Calla was about to burp when Derek appeared in front of her. Startled, she swallowed the burp back.

“Mr. Garland has reviewed your statement and deemed it not sufficiently thorough. He wants you to

rewrite it.” Derek placed the reflection statement in front of her.

What? Rewrite it? Calla’s anger flared up again. She had already written it so carefully and thoughtfully.

How could Mercer still replace fault with it? He was clearly biased against her.

Noticing Calla’s impatience, Derek patted her shoulder. “Rewrite it seriously. Don’t leave a bad impression on Mr. Garland.”

“Fine.” Calla sighed in resignation.

Sitting at her desk, she racked her brain and tried to compose the reflection statement once more.

Meanwhile, Derek made another announcement that had all the employees cheering.

“Everyone, the company is organizing a vacation for all employees at Luna Resort this weekend. All expenses will be covered. Get your luggage ready. We’re leaving Friday afternoon,” he said with a smile.

Upon hearing this, everyone clapped with joy.

Luna Resort, located on the outskirts of Riverford, was renowned for its stunning scenery and luxurious amenities–especially its hot springs. Given its high cost, who wouldn’t want to go on this free trip?

“Mr. Connaught, does ‘all employees‘ include Mr. Garland?” A young female employee asked shyly.

“Yeah, will Mr. Garland be joining us?”

As soon as that question was asked, several young female employees widened their eyes and stared at Derek. After all, this would be a great opportunity for them to have close contact with Mercer.

Seeing their hopeful expressions, Calla shook her head. What was so great about that expressionless man? She felt that these women were really shallow. They were only interested in Mercer’s wealth and

appearance.

“I’m… not sure.” Derek shrugged before retreating to his office.

“Mr. Garland should go, right? Didn’t Mr. Connaught say all employees?”

“Mr. Garland is the boss, not an employee.”

As the speculations continued, someone suddenly suggested placing a bet on whether or not Mercer would join the trip. The wager was 100 dollars.

Most men bet that Mercer wouldn’t go, reasoning that he wouldn’t participate in such a low–level team activity. They deduced that Mercer might already have plans with a companion for the weekend.

That speculation seemed plausible to the ladies as well. As a result, there were very few people betting on Mercer going.

Calla initially didn’t want to participate in such a silly bet, but Alicia pulled her over and whispered, “So is he going or not?”

“How would I know?” Calla retorted.

“You’re his wife. You should know. Hurry up and pick one. I’ll bet on whichever you choose,” Alicia urged.

“I really don’t know.” Calla frowned.

“Then just pick any,” Alicia insisted.

Calla looked at the odds. The amount wagered on Mercer not going was significantly higher than on him going. If she wanted to win, she had to go against the crowd, but she couldn’t guarantee that Mercer would go.

In the end, Calla reluctantly placed her and Alicia’s 200 dollars on the side betting that Mercer would go. After placing the bet, Alicia pulled Calla aside and whispered, “You have to make sure he goes, okay? 100 dollars is enough to cover my living expenses for a month. I really need the money. I can barely afford my mom’s medical bills.”

Calla was taken aback by Alicia’s desperation. “Isn’t it just a game? It’s fine if we lose.”
