Chapter 59

As she stepped inside her house, Calla instinctively called out while changing her shoes, “Mom, I’m back!”

Carol, wearing an apron and holding a spatula, immediately poked her head out of the kitchen. “You hungry? Dinner’s almost ready.”

After washing her hands, Calla started setting the table. Carol placed a serving of fish and chips on the table with a smile.

“Calla, your cousin’s wedding is this Saturday. Let’s go together and congratulate them.”

Hearing this, Calla frowned slightly.

Although she had a good relationship with Maurice and Ethan, the recent reconciliation with Rudy’s family and Maurice’s family was bothersome.

It was said that the

that the reconciliation was due to Maurice’s new daughter–in–law, Eleanor Anderson, coming from an influential family.

Now, Rudy’s family was ingratiating themselves with them, acting as if they never had any conflicts in the first place. They treated Tasha with utmost respect.

Such a big event was sure to attract Rudy’s family, and it could easily turn into a confrontation. Not only. would she get upset, but it would also ruin the celebratory atmosphere of the wedding.

Seeing Calla’s hesitation, Carol quickly tried to persuade her. “A wedding is an important event. Zoey’s busy with her studies, so your uncle and aunt will understand if she doesn’t come. But it wouldn’t be right. if you didn’t go. Don’t you think so?

Although Carol never mentioned it, Calla knew that she couldn’t let go of Rudy after all these years. Carol still wanted to see him but didn’t want to admit it. As a daughter, she didn’t want to point it out either.

As such, Calla nodded and reluctantly agreed. “Okay.”

Carol was overjoyed by Calla’s agreement and quickly served her more fries. “You need to eat more for you and the baby. Look at you–so thin and pale…”

Soon enough, Saturday arrived. Calla accompanied Carol to the hotel where Maurice’s family was holding the wedding reception.

The banquet hall was decorated with white and pastel decorations, as well as delicate fairy lights overhead.

A framed photograph of the bride and groom surrounded by floral arrangements was displayed at the

entrance.

Maurice and Tasha, along with the newlyweds, stood at the entrance to greet guests. The groom wore a black tailored suit, looking dignified. And the bride adored a white silk dress with exquisite makeup.

Carol nudged Calla and whispered, “Look how well–matched Ethan and Eleanor are. Their wedding looks so grand. You and Mercer should have a proper reception like this too.”

Hearing this, Calla felt at a loss for words. Her marriage with Mercer would likely end shortly after she

gave birth. Having a wedding reception only to get divorced? That would be as pointless as pouring water

into a sieve.

Of course, she couldn’t say that to Carol. Instead, Calla nodded and said, “Ethan and Eleanor both have high–paying jobs. We can’t compare to them.”

“It’s still a once–in–a–lifetime event. It should be done properly,” Carol murmured. Then, Calla and Carol approached Maurice and Tasha. After exchanging a few congratulatory words, Calla accompanied Carol into the banquet hall.

As soon as they entered, they ran into Rudy. Not wanting to see him, Calla immediately turned her head

away.

“Rudy, you’ve arrived early.” Carol was delighted to see her ex–husband. Her face lit up with a smile.

Rudy glanced at Carol and then turned his eyes to Calla, full of disdain. “Look at yourself. What gave you the nerve to come here? What will our relatives and friends think?”
