Chapter 91

Mercer stared at Calla for a moment, then suddenly asked, “What did she accuse you of?”

“She accused me of being after your money, of course! Do you even have to ask?” Calla felt that Mercer had suddenly become less intelligent.

“So you’re saying that you’re not interested in my money?” Mercer’s lip curled upward.

“Of course not!” Calla raised her voice by several octaves.

Mercer suddenly asked cheekily, “So you’re just in it for me?”

Calla hesitated for a moment. She randomly picked up the glass of juice next to her to disguise her sudden discomfort. She quickly exclaimed, “Please! Your money is more attractive than you are!”

She had only married him so that her child would have legal recognition. Had he forgotten what he had said to persuade her? Still, why did Calla suddenly feel nervous? She suppressed the strange feeling and tried to keep herself calm.

Mercer was startled. He suddenly said, “After we eat, we’re going back to Riverford.

“So quickly?” Calla was surprised.

She had expected to stay for at least a couple of days. After all, Mercer only went home once every few months.

“What’s the matter? Are you reluctant to leave? Do you want to stay here for a couple more days?” Mercer’s expression was back to its usual cold, impassive state. However, there was a note of amusement in his voice.

“No… I don’t think this place suits me.” Calla looked around at the palace–like building. She felt that it was too elegant and grand. She definitely wouldn’t be able to sleep well here.

Mercer had Jenny tell Simon to get the car ready. After lunch, they drove out of Sedonia’s outskirts.

After about half an hour on the road, the car suddenly turned into a luxurious–looking resort.

Calla asked Mercer, “Aren’t we going back to Riverford?”

He looked at her confused expression and said, “Since we’re here, let’s stay here for a night. We’ll just think of it as a relaxing trip.”

Calla smiled. She thought that this was an excellent idea, turning to admire the view of the resort’s

scenery.

Although the scenery was beautiful, Calla was pregnant and easily tired. She fell asleep the moment they got to the hotel.

It was a bright and sunny afternoon. While Calla slept in the suite’s bedroom, Mercer worked on his laptop in the living room.

Calla was a light sleeper, and although she was half–asleep, she could hear the sound of conversation from outside.

“Mr. Garland, Mr. Harlow heard that you and Mrs. Garland checked into the resort, so he and his wife have

invited the two of you to a dinner party tonight.” It was Simon’s voice.

Mercer hesitated for a moment before replying. “Tell him that Mrs. Garland is having severe morning sickness, and it won’t be convenient for her to meet guests. Thank him on my behalf, and tell them that host them when they come to Riverford.”

“Alright, Mr. Garland.”

Simon continued, “You treat Mrs. Garland so well. Mr. Harlow once offended you in business, but you didn’t hold it against him and came here just so that Mrs. Garland could have a good rest. He’s totally benefiting from this situation.” He laughed.

“Well, it’s all water under the bridge now. I’ve forgotten all about it,” Mercer said casually.

“You may say that, but you hate people like Mr. Harlow who stab others in the back,” Simon said.
