“Let’s eat,” she said after a moment’s pause.

After she had taken a few bites, Calla felt that she had no appetite.

In the bedroom, she leaned against the headboard of the bed and watched television the entire evening. Mercer finally got back in the middle of the night.

He pushed the door open and was startled to see that Calla was still up. She was sitting in her pajamas at the head of the bed. He asked, “It’s so late. Why aren’t you asleep?”

The room was dimly lit by the wall lamps and the glow of the television. Calla saw that he seemed rather tipsy, and his hair was tousled. His shirt collar was slightly open.

Calla knew that he had been drinking, so she got out of bed, poured a glass of water, and handed it to him. “I couldn’t sleep, so I was watching some television.”

Mercer took the glass of water but didn’t drink it. He turned and placed it on the bedside table.

Calla felt that he had grown more distant from her compared to before. He seemed to be distancing himself from her on purpose, though she did wonder if she was being too sensitive.

She smiled and asked, “Have you been very busy with work recently?”

“It’s not too bad,” he answered as he took off his clothes.

Calla took his clothes from him and walked over to the wardrobe. She asked again, “Why have you had so many engagements recently, then?”

“Oh, a friend of mine came back from overseas, so we’ve been having a few gatherings with my old schoolmates,” he answered vaguely.

Calla did not have anything else to say to him because she didn’t know anything about his friends.

“I’m going to have a shower.” Mercer picked up his pajamas and headed straight for the bathroom.

Calla watched the bathroom door close behind him, and she looked rather despondent.

She felt like laughing at herself. After they got back from Sedonia, she thought they had grown close and
