Chapter 1633: Gathering Together
Luther drove towards the warlord's inner courtyard. The sky hadalready darkened, and along the way, neon lights flickered on and off.The light inside the car also intermittently brightened and dimmed.Joyce turned her gaze towards him. He held the steering wheel withone hand while propping his chin with the other. Although his eyes wereon the road ahead, his mind seemed elsewhere. Her intuition told her,he had something on his mind.
A moment later, Luther snapped back to reality, realizing Joyce hadbeen watching him. He felt a bit nervous and forced a smile, “What'swrong?" Seeing her silence, he tried to tease her to divert her attention,"Are you fascinated by me?"
"Uh-huh. You look very good, I'm fascinated," Joyce simply playedalong with his words.
This caught Luther off guard. Joyce's uncharacteristic response couldonly mean something was amiss. Embarrassed, he asked, "What'swrong with you?"
"Nothing." Joyce cast a deep look at him, "Who were you calling in thebathroom earlier?"
"Oh." Luther turned his head guiltily, steering the car while replying, "It'snothing, just some work-related stuff that suddenly came to mind, so Imade a call."
"What work-related stuff exactly?" Joyce asked further.
Luther hesitated; usually, she wouldn't probe. He dodged the question,“Logistics and port trade stuff. Casey called me at the hospital last timeabout the new port construction. Some decisions need my presence, soI made a call to give some instructions about an important link that Isuddenly remembered.”
"Heh, you didn't remember it all afternoon, how important could it be?"Joyce's voice cooled slightly.
At that moment, she was certain, he was lying. She had heard a fewwords at the door, although not very clear, but it should be related topharmaceuticals. She had heard the words “pharmaceuticals”. But hesaid it was about port construction, which was far from the truth.
She glanced at his handsome profile. By now, there were no barriersbetween them. She had given her heart to him, and she could also feelhis deep affection for her. But why should he deceive her, what was hehiding?
"Cough, cough.” Luther coughed lightly, “It's all because my wife is toobeautiful, making me forget all about my work."
Joyce laughed, "Blaming others for your lack of self-discipline?"
She planned to replace out the real reason discreetly. Seeing her laughand not asking further, Luther sighed in relief.
He switched hands on the steering wheel, freeing his right hand to pullhers over onto his lap. "Drive properly,” Joyce warned, frowning.
"I didn't do anything, don't be nervous." He just gently laid his hand ontop of hers. “I have to go back to Khebury next week, and I might beaway for a while," Luther suddenly said.
Joyce frowned slightly; she knew that the last time Casey called Luther,he mentioned a board of trustees and board of directors meeting."How long?" she asked.
Luther shook his head, “I'm not sure, I've been away for too long, andthere's a lot to deal with. I'll try to be quick.”
In fact, his most important task was the arrival of a biochemicalresearch team sent by Donald. He planned to have them collect hisblood and bone marrow for secret research to replace out what poison hewas affected by. If the team came to the Capital, he wouldn't be able tokeep it a secret.
"Alright, I understand,” Joyce nodded lightly.
He didn't mention it, but she knew. He was going back to face a majordecision. The future direction of R&S Group, whether to move theirheadquarters to the Capital, or stay in Khebury and just set up a branchin the Capital.
The board members would certainly have objections to the move, andhe was under significant pressure. Most importantly, the Capital wasthe administrative center, while Khebury was Pascaylia's largestcommercial center. It wasn't suitable for the long-term development ofR&S Group.
She looked out the window, lost in thought. Before long, the car hadentered the warlord's inner courtyard. The brilliant streetlightsilluminated the overlapping shadows of the trees.
It had been a while since she was last here. The roads within thewarlord's courtyard felt strangely unfamiliar to her. Luther drove the carall the way into the inner courtyard and parked it in the yard.
Joyce got out of the car and closed the door behind her. Hearing thecommotion in the yard, Anderson was the first to run out.
"Dad, Mom, you're finally here."
Luther stepped forward and picked up Anderson, "Andres, did you havefun? Are you happy?"
“I'm so happy. Grandma took me bird hunting and taught me so manyskills. I even caught a wild chicken today! It was so cool,” Anderson'svoice was filled with excitement.
"A wild chicken? Andres, you're amazing. Where's the chicken? Showme," Joyce fondly ruffled Anderson's hair.
"Grandma has already made it into a delicious soup. It's in the pot, haha.” Anderson slid down from Luther's body, took Joyce's hand, andwalked towards the house. "Hurry, Mom, you're late, and Grandma'sbeen waiting."
Joyce and Luther walked into the house. Joyce looked apologetically atCecelia, "Mom, I'm sorry we're late."
"It's okay. There's someone who's even later than you," Ceceliaglanced irritably at the clock on the wall.
Luther looked around, "Dad hasn't arrived yet?"
"Hmm." Cecelia's face fell, "Some people don't even call. He alwaystalks about strict discipline.”
"Mom, Dad must be too busy,” Joyce soothed, arm in arm with Cecelia.Suddenly, she heard a car braking outside, "Listen, Dad must be back."Cecelia glanced at the door, and sure enough, Dewey had arriveddriving Ralph's car. Her face brightened, "At least he's not too late.Otherwise, he shouldn't come back for dinner in the future.”
As she spoke, Ralph strode into the house. Dewey saluted, "Ma'am,young master, I'll leave first." After speaking, Dewey quickly left, notwanting to disturb their family gathering.
Luther approached and respectfully greeted, "Dad."
Ralph patted his shoulder, smiling broadly, "Sit."
Cecelia invited everyone to sit at the dining table. Today was the firsttime the family had gathered together for a meal.
Cecelia brought out the dishes one by one from the kitchen. It was afeast, including a stew of cordyceps and wild chicken. She pointed atthe pot, "This is a wild chicken that Andres caught himself. It's beenstewing for over three hours, the soup is very fresh. I added a lot ofprecious herbs, Luther, you need to replenish yourself."
Joyce was taken aback. She immediately misunderstood and blushed. He needs to replenish himself? Did Cecelia know he was exerting toomuch?
At this point, Luther added, "It's just a minor injury, nothing serious.Thank you for your concern.”
Joyce suddenly understood. Cecelia meant he was injured and neededto replenish his nutrition. Oh God, her mind was becoming more andmore impure. It was all his fault.
