Chapter 1661: Who is the Real Target?
Mufron.
Luther and Joyce rushed all the way and arrived at the MandersonHospital where Joyce had given birth.
Upon arriving at the hospital, they discovered that the doctors andnurses who had been responsible for treating Joyce had beentransferred to another hospital.
After inquiring about their current location, Luther and Joyceimmediately headed to the hospital where they were now working.Fortunately, both of them were on duty today.
The doctor clearly remembered Joyce and recognized her immediately. After repeated questioning, the doctor finally revealed the truth toJoyce.
"When you gave birth to the twins, the boy was very healthy, but the girlhad a weak breath and had to rely on instruments and various nutrientsupplies to sustain her life. We determined that the chances of the girlsurviving were not more than 5%, and she wouldn't live past two years. So Mr. Ballard, after much consideration, chose to tell you that the girlwas stillborn,” the doctor explained.
The nurse added, "Mr. Ballard's intention was to spare you furtherdistress, as you were in poor condition at the time. He didn't want youto suffer even more. Long-term pain is worse than short-term pain. If hehad given you hope and then shattered it, it would have been cruel.Especially for you."
The doctor continued, “In fact, Mr. Ballard's judgment was correct. Thegirl held on for over three years but eventually passed away. Mr. Ballardpersonally came to bury the child.”
Joyce took a step back heavily, but luckily Luther held her firmly, trembling as she asked, "So, Iris is really dead?"
The doctor nodded.
Joyce felt her vision darken, and everything became blurred.
She hadn't held much hope to begin with, but seeing the empty grave,a glimmer of hope had risen within her. Now, it had been mercilesslyshattered.
She felt her steps falter, leaning on Luther's embrace, unable to move. She could understand Christian's actions.
To abruptly let her know the truth, when she couldn't bear the shock. Ifafter three years of waiting, she still couldn't save Iris, she would trulycollapse. She would hate even more.
At this moment, Luther remained somewhat calm.
He held Joyce tightly, trying to keep his voice steady. "Doctor, did youpersonally witness Iris's heartbeat stopping?"
The doctor hesitated. "No, because I wasn't in charge at the time. Buteveryone in the hospital said the same thing."
"When were you transferred?" Luther asked.
His intuition told him that something was off. Why were all the doctorsand nurses who had been responsible for Joyce transferred away?"Were you transferred voluntarily?" Luther added.
The doctor shook his head. "I didn't want to come here at all. Themedical facilities are poor, and it's far from my home. I can only driveback once a week, which is very inconvenient. But I had no choice; thehigher-ups wanted me to leave. What could I say?"
The nurse chimed in, "That's right, that's right. I want to be transferredback too. I don't even know who I offended to be sent here."
Luther and Joyce exchanged glances. Something was definitely notright.
It seemed like someone was manipulating things.
"So, you didn't personally witness Iris's death, is that correct?" Joyceasked to confirm.
She looked cautious, afraid of being struck again.
"Well, you could say that. But it should be correct. Afterwards, theintensive care unit for Iris was disbanded. I never saw the child again,”the doctor recalled.
At this moment, Joyce's phone rang.
She took out her phone and saw that it was Darrin calling.
"Answer it. There must be results," Luther became nervous and urgedher.
Joyce's hand trembled as she pressed the answer button.
After connecting the call, she switched to speakerphone, and Darrin'svoice came through.
"Commander, the results are in. The DNA doesn't match. This isn't Iris'sashes."
Upon hearing this, Joyce visibly relaxed.
Luther also breathed a sigh of relief. It wasn't Iris's ashes, just as theysuspected.
This matter became even more bizarre.
Joyce felt her whole body go weak, and her legs lost strength.
Luther held her and said, "Doctor, thank you for your answers. My wifeis pregnant and can't handle too much stress. I'll take her back first. Ifwe have any further questions, we might come to you again. Restassured, once everything is resolved, I will do my best to help with yourwork issues."
The doctor and nurse expressed their gratitude. “Thank you so much. Ifyou have any questions, feel free to come replace us. If I rememberanything, I'll contact you promptly.”
"Very well," Luther nodded. He carried Joyce back to the car they camein.
“I'm fine, let me down. I'm just feeling a bit dizzy," Joyce grabbed hissleeve.
In times like these, she couldn't be strong. She was fragile and neededsomeone to rely on.
“I'll carry you to the car to rest for a bit," Luther carried her to the backseat and gently kissed her forehead.
“I understand how you're feeling right now. Don't think too much. I'lltake you back to rest first. I'll go back to the previous hospital andinquire about it."
"Okay," Joyce nodded.
With so many overturning messages, it was heaven one moment andhell the next. She couldn't bear it, and for the sake of her two childrenin her belly, she shouldn't endure this roller coaster of psychologicaltorment.
She shouldn't hold too much hope. She should wait patiently forLuther's news.
After all, it had been four years, and she shouldn't expect miracles. Now, she just wanted to replace out the truth.
If Iris was really dead, why did Christian put fake ashes in? As thegrave worker said, even if the child was too small and there were noashes, they could have created a symbolic grave mound. It didn't makesense to put the ashes of a stranger in, completely illogical.
Unless even Christian didn't know.
Who was behind it all, even hiding it from Christian?
Where did the fake ashes come from?
Why did they do this?
What exactly did the other party want to conceal?
If everything was fake, and even the doctor didn't witness Iris's deathfirsthand...
Could she dare to hope again?
Joyce rubbed her temples, her headache worsening. Her thoughtswere in a tangle. No, she couldn't keep indulging in these randomthoughts.
Anything that seemed unreasonable would eventually have areasonable explanation.
Luther drove and took Joyce to the hotel where they were staying.Coincidentally, Darrin had also arrived.
Luther handed Joyce over to Darrin, instructing, "She needs rest. Takecare of her and order some food for her. I'll go to the MandersonHospital again. Don't tell anyone about what happened at thegraveyard until we have a result."
"Understood," Darrin nodded.
Joyce tugged at Luther's sleeve. "Call me as soon as you have news."“Yes, of course," Luther leaned down and gently kissed her cheek.Darrin saw it and averted his gaze uncomfortably.
After Luther left, he headed straight to the hospital where Joyce hadgiven birth.
He had a feeling that all the answers would be there.
The doctors being inexplicably transferred, the ashes being switched. What was the real purpose behind it all?
Who was the real target of this whole situation?
