Chapter 1709: Overestimating Themselves
After leaving Christian's mansion, Joyce and Darrin raced back home.As they transitioned from the driveway to the expressway, Darrinsuddenly straightened his body, pressing firmly against the seat, hisexpression tense. He glanced at the rearview mirror from time to timeand checked the side mirrors.
"What's wrong? Is something off?" Joyce asked.
Darrin furrowed his brow. "I feel like ever since we turned at theintersection, there has been a black Range Rover following us. Iactually noticed it on the side road under the expressway earlier, but Ithought it was just my imagination. Now it seems otherwise."
Joyce also noticed the Range Rover; their driving pattern was indeedsuspicious.
“Darrin, you truly are extraordinary. You're much more perceptive thanthe average person. I didn't even notice because the Range Rover wasalways two or three cars behind us, making it hard to spot,” Joycepraised.
Darrin suddenly swerved the steering wheel and switched to the fastlane.
"General, who do you think they might be? Did Christian send someoneto track us? After all, we just left Christian's mansion, and beingfollowed like this raises suspicions,” Darrin asked.
Joyce shook her head. "It's unlikely. Although the Ballard Group hasbeen caught between two factions in the past, Christian has alwaysbeen straightforward. If he had something to ask me, he would do sodirectly and not resort to this method.”
“Then who could it be? You've just returned to Khebury, so it's unlikelyto be your previous enemies," Darrin pondered.
Joyce shook her head again. "I don't know. I didn't have manyacquaintances in Khebury, and I can't imagine having any enemies.""Could they be targeting Mr. Warner?"
Darrin glanced at the rearview mirror. "Not good, they've caught up.They were trying to hide before, but now they're suddenlyunrestrained.”
“It's probably because of the road we're on now. There are very fewcars, and they can't easily blend in, so they decided to revealthemselves," Joyce analyzed.
Darrin nodded. He suddenly sharply turned the wheel and crossed twolanes.
It was because the vehicles behind them had suddenly rushed forward, attempting to ram into the back of their car.
"Heh heh, Darrin, you're quite skilled at driving,” Joyce firmly held ontothe handrail. "I take back what I said before about wanting you to returnto the Capital. It seems that Khebury is more complicated than Iimagined, and I need you by my side.”
Darrin smiled proudly. "General, you finally realized my value. TheMarshal must have sent me here for a reason.”
As he spoke, he turned the steering wheel sharply again, evading theblack Range Rover that had caught up with them, and sped forward.“There are at least four or five cars chasing us."
Joyce counted through the rearview mirror. “They came prepared. Becareful, the last black SUV has been modified and likely carriesfirepower."
“If we engage in a firefight in Khebury, will it cause a social uproar? I'mconcerned about that. The Marshal repeatedly emphasized that I mustkeep a low profile,” Darrin furrowed his brow. Removing the carschasing them from behind was not difficult for him.
However, he worried that if there was too much commotion and it wasdiscovered that military warlords were involved, it would have anegative societal impact on the warlords.
"I understand. The warlords have just gone through a transition period, which has already caused inconvenience to the public. Moreover, withthe new president taking office, any disturbances caused by thewarlords at this time would create trouble for my father," Joyce rolleddown the car window and adjusted the angle to shoot.
“I'm aware of that too. If they don't cross the line, I won't open fire. Justfocus on driving forward and try to take secluded routes to avoidaffecting innocent people. I'll handle it," Joyce narrowed one eye, herexpression serious.
"Alright."
Darrin stepped on the accelerator, turned onto another elevatedexpressway, and the vehicles closely following them were exposed.Joyce counted, and there were five in total. They all followed onto thesame expressway.
“Darrin, get out quickly!" she suddenly shouted.
Darrin instinctively swerved the steering wheel, and the vehicles behindthem extended their windows and fired a shot at their car trunk.Fortunately, Darrin's superb driving skills prevented them from beinghit.
At this moment, the modified SUV with firepower once again fired atthem. Even with Darrin's skills, it was inevitable that one of the tireswould be hit.
The Humvee made a sharp, piercing noise, and the car body violentlyshook a few times.
The intense vibrationcaused by the burst tire felt like experiencing anearthquake.
“It's okay, General. Our car has eight tires, with dual tires on each side. They only managed to burst one, so it won't affect our driving," Darrinquickly explained.
“I'll give them a little lesson."
*Click* A bullet was loaded into the chamber.
Joyce leaned sideways, sticking her head out of the window.
*Bang* A gunshot rang out.
The movements were connected, smooth and seamless!
Darrin saw through the rearview mirror that the modified SUV directlyhad a tire blowout, emitting a piercing sound, and after a 90-degreeturn, it crashed into the guardrail and came to a stop.
The other vehicles, as if provoked, unwillingly stepped on theaccelerator and chased after them.
Joyce furrowed her brow. It seemed that warnings were ineffectiveagainst these extremely vicious individuals. They only understoodprovocation. She had only intended to give them a warning, but sincethey were persistently chasing, she wouldn't be polite.
She nonchalantly *slap* unfastened her seatbelt, turned her wholebody sideways, and leaned out of the window. With one hand, shefirmly grasped the pistol, while the other supported the handle.
Her slender index finger rested on the trigger.
Then, *bang* a gunshot sounded.
Another vehicle's tire burst.
As if getting addicted to shooting, she continued with *bang bangbang*, three consecutive shots.
The tires of all five vehicles were burst one after another, the piercingsounds echoing continuously. In the end, they crashed into each otherin a sorry state, blocking the road and unable to move.
Joyce holstered her gun, shrugged her shoulders, and wore a face ofregret. "I wanted to warn them, but I'm sorry, I got too excited andcouldn't control myself."
Darrin glanced at Joyce, unable to contain his amusement.
Indeed, the General's marksmanship was top-notch, instantly burstingthe tires of five cars. It was a pity for those chasing cars, not knowingwhat kind of person they had provoked, overestimating themselves andlosing face.
"Now, let's go straight home or go to the police station to explain thesituation?" Having shaken off the pursuing vehicles, Darrin askedseriously.
Joyce massaged her temples, feeling a headache coming on. Shedisliked going to the police station to explain these matters. In the past,Karl would handle them for her.
Now she had to face them herself.
“Let's go to the police station. Just to avoid unnecessary speculation,”she sighed, realizing that she would be delayed again instead of gettinghome early.
