Chapter 1762: Irreversible Future

Darrin couldn't believe it either. Reuben appeared carefree andunconcerned, never focused on his work, but who would have thoughthe had such expertise?

Darrin confirmed, "So you mean you can be the anesthesiologist whojoins us in rescuing Alisha?"

Reuben interrupted Darrin, “Yes, me, it's me. I can do it! No need toreplace someone else. No one is more reliable than me!"

Darrin's mouth twitched a few times. "You really can?"

Reuben rolled his eyes. "What's with the doubt? Do I not look like Ican? I graduated first in my class from medical school. And I even workat the Royal Hospital in Rohomes, performing complex surgeries everymonth. Do you think I don't know how to administer anesthesia?"

He patted his chest. "Don't even mention anesthesia; you don't need toreplace a doctor either. Both tasks are on me. From anesthesia to surgery,I can handle it all by myself. That way, you'll have one less person toworry about, and the target is narrowed down."

Joyce looked deeply into Reuben's eyes and said, "That's even better.Thank you."

Reuben glared at Darrin. "You see, Joyce trusts me. Don't worry, I haveexperience. No matter how difficult the surgery, I can handle it."

Darrin nodded. "If you lend a hand, I believe everything will gosmoothly."

In front of Joyce, Reuben took out another satellite communicationphone and dialed a number within Rohomes. He spoke to his trustedsubordinate, giving some brief instructions. He requested that hissubordinate obtain the new anesthesia and immediately deliver it toKhebury. He also asked for his usual set of surgical instruments to besent over.

His words were professional, completely devoid of his usual carefreedemeanor. Reuben, when serious, seemed like a different person, garnering admiration from others.

After Reuben finished arranging everything, Joyce finally felt the realityof the situation. The first difficulty had been successfully resolved, andshe felt a slight relief.

They would tackle the next challenges one by one.

After Reuben hung up the phone, Joyce formally addressed him,"Reuben, today's matter is purely personal and unrelated to ourprevious cooperation. Consider it a great personal favor owed to you."Reuben heard Joyce address him as "Reuben" and felt that they hadgrown closer. But when he heard her mention owing him a favor, itclearly drew a line.

His expression fell. "How can the matter of a child be considered afavor? You're being too distant in your words, and I'm starting to getupset.”

Joyce smiled. "I can't be too thick-skinned, can 1? Let's separatedifferent matters."

She suddenly turned serious. "Actually, I know that you deliberately gotclose to me. Besides knowing about my warlord identity and wanting tocooperate with me in eliminating OGW, you must have other motives. But right now, you don't want to say it out loud. Otherwise, you wouldn'thave appeared in Khebury out of nowhere. Am I right?"

Reuben was taken aback. Joyce was right; he did come to Kheburywith other motives.

He opened his mouth but ended up saying, "No matter what mymotives are, I will never harm you."

“If you have any requests, just say it. As long as it's within my power, I'lldo everything I can to fulfill it," Joyce promised.

Reuben furrowed his brow, and naturally, his purpose was to obtain thereverse pulse electromagnetic technology. He knew that it was likelyrelated to Joyce in some way. However, he didn't want to say it now. Hegenuinely wanted to save Alisha, and it wasn't meant as a bargainingchip.

"How about this? Let's agree that after we rescue Alisha, you can makea wish anytime you want. I'll do my best to fulfill it. How does thatsound?" Joyce noticed that Reuben seemed a bit unhappy and took astep back, putting the promise into the future.

Reuben nodded. "Alright, then maybe I'll borrow something from youwhen the time comes. It may burden you, but I promise I'll handle thesituation well."

Joyce nodded. Although she didn't know what Reuben was referring to,a bond had formed between them, and she wouldn't refuse.

"Now that it's settled, it's too late. I'll leave now,” Joyce stood up, readyto leave.

Darrin made way for her.

Reuben had just stood up as well.

Joyce smiled. "No need to see me off. Let's keep in touch. Goodbye."With that, she walked away from the Situ Manor, and Darrin followedclosely behind.

Reuben watched Joyceleave, her slender figure filled withdetermination. She disappeared into the darkness, and soon Darrindrove the car away.

Reuben couldn't snap out of it for a long time. Sleep had longabandoned him, and his mind was filled with thoughts of her. Helowered his head and chuckled self-deprecatingly.

No one would believe it if he said it out loud. He had studied medicinefor so many years, yet his own mother was confined to a psychiatrichospital. He didn't even have the right to visit her. That's the inhumanityof the Rohomes royals. To bring about change, he had to overthrowthem.

He narrowed his eyes, protecting his loved ones was everyone'sinstinct. So he understood Joyce's current state of mind.

He hoped that everything would go smoothly.

On the other side, Joyce and Darrin left together.

As Darrin drove, he asked, "Sir, Reuben has a medical background, buthis mother is kept in a psychiatric hospital. It's really strange. I've beensuspicious that there's more to it. Reuben's mother, is it possible thatsomeone deliberately targeted her? Forcing her into the psychiatrichospital? I didn't see Grizela today, and last time, she inadvertentlyhinted at it. I don't think I misheard."

“It's very possible. Moreover, it's likely that Reuben studied medicine forthe sake of his mother. I feel he has a strong dependence on hismaternal family. To some extent, he doesn't want to acknowledge hisRohomes identity. Don't you think so?"

“Yeah, I feel the same way." Darrin continued to accelerate, returning tothe Warner residence as quickly as possible.

When they arrived, it was already three in the morning.

As they parked the car, Darrin still had some concerns. He advised,"Sir, no matter what, the fact that we've resolved the anesthesiologistand doctor issues simultaneously is great news. Rest well and takecare of yourself."

"Okay." Joyce got out of the car. "Don't worry, I won't easily fall down. I'lhold on until the end for their sake."

With that, she walked into the house, went upstairs to Anderson's room, and gave him a kiss. Then she went back to her own room, exhausted, and lay down on the bed. Her body was exhausted, but her mind wasfilled with thoughts of Alisha and Luther. Every step she took from nowon had to be carefully considered, or else she would face anirreversible future.
