Chapter 39 Why Are You Dodging Me
Chapter 39 Why Are You Dodging Me
After leaving the Cornell Residence, Stella was sent by the police to a nearby hospital. She lay in bed alone with a doctor standing next to her in the examination room as nobody else was allowed inside. After palpating Stella's tummy and listening to the fetus's heartbeat using the stethoscope, the doctor said, "There's nothing serious. Everything is normal, so you just have to wait until your due date." "Doctor." Stella straightened her clothes and slowly sat up with her hand on her waist. "If I don't want this baby any longer, may I ask if it's possible to induce labor?"
"Huh?" The doctor was startled for a moment before she shook her head. "You can't do that. There's nothing wrong with your pregnancy, so we can't induce you. Certain conditions must be met to induce labor, and it can't be done unless the baby has any birth defects."
Stella couldn't resign herself to this, though. "Can't I induce labor even if I no longer want this baby?"
The doctor frowned while looking at Stella with scrutiny. Still, she shook her head in the end. "No, you can't. The regulations are strict nowadays, so you must come up with a reason if you want to induce labor. Otherwise, our hospital can't perform such an operation on you."
Stella's face instantly darkened at the doctor's words. This baby was what she relied on to be together with Norman. Although Norman was from a poor family, he was a capable man and a director with a pretty sizable annual income. Besides, she did love him a little, so she felt that such a life was perfect. However, things had now changed dramatically in just one to two months. Not only did Norman lose his job as a director, he was now locked up in jail.
Both Stella and Elizabeth had gone to the police station the day before to visit Norman and ask about the case after the police called. Those in the police station said that Norman's case was difficult to handle, for there were orders from above that he had to be punished severely. Since he would be punished severely, no one knew how many years he would serve in jail. She couldn't bear a child for such a convict, could she?
Furthermore, it was apparent from what Diane said that Norman wanted to run away alone with the money. What an *sshole! I have been together with him for so many years, yet I haven't enjoyed much of a comfortable life. What's more, he was going to run away, but he planned on doing so without even thinking of me. Upon thinking about this, she was even more unwilling to bear a child for such an *sshole. After leaving the consultation room, Stella supported her waist with her hand and followed the police officers to the police station to have her testimony recorded. She kept thinking as she walked. Unexpectedly her thoughts were eventually fixed on Christopher's extraordinarily handsome face.
Diane, that woman, is really lucky to have actually hooked up with Christopher. Even sloppy seconds like her can be together with Christopher and become Mrs. Wayne, so why should I make things difficult for myself by insisting on bearing Norman's child? No, I mustn't keep this baby. It won't be long before this baby is born, so I must replace a way to get rid of this baby as soon as possible. Regular hospitals like this can't perform induced labor, but this shouldn't be a problem for those smaller private clinics, she thought to herself while taking a look at the sign of the hospital behind her.
While Stella was being taken to the police station, Diane had arrived home with Christopher. Christopher didn't speak much along the way, whereas Diane felt that the dull pain in her waist seemed to have worsened as she leaned back in her seat for a while.
After changing her posture, she put out her hand and massaged her waist. Such movements were hardly noticeable in the first place, but she didn't expect that she would startle Christopher, who was originally looking ahead of him. He instantly looked back and stared at her for a while before the displeasure immediately showed on his face. "Didn't I tell you to rest well at home? Why didn't you listen to me?" Diane stopped massaging her waist for a moment and looked at Christopher. "Something happened to my family; Elizabeth went to my family's house and brought some gasoline with her, so I couldn't just leave my parents alone."
"Are you an idiot?" Christopher's sudden remark baffled the simpleminded Diane. Then, he leaned toward her with the tip of his nose almost touching hers. "Don't you know how to make a phone call at the very least? Do you need someone to teach you how to do that?"
What does he mean? Does he mean that I should call him when something happens? How could I have the nerve to call and trouble him? "You're too busy. Besides, it's not something serious." She leaned backward and pressed herself directly against the car door as the breaths Christopher exhaled made her nervous.
"You wouldn't call it something serious until the house goes up in flames and the people inside are burned to ashes, am I correct?" Christopher's eyes narrowed slightly as the glint in them became increasingly unfriendly. As he looked at the fluttering eyelashes of the lady before his eyes, he felt an urge to seize hold of her and give her a spanking. "Come over here." With a soft snort, he wrapped his arm around Diane's waist and pulled her into his arms. However, instead of spanking her bottom, he placed his large hand on her waist and asked, "Does it hurt here?"
The warmth of his palm spread into Diane's body, creating a strange feeling that ran up and down through her body. Diane did not dare to move as she froze all over and sat upright like a child who had made a mistake.
When he sensed how her body had tensed up, Christopher frowned slightly and side-eyed her frostily. "I'm asking you if it hurts here."
"Uh... Yes. Yes... Uh, no, it doesn't hurt anymore," Diane replied incoherently. As she spoke, she struggled to move to the side, for she didn't want to be so close to Christopher.
Unexpectedly, such a struggle displeased Christopher. He held her even more tightly with his large hand, and he lowered his head with a look of slight displeasure in his eyes. "Why are you so nervous? Do you have a guilty conscience?"
Diane's heart jumped as she felt Christopher's breath on her face. "Why should I be nervous?"
"In that case, why are you dodging me?" Christopher asked. Diane had a feeling of helplessness as she was at her wits' end. It's too stuffy. Hasn't he wound down the car windows? I'm suffocating right here, she thought to herself while glaring at the car window that was partially wound down. After a long time, she forced out a reply in a very unnatural manner and said, "I'm not dodging you. I just... I just don't feel like troubling you, Mr. Wayne. I'm pretty fine, and there's no problem."
Christopher didn't speak at first. After being silent for a few seconds, he suddenly pinched Diane's waist with his finger; it instantly triggered an electric current that almost made her jump. As he pressed his warm lips to her earlobe simultaneously, he lowered his voice and replied, "You became pregnant and suffered a miscarriage for me, so I should fulfill my obligation to look after you. Don't think too much about it."
Don't think too much about it; he's telling me not to think too much about it. Diane went red in the face at once, for she felt very embarrassed as if his words had hit a nerve in her. Everyone else must be unaware that the greatest thing about Christopher isn't his superior intelligence, but his capability of making caustic remarks. He has such a caustic tongue that one would want the ground to open and swallow them up, she lamented inwardly. She struggled a little, but after she sensed his hand's persistence, she gave up struggling and let him massage her waist gently.
She didn't know whether it was because she was too exhausted or because she felt too comfortable thanks to the hand that was massaging her waist, but Diane felt dizzy and sleepy not long after the car started driving. As the sleepiness overtook her, she soon rested her head on Christopher's shoulder. Christopher's eyes were deep and dark as he glanced sideways at the sleeping woman who was leaning her head against his shoulder.
Soon, the car reached home while Diane was asleep. Since she was sound asleep, Christopher didn't wake her up. He lifted her out of the car directly, but just as he put her down on the bed, she suddenly woke up again.
She hadn't yet left Christopher's arms at this moment, so she blushed again upon seeing the state she was in. Fortunately, Christopher merely put her down without mocking her. When she saw that he was about to leave, she recalled something and hastily spoke.
