Chapter 40 You and Mr. Wayne Are a Good Match
Chapter 40 You and Mr. Wayne Are a Good Match
Diane was sitting in bed. "I'd like to talk to you about Emilia. You..."
Christopher, who had taken a few steps toward the door, looked back at her when he heard Diane's words. "Do you not want me to arrange a job for her?"
"No... It's just that this is too troublesome. Just forget it and ignore her if it's not easy to give her a job." Diane frowned slightly as she felt somewhat embarrassed. "I know that Evergreen Incorporated has strict requirements for its employees; even a company clerk must graduate from a prestigious university. To be honest, I applied for a job at Evergreen Incorporated when I first graduated from college, but unfortunately, I wasn't hired. Emilia isn't some top student either; she graduated from an average university with average academic results, so it's impossible for her to work at Evergreen Incorporated." She spoke on her own, but the furrows in Christopher's brow deepened at her words. "Are you saying that you think I don't have this bit of right as the company's president?"
"No, no-that's not what I meant, of course." When she realized that Christopher had misunderstood what she meant, Diane immediately shook her head. "I'm just worried that you'll be violating the company's rules and regulations by giving her special privileges."
Christopher looked at the woman before his eyes, who kept mumbling with a troubled expression, as if he was taking pity on an idiot. After a long pause, he even turned around and sat down again on the side of Diane's bed. "What's inside your head?" He raised his hand and poked her head with his slender finger. "Your recently graduated younger sister knows to exploit exploitable connections to her advantage, ye you're as stupid as an idiot."
Diane furrowed her brows as her head tilted to the side when Christopher poked it. She couldn't help but mutter, "I'm just worried that your employees will make comments about you."
Christopher was stunned for a moment. Is she worried that I'll be put in a tight spot? Arranging for a petty clerk to work at my company won't put me in a tight spot, right? Why is this little girl saying that this is for my own good, though?
As he withdrew his hand and stared at Diane, he suddenly found this woman's dumb demeanor adorable-her eyes were pure despite her ruffled hair and the sleepiness on her face. "You worry too much." His voice softened, but the look in his eyes was still as chilly as usual with a hint of contempt. "Such a little thing won't be much of a big deal, so don't worry about that. Just let her report to the company since she's unlike you." Emilia isn't as kind as you are. If I don't help Emilia solve her job-related problem, she'll certainly pester Diane, he thought to himself.
Christopher said nothing else, and neither did Diane. She pondered over the words 'She's unlike you' that he said at the end of his speech, but unfortunately, she couldn't figure out what the words meant even after thinking for a long time. Instead, the more she thought about it, the sleepier she became, so she simply lay down in bed and took an afternoon nap.
Since Christopher had helped her to ask for leave, Diane didn't go to her company for a long time. Throughout the next few days, Christopher even stayed at home most of the time. Diane wondered why he would have so much free time on his hands as the president of a large company, but he ignored her when she asked him so without thinking. In the end, she could only stop asking the question.
Meanwhile, Elizabeth had been taken into custody that day. Diane had no idea what had become of Stella, but she couldn't care less about that.
The next day, Diane received a call from Emilia; her sister told her that she finished reporting for duty and had begun working in the Secretarial Department. However, Emilia actually majored in business management. In Diane's opinion, Emilia would've been better off working at the Administration Department instead of the Secretarial Department, for the former would give her more room for improvement. However, Emilia insisted on working at the Secretarial Department, so Diane could only let her be.
Emilia didn't call Diane again over the next few days. Christopher told her that Emilia had begun working, but Diane couldn't stop feeling uneasy. After all, she knew her younger sister better than anyone else did. Emilia had been unruly since childhood, and she never studied hard at school, so she probably had a poor grasp of any professional knowledge.
Diane was both worried and mistrustful of Emilia. Therefore, she went to Evergreen Incorporated on this day since she was bored of staying at home all day.
This was her first time going back to Evergreen Incorporated since her failed job interview many years ago, and she just wanted to see how Emilia was doing at the company. Diane was worried that her sister wouldn't do a good job and cause Christopher trouble, so she decided to check on Emilia herself to put her mind at rest.
On her way to the company, she passed by a famous dessert shop. She made a turn to the shop and bought some afternoon snacks.
It wasn't easy to enter Evergreen Incorporated's building since it was under strict management. Diane could only check on Emilia's performance at work through Christopher, so she asked to meet him when she went to the front desk.
The front desk receptionist didn't know Diane, but they were quite polite. After Diane told them her name, they called the president's office. Diane had no idea what was spoken over the phone, but she was soon allowed to meet Christopher. Furthermore, the front desk receptionist even pointed the way to the president's office.
Soon enough, the elevator rose to the top floor. After exiting the elevator, Diane had to walk past a staff lounge to reach Christopher's office.
In addition to Christopher's office, this floor consisted of the president's office, the Secretarial Department's office, and the offices of several important top executives. Since many employees worked on this floor, the staff lounge occupied a large area.
Diane didn't want to look inside at first when she walked past the lounge, but she was stopped by the words she heard as she walked past.
"How do you even know this, Miss Hayworth? You and Mr. Wayne must have known each other before, right? Even I'm unaware of his coffee-drinking habit. I simply made coffee for him according to my preferences every time, and he never said anything."
"He doesn't like to speak much, so he'll typically make do with what's available most of the time; it's only normal that you're unaware of these things."
Two ladies were speaking at the moment. The second woman's voice was gentle and sweet, but it contained a hint of assertiveness that matched the way she was addressed.
Miss Hayworth... Instantly, the contact named 'Q' on Christopher's cell phone crossed Diane's mind. She didn't know why her mind reacted instantly, but she had a vague feeling that the person named Miss Hayworth inside the lounge was likely Q. Even Diane herself never noticed Christopher's coffee-drinking habit, so why would this woman know that? Besides, judging by the tone of the woman's voice, she seemed to have known him for a long time.
Naturally, Diane couldn't help but stop in her tracks and stand at the door.
"Miss Hayworth." The first woman spoke again in a tone of flattery and familiarity. "Since you and Mr. Wayne are so close, your relationship with him must be special, right?"
"No, that's not the case." Queenie, who had just spoken in a tone that the elite class usually had, suddenly softened her voice. Her expression wasn't visible, but this reply was said with such a cadence that anyone could hear the shyness in her voice. "Don't talk nonsense. There's nothing between Christopher and me."
"How could you say there's nothing between you and Mr. Wayne when you're calling him by his first name? What are you embarrassed about, Miss Hayworth? We discussed it in private, and we think that you and Mr. Wayne are a good match."
At this point in the conversation, the sounds of dishes being washed and water running from the tap could be heard inside. Then, as water could be heard running in the background, Queenie rebuked, "That's enough what you all are saying is getting more and more ridiculous. The way I see it, Christopher is too kind to you all, so much so that you all have the nerve to discuss his personal life in private." "You're wrong for saying that, Miss Hayworth. Please don't be mad at us since we're telling the truth, but we like discussing rumors about Mr. Wayne privately more than anything else since he is such an outstanding boss. It can't be helped since many ladies in the company fancy him; I would've also fallen for him if it weren't for the fact that I'm already married. People like us can only fantasize about him, of course. We can't compare with you, Miss Hayworth-everyone says that you're the only person in the company who is worthy of Mr. Wayne."
The woman's words were so full of flattery and envy that Diane stood frozen by the door. Just then, a hand suddenly patted her on the shoulder. As it startled her, she looked back sharply.
