After divorce, Ex-wife Revealed Identities -
Chapter 892
Chapter 892
Sylvia looked at the medical records detailing Giancarlo's condition and furrowed her brow slightly.
Her expression was serious as she spoke, "The tumor is located in the brainstem, which makes it the most risky area to operate on. Mr. Morales' tumor is particularly deep, making the surgery even more difficult. The brainstem is a vital part of the human body that controls important functions such as breathing, heartbeat and circulation. If we're not careful during surgery, there's a risk that his breathing or heartbeat could stop."
"Dr. Sylvia," said the head of neurosurgery with concern in his eyes, "this used to be considered a surgical no-go zone..."
There have been successful cases in recent years but they are very rare and all performed by foreign experts...
"It's okay," Sylvia replied as she looked up at him calmly. "Both Mr. Morales and Ms. Hipps have made significant contributions to society and I cannot simply ignore their illness."
"But Dr. Sylvia," he continued with tears welling up in his eyes, "the success rate for this type of surgery is really low and even if it succeeds there can be severe after-effects... the risks are too great."
Just then Jasmine walked into the room; she glanced at both doctors before turning her attention towards Sylvia.
"My family members and my husband himself have agreed that you will perform this operation personally," Jasmine said firmly.
"If you cannot do it, then we don't know who else can save him." She sighed heavily before continuing. "We've searched for doctors in Lleilaga, or thought about going to Aettosa but... although we are Aettosa people ourselves I still don't know why I trust Dr. Sylvia so much."
Jasmine took a step forward towards Sylvia before grasping her hand tightly.
"Dr. Sylvia, my husband trusts you completely; please take care of him during this operation."
"Don't worry, Ms. Hipps," replied Sylvia reassuringly while patting Jasmine's hand gently. "I promise you that there won't be any risks involved during this procedure." She turned towards head neurosurgeon. "Notify all departmental physicians; consultation will take place at 2 pm today."
"Yes, Doctor," he responded quickly before hurrying off to make arrangements.
Sylvia's words held great authority within Lilypad General Hospital.
As he walked away from them down hospital corridors, he couldn't help but wonder who these elderly couple were exactly? What kind of background did they come from? They must belong to some wealthy family perhaps?
As he was thinking this, he ran into a group of young nurses who were huddled around their phones. "Oh my god! They're really great professors and scientists," one exclaimed.
"Yeah, I didn't expect them to be that amazing."
"It's such a shame they have this illness. God must not be watching. I wonder if Dr. Sylvia can do anything about it."
The director walked over curiously. "What scientists?"
"Director, you don't know? The new patient Giancarlo and his wife are both incredible!" A nurse held up her phone for the director to see. "They may not be from H Rovirsa, but they're still impressive in Aettosa."
The director looked at the famous couple and their past achievements.
No wonder Dr. Sylvia said they've made significant contributions to society...
The director had felt like he recognized the couple's names before but hadn't been able to place them because he didn't usually pay attention to scientific matters.
Now it all made sense.
"Alright, notify everyone that there will be a consultation this afternoon," the director ordered before turning and leaving again.
After hearing Sylvia's decision, Jasmine returned to the hospital room where Giancarlo was sleeping peacefully in bed. He looked very calm while sleeping; perhaps it was due to his age or his illness causing him breathing difficulties.
Jasmine slowly sat down next to him on the bed and reached out as if she wanted to tuck him in tighter with blankets but hesitated before ultimately putting her hand back down for fear of waking him up. She just sat there quietly beside Giancarlo for what seemed like an eternity until Sylvia entered the room with sunlight streaming through the window casting a golden glow on Jasmine's hair which had turned white over time making her look serene yet radiant at once.
Sylvia remembered seeing them as a couple for the first time at an H Rovirsa restaurant where they exuded confidence and grace just like now; clearly showing how much love they shared between each other even after all these years together as husband and wife
"Are you hungry? There is a cafeteria here..." Sylvia began speaking only for Jasmine gently interrupting her saying, "I'll wait until he wakes up so we can eat together." She smiled warmly at Sylvia, asking, "Has consultation ended?"
Sylvia nodded while placing both hands inside her lab coat pockets showcasing her long neck beautifully. "The surgery is scheduled for tomorrow morning."
"That's good, we can't delay any longer," Jasmine coughed softly and then looked up again. "He was my senior in college, we met during a science competition. We were always competitors, constantly trying to one-up each other, you know how it is. We were young back then and neither of us wanted to lose."
"I never thought that he would confess his feelings for me later on," Jasmine laughed. "Why am I telling you all this?"
"Do you and your husband have any children?" Sylvia asked skeptically.
Jasmine's face stiffened for a moment before she finally spoke again after a long pause. "Years ago, my brother's child went missing and we both felt responsible for it... so we never had children of our own as a way to make up for what happened with my niece. We don't deserve to have children."
Sylvia was shocked by the revelation; in that era having no children was almost unheard of as it was considered the most basic duty of forming a family.
"Don't think like that," Sylvia comforted her quietly. "There are many unknown things in this world, not everything is necessarily your responsibility."
This couple seemed kind-hearted with their own story to tell; especially since Jasmine shared the same last name as Hipps family - there had been rumors about their daughter going missing.
But Sylvia didn't have an interest in prying into other people's privacy nor did she want to investigate Hipps family since she had good relations with the Hipps family.
"For years because of our guilt, we haven't dared contact our family or use our real names while doing research abroad," Jasmine continued speaking softly while looking down at her hands clasped tightly together on her lap. "We've achieved so much success and won numerous awards but even now... despite donating all the prize money under our family name towards charity work... My husband and I still fee pain and guilt inside."
"Whenever I think about that child, my heart just hurts so much."
Jasmine covered her chest with one hand while tears welled up in her eyes. Perhaps it was because she found comfort talking with someone who understood or maybe Giancarlo's illness pushed her over the edge but either way she felt like she was going insane.
"Even our family has been contacting us, asking us to come back, but how can we face them?" Jasmine closed her eyes in sadness, tears streaming down her cheeks. "It's been so many years now and my husband and I have some connections too. We've asked people all over the world to look for that child, but there's no news of her."
"If she's still alive, she must be a prodigy surpassing all the children in the Hipps family."
"But... no. So many years have passed and there hasn't been any genius who matches her. Even though we heard about you and how great you are, you're too young to be her."
"Honey..." Giancarlo suddenly spoke up, startling Jasmine out of her thoughts as if waking from a dream. She quickly wiped away her tears.
Looking at Sylvia with an embarrassed expression on their faces, Jasmine said apologetically. "I'm sorry Dr. Sylvia; I shouldn't have told you all this."
Sylvia smiled as she walked over to Jasmine and helped wipe away her tears. "At your age I should call you grandma; why be so polite? Sometimes it helps to talk to someone else about your feelings." "You're right," Jasmine said with relief while berating herself for losing control earlier.
Giancarlo didn't blame his wife either; instead he sat up from his bed saying. "Dr. Sylvia... my illness..."
"I just talked with Ms. Hipps earlier today; your surgery is scheduled for the day after tomorrow. Don't worry, Mr. Morales; I won't let anything unexpected happen," Sylvia reassured him before giving some instructions then comforting Jasmine before leaving to arrange for a nurse.
"I really lost control earlier... I don't know why but seeing her made me feel very familiar," Jasmine felt embarrassed thinking about how emotional she had gotten in front of someone younger than herself. "At least now you know what embarrassment feels like," Giancarlo chuckled indulgently like he was talking to a little girl again. "It's good that you talked about it though instead of keeping it bottled up inside." Sylvia was right - everyone needs an outlet for their emotions sometimes or they'll build up until they explode.
The couple chatted some more after dinner before going off separately.
Jasmine washed dishes while Giancarlo drifted off into sleep again, which worried Jasmine because he seemed more tired lately than usual.
She quietly approached him and checked his breathing. Finding that he was still alive, she sat down.
Meanwhile, Sylvia had been thinking for a while and finally sent a message to Clare on Facebook all the way in Aettosa. "Is your aunt a scientist?" After sending the message, Clare immediately replied, "Yes, her name is Jasmine."
The night was dark as ink with stars twinkling in the sky. After a busy day, Sylvia dragged her tired body back home only to replace the living room brightly lit.
A man with an ominous aura sat on the sofa and upon hearing her enter, he glared at her coldly with resentment evident in his voice. "You know how to come back?" His tone was full of bitterness... naked bitterness...
Sylvia was taken aback but couldn't help but laugh. "What are you doing?"
